Classic Film : Enjoyable musical classic

Enjoyable musical classic

The Jolson Story (1946) even though, as it says in the summary, it's 'idealized'. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0038661/?ref_=nv_sr_1

Re: Enjoyable musical classic

Barbara Hale, who co-starred in the sequel, JOLSEN SINGS AGAIN, recently passed away at age 94.

Re: Enjoyable musical classic

Jolson himself had full control of this biopic, which is why it's a cinematic self-portrait. He even recorded all the songs for Larry Parks to lip-synch.

Most of my friends who have inferiority complexes are absolutely right.

Re: Enjoyable musical classic

The Jolson Story was a movie I would never miss when I was growing up. No matter how late it was scheduled on a school night, I'd be there. I it a big impact on my ideas about show business and music.

Re: Enjoyable musical classic

I have mixed feelings about this movie. On the one hand, I'm glad the real Jolson got to sing once more before he died, but I usually hate dubbing in musicals. There are so many Broadway musical actors who are good singers and actors who never get the chance play leads in film musicals because they're not considered 'box office'.

But, if you must dub, you can't do better than the original.
