IMDB shutting down boards at Feb. 20

Truly puzzling decision :/ This site is shaped by users, to take away message boards is just awful. But if you guys are looking for a place to talk about the show, check out the link in signature.

Just stupid and for no reason

Re: IMDB shutting down boards at Feb. 20

Yeah, ive said so too in other threads, it puzzles me too and its a real pity.

I just wanted to add though, i appreciate the link to the WW forum, but what i liked most about IMDb is that it functioned as a hub to reach almost every movie and show without joining separate fan-based communities or forums, because im rarely really a fan of something, i just like discussing things, asking questions or helping out etc.

I skip reading the bottom line, because it is usually some lame signature.

I don't know it's not really that puzzling. It is a pure $$ decision.

The cost in time and effort to properly moderate the forums and create a troll free movie discussion utopia far outweighs any of their estimates of the increase in revenue it would bring.

And they've also calculated that if all the most regular users of the message boards never use the site again after they close down, it will still cost them less than a full moderation and clean up effort.

Doing nothing and letting everyone continue having their fun isn't an option either as they've decided that being seen as a haven for trolling and abuse could cost them more potential users than the number they will lose by axing it.

Disappointing yes, but it was fun while it lasted.

Re: IMDB shutting down boards at Feb. 20

Well yeah i get that.
Its not that puzzling, but its how i felt about it.
Of course pretty much the only motive is money, otherwise it wouldnt cut down on interaction.

IMDb does have a bad rep when it comes to trolling, but so does YouTube and Facebook, i just think its a bit extreme to close the boards.
And signing a petition isnt really my thing either, they decided to remove them, keeping them would not be what they want. Im sure they contemplated the migration of users, its what they want.

I think its a bad move, but i guess their economic models say otherwise.

I skip reading the bottom line, because it is usually some lame signature.

Re: IMDB shutting down boards at Feb. 20

It's not money to run the boards, it's the fear of Trump and the alt right. Hollywood and IMDB/Amazon need each other, they hate the alt right. If you complain here about the lack of quality in a film or show, and it makes people not buy into it, Amazon losses money. It's that simple, they don't want a voice of dissension hurting their bottom line. All movies and shows they rent are worth paying for and watching, even if they suck, in their humble opinion.

I've noticed for awhile now, that on any given board, half the posts say what's wrong with a show and the other half loves the show, that has to be disturbing to the powers that be.
