it makes me sad, I'm going miss you and DiNaslo's comments.
Re: Message boards being eliminated.
"One" bad apple definitely spoiled the whole bunch for the rest of us.
Maybe we should compile some kind of network so we long time folks can stay in touch.
What that would be I don't know.

Re: Message boards being eliminated.
Any FB savvy person here who can create a FB private/invitation only page for those of us who've posted here for all these years?
It's Facebook, yes, but it would be a closed site.
Just a thought.

I had been on another board for years which shut down..we formed a private FB page and it has worked well and we have all been able to keep in touch.I can see if I can figure it out!

Re: Message boards being eliminated.
I host/run a couple of websites for voluntary groups.
I believe my hosting package would allow me to set up a message board (I need to check, but I think I can install message board software and not rely on any of the commercial sites). It could be as private or as public as we wanted and everyone here could sign up with their familiar usernames.
OK everyone would need to create new accounts to use it, rather than an existing facebook account, but it would mean that those who hate facebook wouldn't have to deal with it and - personally - I think fb groups are rubbish for message board type interaction with multiple threads and especially rubbish for finding things again.
Would you guys like me to look into this and see if it is possible?
You have a Life?
Well make the most of it; you never know when it might be gone.

For years we have all been anonymous, maybe we will become less so as a result of IMDB's announcement. If anyone wants to know my email address, I will consider your request.
I guess we just have a week to figure this out.
PM me this week if you want to keep track of me. Otherwise, peace goes with you.
Much love to everyone,
Dave

I can do it. It tells me I need one friend to make the group, so I'll need to add one of you to it in order for it to work. PM me if interested.
Re: Message boards being eliminated.
I've been thinking about it and since I keep FB just for family stuff; I've changed my mind about a group there. If you accidentally hit ENTER your post sends. It's not easy making paragraphs.

you have to hold down Ctrl then press enter to start a new paragraph, that way it won't send.

Well, this royally sucks. About the only reason I come to IMDB anymore are the message boards.

Re: Message boards being eliminated.
Re: Message boards being eliminated.
The only thing about these other forms of message board is that they seem to lump all the NCIS programmes and I only watch the original, crossovers excepted, so am not interested in the rest. IMDb has nice thread themed layouts as well. I like IMDb for reading views that I don't always share, it is nice to get a different view of an episode or character.
Re: Message boards being eliminated.
it's a cryin' shame that the IMDb admins, in their ultimate wisdom, made the decision to eliminate the message board
neither Facebook nor Twitter is anything close to what this discussion board is!
not only have we been able to discuss this - and other - shows/movies, but there has actually been some very interesting & informative commentary made by some very interesting & intelligent people
I will really miss that aspect of this Board

Re: Message boards being eliminated.
My brother sent me a link about this tonight, and I'll admit that I got a bit teary eyed. I don't post a bunch on here, but I read IMDB every day. The forums are an important place to get info that I wouldn't know about, and to see other people's opinions about movies and tv episodes. When I've watched a movie or tv episode, I immediately come here to see what other people have said about it.
I would be mad, but it seems this is the way of the world, now. And IMDB has never been very friendly with the forums - wholesale deleting "older" or "longer" forums without rhyme or reason.
Yes, there are some bad posters, but I mostly only see the really bad ones on big movie forums (like Star Wars, etc.).
I am a forum moderator for another site, and we had some problem posters and so we decided to get firm and banned a bunch of people, and it's a lot more quiet in there. Obviously its not the same as a bigger site like IMDB, but I would think that there are other choices besides just deleting the whole thing. We're all obviously here, if the bad apples are so bad, we can choose to leave. Nobody's tying us down to the site.
I actually think I'm in shock. Maybe I spend too much time in here if I'm having this bad of a reaction to losing the site.

Re: Message boards being eliminated.
Also, I decide on which movies to watch by going to the forums. There aren't a lot of great movies out there any more (in my opinion), and I don't trust movie critics. I know that I can read a few forum threads about a movie and get a pretty good idea if I'd like to watch the movie or not. Honestly, I'll be watching a lot less movies now. Not worth wading through the crap to find the good ones.

Re: Message boards being eliminated.
I've been working on creating a couple of places for us to stay together but It's a bit (a lot) more challenging than I thought it would be.
Some sites don't allow for anonymity (shows email addresses). Others aren't very user friendly. And yet others don't allow for subject threads. Very frustrating.
I reacted emotionally last night when the news came out and jumped right in. It's going to be time consuming and could take a while (I could really use some web designer help).
I'll keep working as my schedule permits over the next couple of weeks.

Re: Message boards being eliminated.
I've been emotional, too. This is one of my best escapes from the "real world" and such a great place for info, discussion, friendship. I saw the IMDB shut down message within an hour or so of its inception and thought at first that it was a hoax. When it became obvious that it wasn't, I couldn't post till today. My dad just passed away a couple of weeks ago after his battle with ALS and this sad news added is a lot to take in. Please include me when a new site is found if possible.

Reddit? You can create a subreddit "r/(insert group name)". Allows for anonymity and fairly straightforward message board style
Alternatively there's Imzy - like Reddit with a focus on no trolling.

Re: Message boards being eliminated.
I joined Reddit yesterday and so far it seems the best alternative to here. It's pretty quiet there now, but if others joined it could be a good board.
There is an NCIS subreddit https://www.reddit.com/r/NCIS/however it's for all 3 NCIS shows which some may be put off by.

@ambrosia-apples
I'm with you! I hardly ever agree with the critics but will get my best info about movies/t.v. here. And there are more opinions to read. This definitely stinks!
Ha! That's how I felt, too. But for me, this has been a good site. It has kept me going through some tough times. I think of it now as time well spent.

Re: Message boards being eliminated.
I set up a very basic group on Proboards. Haven't added any bells or whistles or pics, but it is a start if anyone wants to use it. I will be happy to hand over ownership of it to someone who wishes to moderate it once I get it up and running. This site allows privacy, threads, and a half-decent search function. It can be set to private or anything in between. It's very easy to use.

Yes this BLOWSand better put it Blows CHUNKS (as we use to say decades ago).
I DETEST using Facebook. There is enough Data Mining going on in this day and age.
I REFUSE to use it. Or Twitter even.
Emails and Message Boards are what I am use to.
I am not a huge fan of NCIS however, I do 'like' to view it.
I LIKE to read people posts here on IMDB and get a better 'Feel' for this show and of course many other TV Shows and Films.
That will be gone because IMDB would NOT hire (or even ask & train their membership) people to MODERATE the boards correctly.
I have been a Member here for over 11 years.
Before that I simply read and did not subscribe.
So in short I have been around since the turn of the century
What really sucks about this is what will be LOST.
There are a lot of younger people that are finally realizing the Golden Era of film.
I still learn a lot from reading and contributing on the Boards about older films that are classics.
I just found out about this two days ago when I came to IMDB to read more on a classic 1958 'Western' by Billy Wyler.
The Big Country.
Even though I have seen this film a fair amount of times in my life and watched it with my father way back in the 1980's I still learned new information about that film.
This is true for just about every film or TV show I have ever watched
So much more to learn.
BECAUSE of people like you all here that can share, contribute, teach to even an old guy like myself.
Yes, there are the SNARKY ones that post
They are annoying but that is what the IGNORE BUTTON is for.
Or simply sensing it and skipping those posts
ORORIMDB can Man Up and Hire Moderators that actually READ and Moderate the Conversation.
There are petitions out now and I will suggest for you all to at least sign a few
Never knowmaybe it will work.
If not then I will say
Thank you to you all for sharing with us and teaching us and even making us laugh
Take Care and Goodbye!

IMDb is the world's most popular and authoritative source for movie, TV and celebrity content. As part of our ongoing effort to continually evaluate and enhance the customer experience on IMDb, we have decided to disable IMDb's message boards on February 20, 2017. This includes the Private Message system. After in-depth discussion and examination, we have concluded that IMDb's message boards are no longer providing a positive, useful experience for the vast majority of our more than 250 million monthly users worldwide. The decision to retire a long-standing feature was made only after careful consideration and was based on data and traffic.
Increasingly, IMDb customers have migrated to IMDb's social media accounts as the primary place they choose to post comments and communicate with IMDb's editors and one another. IMDb's Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/imdb) and official Twitter account (https://twitter.com/imdb) have an audience of more than 10 million engaged fans. IMDb also maintains official accounts on Snapchat (https://www.snapchat.com/add/imdblive), Pinterest (https://www.pinterest.com/imdbofficial/), YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/imdb), and Tumblr (http://imdb.tumblr.com/).
Because IMDb's message boards continue to be utilized by a small but passionate community of IMDb users, we announced our decision to disable our message boards on February 3, 2017 but will leave them open for two additional weeks so that users will have ample time to archive any message board content they'd like to keep for personal use. During this two-week transition period, which concludes on February 19, 2017, IMDb message board users can exchange contact information with any other board users they would like to remain in communication with (since once we shut down the IMDb message boards, users will no longer be able to send personal messages to one another). We regret any disappointment or frustration IMDb message board users may experience as a result of this decision.
IMDb is passionately committed to providing innovative ways for our hundreds of millions of users to engage and communicate with one another. We will continue to enhance our current offerings and launch new features in 2017 and beyond that will help our customers communicate and express themselves in meaningful ways while leveraging emerging technologies and opportunities.

Re: Message boards being eliminated.
Wow; IMDb is blocked at work, so I don't come to these boards nearly as often as I used to, so I almost missed this. I started at my job 20 years ago and have been a longtime fan of this site, watching its evolution over the years. I remember a time before the boards, when they had trivia and a Q&A session - a type of "ask the experts" that they eventually opened up to the public in the form of the "I Need to Know" boards.
I've seen people be kind, helpful, hurtful and all manner of being towards each other. I've seen a couple of people start relationships - both friendships and those that even turned into marriage. I've seen a couple of friends who have passed, often too early.
There are things I like and things I don't like about the message boards, but I've enjoyed them just being here for all this time. I'm going to miss them.

Re: Message boards being eliminated.
I really think IMDB is shooting itself in the foot by doing this. Really what is the point of this site if people don't have a place to discuss? I really believe they're going to see their membership plummet. This is pretty much AOL all over again except AOL had no choice due to legal issues. After AOL got rid of their message boards and forums, it went straight into the toilet. Now AOL is pretty much a backwater afterthought on the internet.

LOL! I was a "charter member" of AOL when I joined back in 1991. I eventually became a moderator in the Star Trek forum which gave me a free account. I was getting so many of those AOL floppy disks and CDs in the mail I was using them as drink coasters LOL

Re: Message boards being eliminated.
Tuna and Hawg,
I am starting to feel really old when it comes to message boards on the Internet. I started with message boards back in the Compuserve days, when they were called UseNet groups. Later UseNet became absorbed by Excite, and then Excite was absorbed by Yahoo.
I think at one point I was the owner or moderator for over 15 Yahoo/Excite Groups. It was from one of those Yahoo Groups that I first found out about the IMDB message boards in 2002. I had been familiar with IMDB from the UseNet days, but I had quit checking it out somewhere around 1999 (when it was purchased by Amazon). When I went to check it out in 2002 I found out that my old username was still active. I would mostly lurk, but I would occasionally post using the moniker of TheWolfMan. In 2007 I created this new identity and it has been no holds barred since then.
I had my first Compuserve account in the 1980's, but that was because I worked for the University of Utah as an adjunct professor. The U of U was one of the original DARPA sites. I have been connected to bulletin boards from home in some capacity since 1985, when I purchased my first PC that had a 300 baud modem! I thought I was so cool! I could connect to the world and do research on ERIC (Library of Congress' Educational Research Information Center) from home. But that was long before the GUI interface introduced by AOL.
Tuna, I never used AOL except when I was traveling back in the early 90's. I could quickly install the software (again and again) and get hours of local access to a local dial-up server by going through the 'local connection wizard'. My access name was RedRockDave..1-35; e.g. 1 through 35. I think I created that many new identities, just so I could use free AOL when I was traveling.
That all changed in 1995 when a group of friends and I created an ISP serving rural people on the West Slope of Colorado and Eastern Utah. I went from having to rely upon dial-up to leasing several fractional t-1 lines. By the time we sold the business to Comcast in 2011, we had long term leases on 15 OC-3 lines.
Times change. While bandwidth has increased and our ISP providers have consolidated to just a few high powered companies, our interactions with each other are being splintered. While we were once consolidated from a multitude of boards to a very functional IMDB consortium of boards, we are now once again being splintered off into different factions.
I think I am getting to old for this.
I have joined Joni's new group. As far as other forums? If you see a Desertdude, it might be me.

I heartbroken over this - haven't posted much, but I've been on imdb forever. Not just this board. Often I'll check boards for old movies or series. I like to see new posts on forgotten series! Also on some of the rarely-used boards, it's interesting to see a few posts a year going way back.
I'll be checking the new group links everyone posts. will try to lurk, who knows, even post

I'm a long-time mostly lurker here. I have messaged with a few of you about our "little show that could." For the most part, you're all a smart, funny, and interesting bunch.
Before the plug is pulled, and these boards go straight line, I just wanted to say that I will miss most of you, and your posts, very much.
Cheers from the Chesapeake, and good luck to all!!

Adieu from Aberdeen MD as well
For the most part it was a good ride, Cowboy.

Re: Message boards being eliminated.
at this point I don't know if I'm more sad or pi$$ed off
but I do know the decision to dump the IMDb message boards was made by a bunch of IDIOTS!!
I'm not buyin' their excuses for why they've done it either!
even tho' there's a few alternate options for us to stay "in touch", they will never be this board
haven't decided which forum I'll register on - if any
just know that I will miss y'all - my "board buddies"

Re: Message boards being eliminated.
this is one of the easiest boards to navigate, newbe's board is a 3 ring circus, and I don't trust anyone that could make a board like this one without knowing a lot of information about you, you are not safe on those boards.
I AM WATCHING YOU

Re: Message boards being eliminated.
Well that sucks. I don't like it but I understand it. It costs money to maintain a staff of moderators to ride herd on trolls and at least give a chance for visitors to have positive experiences in the boards. But as Nas said, there is an awful lot of knowledge about to be lost as well as excellent serious discussion about our favorite programs. I participate on the NCIS board the most and will definitely miss the exchanges with the regulars here.
Re: Message boards being eliminated.
Can't believe I'm in mourning over a message board full of people I've never even met. I will miss you all.
NewBe, if you get something set up, let me know, please!

Re: Message boards being eliminated.
Someone has started an online petition if anyone is interested:
https://www.ipetitions.com/petition/petition-to-keep-the-imdb-messageboards-going
After you submit it will go to a page asking for a donation, you do NOT need to donate, just hit the back button and you will see your vote counted.
If you do not want to sign it that's OK, but please I don't need anyone telling me how pointless it is, just don't sign, no harm, no foul.

Re: Message boards being eliminated.
Just so everyone know. The new forum isn't my board, I'm simply the one who got the ball rolling.
Yes, the site considers me the admin but I have no intention of being a dictator.
I do ask people to who come there to behave as adults.
