Classic Film : Weather in films

Weather in films

Films in which weather at times or altogether directs the plot.

For me, these come immediately to mind:

The Wind (1928) - wind
The Grapes of Wrath (1940 - drought
Doctor Zhivago (1965) - snow
Places in the Heart (1984) - tornado
The Impossible (2012) - tsunami

Others?

The time of the singing of the birds has come.

THE WIZARD OF OZ - tornado.

Re: Weather in films

"Three Faces West" 'B' movie about the okies starring John Wayne. Pretty good depiction of a Depression Era dust storm. Even the Duke couldn't make a stand against it. Eventually he give up and leads a bunch of people to the west coast.

Re: Weather in films

Not sure I consider a tsunami weather.

Twister - tornadoes
Eight Below - extreme cold
The Perfect Storm - storm
Noah - torrential rain and flooding

Re: Weather in films

Not exactly weather but the scene in Mission Impossible where he puts the explosive gum on the windows of the aquarium restaurant and all the water in the huge aquaria turns into a deluge of salt water, fish and broken glass filling the streets of Prague is pretty exciting.

It was a toss-up whether I go in for diamonds or sing in the choir. The choir lost.

Re: Weather in films

Singin' In The Rain ... when Gene jumps off the curb and STOMPS and SPLASHES .. just makes me smile every time !

The World of Suzie Wong ... there's a rain storm in Hong Kong that is much less joyous.

Breakfast at Tiffany's ... big downpour and a wet orange cat.

The Rains of Ranchipur.. Lana Turner and Richard Burton in the rain following an earthquake.

Re: Weather in films

12 Angry Men - oppressive summer heat/downpour

Re: Weather in films

Two films from Dutch born International film-maker Joris Ivens spanning 60 years...

Regen, Rain (1929)... This short film of rain falling on Amsterdam City has cemented its place in documentary history. An avant-garde City Symphony film, Regen was one of the earliest voices of avant-garde documentary, the film differs from other city films in that its focus is subtly shifted from city life to the actual rainstorm itself, raindrops, clouds, and other small details feature in this poetic and beautifully filmed weather transformation of the city.

Une Histoire de vent, A Tale of the Wind (1988)... Ivens travels to China and tries to capture winds on film, he sits in a chair in the middle of the Gobi desert, surrounded by equipment waiting for the winds to arrive.
Ivens was an asthmatic, functioning with only half of one lung, the wind had a physical metaphorical value to him. A profound blend of real and fictional elements the film reflects on his life and career.
Shaping our environment there are shots of the wind moving trees and water, shots of windmills, shots of rock formations carved by the wind over centuries which are juxtaposed with shots of magnificent sculptures carved by human hands.
An intensely moving swansong from one of the greatest 20th century film artists...

Re: Weather in mysteries

In a lot of mysteries, it's common to have a rainstorm/snowstorm, along with howling wind, etc.

Re: Weather in films

Isn't there a dark and stormy night at the beginning of The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

and some thunder and lightning in Frankenstein (1931) and all that followed ?
