The Goldbergs : The Mom

The Mom

I'm getting pretty sick of her. 90% of the episodes are about her being completely selfish and crazy obsessed crossing many lines. She pisses off her kids left and right, then in the last few minutes she gives some pity sob story trying to make the kids feel bad to justify her crazy actions.
I wish they'd focus on the kids more than her, she never changes and her same story has literally been done over 80 times

Re: The Mom

AGREED. Every ep she goes too far, the kids get mad then she cries then the 80s song plays while they do some grand gesture to apologize/tell her they love her.

A Boy Meets World episode had a joke about that kind of thing on sitcoms "HOW CAN WE LEARN SO MUCH EACH WEEK AND STILL BE SO STUPID?"

Alas, that has become the template for The Goldbergs, and it happens in almost every episode. Once in a while, they throw a conflict in involving the father, but mostly, it's the mom. Then, about the 20 minute mark, the sappy 80s song pops in on the soundtrack, and everybody's forgiving and loving and "learning a lesson."

Re: The Mom

I agree, I know she's trying to be a good mother, (no offence) but I feel like she's one of those mothers who cares too much about her kids

Re: The Mom

It's like the characters are stuck in an infinite loop. They learn their lessons and grow as characters for one episode, and then the next episode starts and they're right back at square 1. They learn the same lessons and grow again, only to return to square 1 again at the beginning of the next episode.

Re: The Mom

I'm so glad I'm not the only one!! She is horrible and is almost ruining the show. She makes it painful to watch.

I like the actress; she's great in Reno 911 and other things, but the character is too much.

Re: The Mom

I have complained about this type of storyline repeating itself over and over again. Usually with the mother. She gets her feelings hurt and one or more of the characters have to apologize to her even if she is in the wrong. They do this with other characters as well. Like this week, Adam has to apologize to Chad. Every week someone gets their feelings hurt and then the apologies have to come. I like the show. I just wish this formula would stop.

I wonder about another thing. Was the real Barry a good athlete or pretends to be good at athletics like the character Barry. I am going to guess it's the former.

Re: The Mom

Re: The Mom

I actually kind of feel sorry for her. Obviously as a mom my kids are at the top of my priority list, but it is not healthy that her entire world revolves around her kids. At some point no matter how hard she tries to stop it her kids are going to grow up and have lives of their own and then what is Bev gonna have? She seems to have very little in the way of a relationship with her husband, I've never even seen them kiss, and the only other person she is close to is her dad, and chances are she is going to way out live him. I suppose she will have grandchildren but if she is as overbearing of a mother-in-law as she is mother she may find she is not as welcome as she'd like to be in her children's homes when they get older, and whose to say they will even live by. She really needs to develop some other relationships and other interests.

Re: The Mom

It does seem like the show makes her a lot worse than what she was in real life. And she did end up outliving the grandfather and her hubby for that matter. She's married to another guy now. It does seem like she has a good relationship with her children from what I can tell.

Re: The Mom

This is one of the few series in the history of television that it's first season was the best.

It's rare, but here's a few..

My little list:

1. Growing Pains (ABC)
2. The Middle (ABC)
3. E.R (NBC)
4. Home Improvement (ABC)
5. Rosanne (ABC)

There might be a few more.

What are they???

Soapy swirls here, sponges and a squeegee there

Re: The Mom

Heroes and Proson Break were perfect the first season. After they each got drastically worse and you can tell the show was only created for the first season story and lost after constantly changing and dropping things.

Re: The Mom

Rosanne and Growing Pains I actually liked both more in about the third seasons. For Rosanne I liked when David was a regular and lived with them.
And Growing Pains I liked when they had the baby and the season with the nanny and building love story.
