Poldark : Alternative to IMDb for lovers of period drama

Alternative to IMDb for lovers of period drama

So gutted about the closure of the IMDb message boards. Feel like my right arm has been cut off!

For several years, I have been a member of C19. It was set up around 12 years ago by fans of the period drama North and South (the Gaskell one with Richard Armitage). It's a lovely site, very welcoming and civilized. A number of girls from IMDb North and South board have now made their way there in order to continue their discussions. It covers all period drama, in addition to North and South, and Poldark has been much discussed.

Give it a try. I look forward to seeing some of you there. It would be a shame to break up such a close and friendly group as we have here.

Re: Alternative to IMDb for lovers of period drama

Yeah, this has been a shock. I'm not sure why they decided to do this. I was trying to see if there was any other place that discusses all the shows currently in. So far, I haven't found any place.

One word answer:

Trolls.

And another one word answer:

money.

Re: Alternative to IMDb for lovers of period drama

Thanks for sharing, supergran. I've gone ahead and registered there so if you ever see posts from a "rove4", that will be me.

As coincidence would have it, I recently bought a copy of North and South by Gaskell a few weeks ago at a used bookstore. I haven't gotten around to reading it yet nor have I watched the Armitage adaptation. It's only been within the last two years or so that I've discovered I quite like period dramas so I'm slowly making my way through the treasure trove of stuff that's out there. I recently read Far From the Madding Crowd after watching the most recent movie adaptation. Anyway, I'll be exploring the C19 site and seeing what's there.

Re: Alternative to IMDb for lovers of period drama

Welcome, gveronica! I'll look out for you.

North and South is a wonderful book. But, dare I say it, I believe the adaptation is even more enjoyable than the novel. The book suffered from being serialised in a weekly publication edited by Charles Dickens. So it doesn't flow as easily as it would have done had it been written as one volume originally.

Enjoy, and DO watch the adaptation. It is magnificent.

Re: Alternative to IMDb for lovers of period drama

I think Far From the Madding Crowd was also originally released as a serial.

My mother has the North and South dvds. She'll be happy to sit and watch them with me. She's hounded me for years to watch period dramas with her but I've always turned her down. I didn't know what I was missing! I'm thinking maybe I just like seeing men in Hessian boots.

We may fight it, but we have to give in in the end! Lol!

Re: Alternative to IMDb for lovers of period drama

OMG THANK YOU

I love north and south it's my favorite period drama and the ladies (and possibly gentlemen) over on the boards are so kind. I didn't post there much but I enjoyed reading their posts and contributed a time or two.

Side note: I have yet to watch series 2 of Poldark and now I'm happy I can still talk to people about it after I do. Because no one I know likes the show.

Re: Alternative to IMDb for lovers of period drama

Thank you SO much supergran! I'd found another Proboards site that was set up as an alternative, but after looking through it, it appears it's not geared towards "period drama" fans. I've just registered on C19 and hope to discuss favorite shows in the future with you and others I'm familiar with from IMDB.

BTW, what an unwise decision it was to discontinue this message board. Half of the time I spend on the site is devoted to reading what others have to say about various shows. And while IMDB is a good reference site, with the discontinuation of these boards it'll lose its main advantage over sites like Wikipedia, Rotten Tomatoes, etc.

So pleased, merryapril!

I've no idea how unwise from a business sense the closure of the message boards is. The cost of moderating the trolls/spammmers, etc; must be more than offset by the benefits that the responsible majority bring to the site.

I shall still use IMDb for information, but I wonder how long the volunteer contributors will continue to work on the individual boards once the message forums are closed down?
