Re: Top 5 Underrated TV Comedies - Maron #1

I heartily agree about Maron, and especially on your mention of Episodes, maybe the funniest show of it's kind since "Life's Too Short".

G&F is pretty good, but nowhere near the level of the above.

The Carbonaro Effect (I watched 2, or 3) I found quite staged. Makes me wonder how many takes he did before even showing the very lackluster final attempts.

I've not see Reviews, but on your recommendation, I'll try it.

Re: Top 5 Underrated TV Comedies - Maron #1

Grace and Frankie isn't quite as funny as the others mentioned, so I can agree with you there. As for The Carbonaro Effect, you could easily be right that it is heavily staged/edited etc ... But when he gets someone just completely stunned, with their minds absolutely blown, I can't help but crack up.

Re: Top 5 Underrated TV Comedies - Maron #1

Maron belongs on that list but Episodes definitely does not. It's just not in the same league in terms of... I don't know, quality? Depth? Or whatever you call it... you just know when you see a show that it has that X factor or not. Episodes does not have it.

The rest of your list I am not familiar with, I may check out some of those shows.

Oh and "Life's too short" should also be there!

Re: Top 5 Underrated TV Comedies - Maron #1

I have never even heard of Life's too short and seeing that you are the second person to recommend it, I will have to check it out. It looks like it is off the air now, though, so it wouldn't have been eligible for this anyway.

A great scene from Life's Too Short…. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqA577_IoBk

One of the funniest bits ever!

Re: Top 5 Underrated TV Comedies - Maron #1

You know what, I have actually seen that scene from maybe a friend emailing it to me or something a while ago, and you are right it is hilarious!

Re: Top 5 Underrated TV Comedies - Maron #1

Maron is much better than Louie. Louie just sucks most of the time. I stuck with it way too long and realized that I maybe laughed once or twice in an entire season. Maron makes me laugh at least once per episode, although season 4 is a bit too much of a downer so far.

Episodes is incredible.

I'll check out the rest of your list but when I read you saying that IASIP is the greatest show on TV, I can't help but be worried I might be wasting my time. LOL IASIP is only slightly more tolerable than Louie but that's not saying much. ;)

Re: Top 5 Underrated TV Comedies - Maron #1

haha ... fair enough on Sunny, just going to have to disagree there. But I agree with everything else you said 100%. I stopped watching Louie after Season 2 because it just stopped being funny. He was going more for artsy and philosophical. This season of Maron is seeming similar to that too. I still like to give credit where it is due, and if these guys are more inspired by other topics right now, all good by me.

Re: Top 5 Underrated TV Comedies - Maron #1

I stopped watching Louie as a comedy. After that it worked much better.

Re: Top 5 Underrated TV Comedies - Maron #1

Yea, that is probably the best way to go about it.

Re: Top 5 Underrated TV Comedies - Maron #1

He perfected that style further for Horace and Pete. It feels like a classic 90s sitcom first, but in fact it is more or less a stageplay in 10 parts.

The term "comedy" has changed, as in today's entertainment it means "making people laugh", while Louie and increasingly also Maron, work towards its roots, following the example of Woddy Allen.

Re: Top 5 Underrated TV Comedies - Maron #1

I think that is good take on it. I prefer to laugh, but if the more "serious" comedy is done well, it can be excellent too.

Re: Top 5 Underrated TV Comedies - Maron #1

It is a shift from laughing at to laughing with. Woody Allen's genius was talking openly about the stuff that others were too ashamed to admit, but who secretly agreed with.

Thanks for the link! Maron IS a great show. So low-key and psycho, at the same time. lol. Episodes was hilarious. The other ones you listed, will check them out. I love the movie Coffeetown, but have never tuned into Sunny in Philadelphia. But I plan to.
Schitt's Creek is very under-rated, too, imo.

Re: Top 5 Underrated TV Comedies - Maron #1

Cool, thanks. I have been meaning to watch Coffeetown for years now and just haven't run into it yet on TV or Netflix or whatever. And I've never seen Schitt's Creek, will definitely give it a shot. Thanks for the recommendation.

Check out the one season long "Testees" and an AU show "Upper Middle Bogan" which may be available on Netflix as "Bess of Both Worlds." The AU version of "Rake" is halfway through the 4th season and the first three are on Netflix as comedy gold. I'm finding AU shows to be the perfect combination of UK sophistication and American crudity.

The black side of addiction recovery was beautifully done in ep 9. I laughed way more during it than the most recent Silicon Valley.

Re: Top 5 Underrated TV Comedies - Maron #1

Awesome. Thanks for the list of shows to check out. It's always easy when they are on Netflix. And interesting thought on AU shows, I'm not sure I have eve seen one, or if I have, I didn't realize it was one. Sounds like you could be on to something though!

Indeed this is gold.
