AV Club: Random Roles with Mary Steenburgen

http://www.avclub.com/article/mary-steenburgen-last-man-earth-her-lucky-break-an-233125

Right off the bat, she has some sweet things to say about LMOE:

The A.V. Club: After the midseason finale The Last Man On Earth delivered, its hard to imagine that anyone who watches it with any semblance of regularity hasnt been ecstatic at the thought of the series coming back.

Mary Steenburgen: Aw! Thats so nice to hear! We are really crossing all fingers and hoping that it does well. We felt very optimistic about it. I was emailing with Kristen Schaal this morning, as a matter of fact. Theres just a really close-knit thing among all of us. Its just one of those things that gelled, and we bonded. We get together when we dont have to! [Laughs.] We like spending time together, and within two weeks of the [filming of the] season ending, we were all emailing how much we missed each other and wanted to see each other! Thats a pretty lucky thing.

Its just a very creative experience, because it doesnt have a lot of boundaries. Because we are creating our own world. Were taking horrible bits of the past and our most petty selvesand occasionally our biggest, bravest, most optimistic selvesand playing survivors. Were playing people who somehow, through whatever it is we dont even understand about ourselves that caused us not to die with everyone else, are survivors. Sometimes we do that well, and sometimes were just showing the worst of humanity. I think its fascinating to play the gamut.

What I love about my character is that shes brave enough to recognize when she comes to the wall of inevitability that shes the only person there that is going to attempt to perform surgery on her friend that clearly has appendicitis. Before that, she tries every which way to get out of it, but when she comes to that, shes brave enough to do her best. And she doesnt succeed, but I love that I have both that kind of bravery and also Im deeply flawed and using a lot of whats going on as a reason to just anesthetize myself with booze.

Its just such a beautiful, crazy tone that we work in. It feels so unique, the show, that we do the deepest things and then the most ridiculous, absurd, idiotic things within seconds of each other. And all of it somehow feels right to the world that were creating amongst the seven of us.

AVC: The midseason finale felt like a warning shot to everyone watching that the show isnt just a comedy. It felt like a declaration: Weve been trying to tell you this, but in case you hadnt figured it out yet, now weve really underlined it.

MS: Right! And people that want it to just be funny should not despair, because there is so much true crazy comedy coming up. [Laughs.] But it definitely is in your face a little bit and throws a lot of depth in there, as it should. Its not the sitcom version of the end of the world or the beginning of the new world. Its much more profound than that, and just the edge that we feel sometimes when were on it Its terribly exciting. And its really all ultimately so inspired by Will Forte. You cant talk about a single bit of it without just saying that his is such a unique mind. Im around him every day for seven or eight months a year, and we constantly find ourselves looking at each other, watching our jaws drop at something he just said or did or is proposing that were going to do.

And the read-throughs are fascinating, because we dont really see these scripts until the day of the read-through. I dont know how much of the writing process you know, but Im told its not the writers fault, its Wills fault. [Laughs.] Hes doing so much, you know? Hes helping to write, hes editing, hes acting Hes completely involved. And theres this kind of wonderful Saturday Night Live improvisational edge to all of it, so sometimes when were doing our read-throughs, were literally reading it for the first time! So were performing, but were also the audience, because we dont know whats going to happen, and there are moments where were kind of gasping with surprise or getting emotional.

You wouldnt think its that kind of show, but it goes there. It really does. These last episodes that are coming up have some really extraordinary themes, and there are things in them that, when we were doing them, we just kept saying, Not only have I never done this before, but Ive never seen this before! [Laughs.]

3rd season??

I immediately remembered of Todd's laugh when Phil revealed that he was hidding in front of the christmas tree.

Re: Interviews and news

3rd season??

Nope, she was referring to the rest of this current season (2.5) after this weekend, there are 4 new episodes in April and 2 more in May. Unfortunately, near as I can tell, nobody involved with the show knows yet whether or not it will be renewed for a third season.

Renewal! :) (Re: Interviews and news)

LMOE and B99 have been renewed for 3rd and 4th seasons, respectively:

Third season WOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

Also this!

making it the networks top-rated live-action comedy

Re: Interviews and news

To be fair, those posts were two weeks apart it's possible during that time, the network was just waiting to look at the "Live + 7" DVR and streaming numbers for the first two episodes back from the break.

But yeah, while I was a little worried about viewers getting frustrated and quitting the show because of the three-month winter hiatus and then another three-week break for the holidays, considering that even its lowest-rated episodes so far have fared way better than the likes of Cooper Barrett and Bordertown, it shouldn't have been a surprise that FOX wouldn't want to let this baby go just yet.

I know that. Just pulling your leg. (metaphorically)

I tried to watch Bordertown. Even just to support the likes of Hank Azaria, Missi Pyle and Judah Friedlander. I tried anyway

IndieWire: Forte, Lord & Miller talk about season 2

http://www.indiewire.com/article/will-forte-wants-to-be-sure-that-the-last-man-on-earth-will-always-keep-you-guessing-20160312

Forte praised Sudeikis' work, saying, "With Jason you do get a little vacation. That guy is so good. He is so funny and such a great actor. He just makes everything better. It made our job as writers much easier. He makes us all look really good."

"[Will] doesn't go halfway on anything, and he really pushes it in a way no other performer that I know does," [Chris] Miller said, mentioning as just one example: "Later on in the season, [Phil] shaves half his body, and [Forte] had to walk around for months with half hair and a half beard."

"It makes me so happy, except for when I have to sit next to him at a Clippers game and that's what he looks like," [Phil] Lord added

And there are plenty more twists to come, according to Forte "A lot of times the sections of the show that we can let [FOX] promote are such small slivers. How the heck do you make an ad from this?"

Man, I cannot wait to see that (I mean, I've seen a few pix of him out and about with the half-shaven look; but I curious to see it comes about in the context of the story.)

"We totally underestimated the audience's appetite for surprise and invention," Lord said. "We thought we were gonna get them to take their medicine with this crazy pilot, and then eventually it would just turn into a normal show. But the feedback was, 'No, we want the crazy stuff.'"

If s.3 picks up were s.2 left off, looks like Phil/Tandy may be sporting the bald / clean-shaven look for much of the season rather than his usual long hair and beard. (Another look he could try: Keep shaving the head while letting the beard grow out)

Pop-punk rockers Good Charlotte are "the last band on Earth" in their new clip, "40 oz. Dream":

Includes stolen artifacts, ball-buddies, a mannequin, a malt-liquor pool, and parking-lot bowling. Oh, and love the flashlights taped to the overhead light fixture in the bar

They couldn't get the actual ball buddies from the show?? I bet Will Forte would have been OK with that. Unless they're booked on a promotional tour or something.

Deadline Awardsline: Brainstorming s.3, & more (Re: Interviews and news)

This past Thursday night at the Landmark Theater in L.A., Deadline held a screening of LMOE 2x18 and a Q&A panel with Will Forte, Kristen Schaal, Mary Steenburgen, January Jones and Cleopatra Coleman:

http://deadline.com/2016/06/the-last-man-on-earth-january-jones-will-forte-kristen-schaal-panel-interview-1201770472/

As problematic as these mystery [Hazmat] men may be, Schaals Carol and Colemans Erica are set to give birth next season, developments that should prove difficult without the trappings of a functioningor even existingsociety. Per Forte, family issues were a hot topic for debate among the shows female writers. Two women were saying, Theres no way, in this type of society, would I ever have a kid. And the other two were like, Well, you have to produce offspring to keep mankind going,' explained the Saturday Night Live alum.

And then theres childbirth itself without medical professionals around, just how will this go down? Im out of this, 63 year-old Steenburgen quipped, leaving Schaal to hysterically deliver a brief history lesson. If I may back in the day, before society became a little more advanced, women would just go in the fields, get on all fours, and just shoot the baby out. Theyd take the baby out and be like, Its done, said the Daily Show correspondent. Then King Henry VIII comes along, and hes intimidated by this. Hes like, No, no! I want to see it! So all of a sudden, women are on their backs, pushing out the baby in a very unnatural way, for the men to see it happen, added Schaal.

Im hoping, she continues, in this show, well all go out into a field, squat, and get it done.

.But who is going to deliver the baby? Forte deadpanned.

I kinda hope this panel was filmed so it can be a bonus feature on the s.2 DVD (like last year's Awardsline panel with Will, Kristen, Phil Lord & Chris Miller was included on the s.1 DVD)

Congrats, Will!

I wonder what episode/clip he must have submitted, though I know "Silent Night" (Tim McAuliffe) and "Pitch Black" (John Solomon & David Noel) were subbed for writing, both of those (Jason Woliner and John Solomon, respectively) plus "Smart and Stupid" (Payman Benz) were subbed for directing, and also "Silent Night" was subbed for one of the picture-editing categories My guesses / favorite standout moments for Phil/Tandy:

1) "Dead Man Walking" the holdup
2) "No Bull" tie: Tandy's "team" talk, and the scene with the rocks
3) "Silent Night" Tandy going back-and-forth between Erica's baby and Phil 2's appendix
4) "Valhalla" the "closure" song
5) "Falling Slowly" Tandy's love confession during Mike and Carol's sex scene
6) "30 Years of Science Down the Tubes" tie: Tandy talking to Carol's baby, and his goodbye to Mike

Re: Emmy nomination! (Re: Interviews and news)

I really hope he wins. It'll probably got to Jeffrey Tambor (again) but I'm rooting for Will or Aziz.

Re: Emmy nomination! (Re: Interviews and news)

Yeah but Will totally deserves it. I'm not a fan of comedy shows (prefer dramas, sci-fi/fantasy, horror etc) but I was hooked from the pilot with this one and that was all for Will, he is frikin' awesome congrats.

So go on. Kiss me. Kill me. Do something.

Re: Emmy nomination! (Re: Interviews and news)

Yeah but Will totally deserves it.

I agree 100%. He has put everything into this show and it's paid off. I'm still angry Alive in Tucson didn't win for writing. One of the best episodes of television ever done. And I've watched a lot of television. I really want him to win.

But I would rather he lose to Aziz Ansari just because..

Re: Emmy nomination! (Re: Interviews and news)

Well, he lost to Jeffrey Tambor, again (Good speech from him, though; and his Garry Shandling tribute was quite touching. )

I was a little disappointed that there weren't full clips for the Comedy categories like there were for the Lead Actor in a Drama category. But I noticed the little clip montage for Will apparently came from the "Fourth Finger" episode (Tandy spying on Mike in the ghillie suit, trying to comb over his half-'do, and on the beach after he rolled off the cliff).

I'd like to say I'm surprised but if you read back on one of these threads when they announced the nominees you will see that I'm not. Good for Jeffrey Tambor, I do love the guy, but it would have been nice to see this show get a win.

The good news is we're now less than a week away!

Re: Emmys pic (Re: Interviews and news)

Leslie Jones kills me. The celebrity Naked and Afraid she did with Peter Dinklage on SNL is one of the funniest things I've seen recently. There's a good bit from Seth Meyers too where they watch an episode of Games of Thrones that she had already seen but he hadn't and she freaks out through the whole thing. Good stuff.

Re: Emmys pic (Re: Interviews and news)

That "Naked & Afraid" bit was a hoot, but I especially love her Weekend Update commentaries the one rant about being given flowers ("They stink of DEATH!") was probably my favorite so far.

Will's Emmy nom reaction (Re: Interviews and news)

Here's what Will had to say about his nom:

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/lists/emmys-nominees-reactions-2016-announcement-911036/item/emmy-noms-2016-will-forte-911247

"I was talking to my family this morning and the Fortes are all very excited. It was my first time I've ever [watched the live stream.] I thought it was on super early in the morning and so when nobody texted me, I just figured I didn't get nominated. But then I went to the website and it ended up being really great. My agent, he called me up right after they announced it so we had a chat but then I went for a run because I have this weight loss bet with my buddy.* It's getting down to crunch time. My buddy and I really needed motivation so we said that if we don't reach a certain goal, we each have to donate $1,000 to the Trump campaign. So it's very important that I lose this weight. We just needed something that would for sure fire us up to do it, and that really has lit the fire under both of us. I have the advantage of having really fattened up last season so it's easier to lose that weight when you're grossly obese But it was a really good run, I'll tell you that. A lot of good energy. It's been a great morning. And we're starting production in a couple weeks so we'll be spending a lot of time in the writers room banging our head against the wall trying to figure out what we're doing. But it'll be fun to be in there and hang out with the people who are the biggest part of getting me into this position to be nominated."

* Will previously talked about his weight-loss bet (with friend/LMOE writer David Noel) on his recent Tonight Show appearance:

Will's Emmy episode submission (Re: Interviews and news)

6) "30 Years of Science Down the Tubes" tie: Tandy talking to Carol's baby, and his goodbye to Mike

Looks like I was right about this one:

http://www.goldderby.com/article/2016/emmy-awards-anthony-anderson-will-forte-episode-submissions-news-975318642/

Gold Derby has exclusively learned the episode submissions to Emmy Awards voters by two of the 2016 nominees for Best Comedy Actor. Anthony Anderson is entering the black-ish episode titled Hope. And Will Forte has selected The Last Man on Earth season finale called 30 Years of Science Down the Tubes.

Anderson is nominated for the second straight year in this category and also contends as one of the shows producers for Best Comedy Series. He plays Andre Dre Johnson, an advertising executive trying to pass along his urban upbringing to seemingly uninterested kids. According to the official ABC listing for his episode submission: When the kids ask some tough questions in the midst of a highly publicized court case involving alleged police brutality and an African-American teenager, Dre and Bow are conflicted on how best to field them.

Forte also contends again in this category for a second year running; he has three previous nominations in his career. He plays Phil Tandy Miller, who once believed he was the final person living after a virus has wiped out the population in 2019. According to the Fox listing for his episode: Phil and Mike grow closer than ever and the whole Malibu group gets a big friggin surprise.

Excellent choice.

Emmy episode analysis (Re: Interviews and news)

Analysis of Will's Emmy episode submission (2x18, "30 Years of Science Down the Tubes"):

http://www.goldderby.com/article/2016/emmy-awards-will-forte-the-last-man-on-earth-season-finale-news-1357924680/

PROS
Forte. Is. Funny. Thats something not all of his competitors can say, as frontrunner Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent) and dark horse William H. Macy (Shameless) both hail from dramedies.

Thanks to this episodes storyline, Forte gets to show incredible range, from emotional (dealing with his family issues) to silly (the jar scene in the attic).

The fact that Forte also creates and produces the series should give him extra credit points.

CONS
The Last Man on Earth may simply be too high-concept for the older, conservative members of the TV academy to embrace.

The show went way down in Emmy nominations, from four in 2015 to only a single bid this year. Are voters still watching?

Emmy Lead Actor nominees on favorite scenes (Re: Interviews and news)

Emmy Lead Actor nominees share their favorite scenes, what they learned this past season, and what other shows they'd love to have their characters appear on Will is the first one listed:

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/lists/emmys-aziz-ansari-tom-hiddleston-921067

Favorite scene

"It's more a series of scenes from the last act of the fall finale, when we cut back and forth between Jason Sudeikis [Mike Miller, his character's brother] hurtling down from space and Mary Steenburgen [Gail Klosterman] unsuccessfully trying to perform an appendectomy. It was fun to try something so intense and so different."

How has your character changed you?

"The main change in my life that I can attribute to Tandy is that I don't really use the F-word anymore. I used it pretty liberally for most of my life, but now I find myself saying 'friggin' instead. Thank you, network television, for helping me be able to hang out around priests and librarians again!"

I seem to recall him using "friggin'" before then (like when he was promoting Nebraska), and he still sometimes drops the F-bomb now (probably most heavily on his "Nerdist" podcast appearance last year). But yeah, for the most part, he otherwise appears to be favoring the former.

What other TV show would you like to see your character step into?

"Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Documentary Now!, Portlandia, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt any show where I'd get to work with my SNL buddies. And Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. I love that show, and Rachel Bloom was actually an intern at SNL when I was there, so it would fit under that SNL umbrella."

2016 TCA Summer Press Tour (Re: Interviews and news)

Some Will & Kristen quips from yesterday's LMOE set visit during the Television Critics' Association summer press tour (July 26 - Aug. 11):

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/fien-print/tca-summer-press-tour-day-917826

Over lunch with reporters on the Fox Lot, Last Man on Earth stars Will Forte and Kristen Schaal were in fine form, especially when discussing Forte's unique half-shaved look last season that included both his hair and his bushy beard.

"Oh, people on the streets thought I was a crazy person," Forte said. "I mean, it was a lot of double and triple takes. And I was already with the big beard, people would walk to the other side of the street at night. And this was just like you know, this was another level of just 'This person is insane.'"

But apparently Schaal had been willing to follow her co-star.

"In solidarity, Carol would shave half her head. And I was so psyched, because Ive had the same haircut for about 15 years now. Someone was, like, 'Im going to come do your hair. What does your hair look like?' Im like, 'Google any picture, Girl, because its never changed.' I just need it to change."

Nobody took her up on the offer.

This progressed, though, into a deep and philosophical Phil-osophical after Forte's character's name? discussion.

Schaal: Would you cut off a finger for a really, really good joke? Like, the best joke that I mean, that would like people would be talking about it 300 years from now?

Forte: If it was a pinkie, I might.

Schaal: Like if its the best joke ever done, but you had to lose a thumb?

After some deliberation, they both agreed that they'd consider it if, as Schaal put it, "f we would go down in history thumbless, but the funniest."

Harder to explain is Schaal's long, running joke about wanting Beyonce to guest-star on the show "because she needs to work on her acting. And I think that I could teach her a lot," which was followed by ample protestation that "Shes perfect, and she will realize that," continuing with, "I really dug a hole. Why did I come here? Why did we just start a feud with Beyonc? I love Beyonc, guys."

I'm only reporting Schaal's comments as encouragement for Beyonce to appear on Last Man on Earth.

I was hoping for a little more info, but I guess I can see why they don't want to give away too much (including the identities of the two new cast members/guest stars) before the season premiere; plus, FOX is on the schedule for Monday, so any news the network is allowed to announce about the show, it would probably be then

The Last Man on Earth (Sept. 25, 9:30 p.m., Fox)

This Seasons Theme:
"Every part of this group is teaching Tandy to grow," Emmy-nominated star Will Forte says. "[Losing his brother] is just another step which connects him to the group and makes him want to try even harder. He definitely will still always be a somewhat challenged individual. We dont want to rob the character of all the fun. Tandy will never be like, a normal person, but as long as his hearts in the right place, thats what weve been shooting for."

Where We Left Off: Fortes Phil Tandy bid adieu to his astronaut brother Mike (Jason Sudeikis), who appeared to be sick and dying from the virus that wiped out most of the population. Meanwhile, the Malibu gang faced imminent danger, as seaman Pat (Mark Boone Junior), accompanied by two cohorts, landed on their beach and headed towards the gang's house with weapons in their hands.

Coming Up: "It picks up right where Season 2 left off. Its a really fun first episode back. There are some good surprises." Not cryptic enough for you? Forte, who says even the network encourages him to offer up more episode spoilers sometimes, is a bit more open about the fate of Mike, who some viewers think may still be alive. "If we ever found out that he somehow didnt die, it would have to be for a very good reason, because we would hate to rob [the story] of the reality of that moment, says the actor. We certainly would never have started out the third season with, 'Oh my god, hes alive!"

Last Babies on Earth: Will we see Erica and Carol's babies "Yorba Linda" or "Bezequil," as Carol wants to name her offspring be born in Season 3, or, at least, will Tandy and his crew start to plan for the births without any medical assistance? "Well be dealing with the realities of bringing kids into this new world," Forte says. "Were still figuring out the timeline. Its very possible that if we didnt do a time jump, we would have to go several seasons to actually see these babies, but who knows if thats going to happen for us? Time, and Fox, will tell." KP

Entertainment Weekly (#1431/1432, Sept. 16/23):

2 Truths and a Lie

THE LAST MAN ON EARTH (Season 3, Sept. 25, 9:30 p.m. [EST], FOX)

Will Forte's postapocalyptic comedy ended its second season by dangling a few question marks off a Malibu cliff: Who are the two hazmat-suited, gun-wielding individuals headed for our survivors' shore with Pat (Mark Boone Junior)? Was that the last we will see of Mike (Jason Sudeikis)? And most important when will Phil (Forte) decide to open Mike's fart jar? Answers start flowing soon, but until then, Forte, the star/creator/exec producer, will tide you over and tempt you with these three hints, two of them totally true, and one wildly inaccurate. Start racking your brain.

1. Gail Klosterman (Mary Steenburgen) becomes a mom.
2. Mr. T comes to Malibu.

Re: Fall 2016 TV preview (Re: Interviews and news)

TV Guide (Sept. 26 - Oct. 2):

STRANGER DANGER! LAST we saw The Last Man on Earth's Phil (Will Forte), he and his pals were about to be ambushed by three people in hazmat suits.

One of the invaders is a familiar face to LMOE viewers: Pat Brown (Mark Boone Junior), the paranoid survivor encountered by Phil's brother, Mike (Jason Sudeikis), when he returned to Earth in March. But after the comedy was able to pull off a top-secret Will Ferrell cameo in Season 2, Forte is being coy about who else will pop up in Season 3. "I wasn't sure who would play the characters in those hazmat suits," the star and exec producer says. "But as we started writing, it became clearer who'd be perfect. I'm excited for viewers to find out."

The fresh faces aren't the only new things in store for the gang. With Carol (Kristen Schaal) pregnant, Phil will eventually have to go from acting like a child to helping raise one. "Phil is a bumbling idiot, but his intentions are good," Forte says. "So he'll still screw up along the way, learning from each mistake but not as much."

DenOfGeek: Q&A with Cleo & Mary (Re: Interviews and news)

Cleopatra Coleman and Mary Steenburgen Talk Last Man on Earth Season 3:

http://www.denofgeek.com/us/tv/last-man-on-earth/258598/cleopatra-coleman-and-mary-steenburgen-talk-last-man-on-earth-season-3

DEN OF GEEK: The second season of the show covers so much ground. Do you have a favorite scene or moment from the year?

CLEOPATRA COLEMAN: I'm gonna have to sayand a lot of people choose this momentbut Wills "Closure" song.

MARY STEENBURGEN: That's what I was going to say! And then also, I loved some of our first scenes with Will because it was so new and in a way what we were feeling was parallel to the script. We're making him dinner and he's getting turned on hearing all of these details about our relationship and stuff. I think it was so thrilling to realize, "Oh my God, I get to come be a part of this!" Todd's dancing was also delicious.

CLEOPATRA COLEMAN: That was amazing!

MARY STEENBURGEN: Also the surgery scenebut in an intense way! It was heavy and intense, I know especially for Mel and myself. I just felt like, wow. I've never done a scene that was so intense. They were all so incredible in having us do that. There are so many rich places to go because it's just the intensity of thinking what would it be like if there were no other people around. What matters and what doesn't matter. It's pretty rich stuff to mine.

CLEOPATRA COLEMAN: That was also our last scene with Boris, so it was genuinely sad.

MARY STEENBURGEN: You know, Mike Schur, who did Parks and Rec, just created a new show that my husband's [Ted Danson] on, called The Good Place. He came up to me when they were doing the pilot and said that he was a huge fan of Last Man. He said: "I want you to know, I might not be doing the show that I'm doing if I wasn't inspired by Last Man." And then he said, "I know other people have said the same thing, but you're taking ideas that we previously thought that nobody could do. It's going too far."

He said, "You guys have created a world that's never been created before," and that's what I felt when I saw that ending [of LMOE s.2]. It's so unique. So in terms of next season, all that Cleo and I know is that it's going to be some crazy, wonderful ride coming from such great writers.

I watched the first two eps of TGP the other night besides Albert Brooks' film Defending Your Life and maybe a dash of My Name is Earl, I thought the show was fairly similar in tone to LMOE. (Plus, Kristen Bell's character seemed pretty Tandy-like in her personality.)

Lastly, whats one thing that youd both like to see happen to your characters next year?

CLEOPATRA COLEMAN: Maybe a relationship that doesn't end in death! [Laughs] I'm like a black widow at this point!

MARY STEENBURGEN: I too have had a relationship that's ended in death! I'm hoping that maybe I'll get to deliver that baby for Erica Due to my medical missteps I'm not sure if I'll be chosen, but that would be cool. Honestly though, I am so not a writer in that way. I never go there in my mind. But I'd like things to work out well for Gail!

Fresno Bee: Will & Kristen comments (Re: Interviews and news)

http://www.fresnobee.com/entertainment/article103811056.html

Part of the reason for putting off any type of reality [regarding the virus] in the show came from the network. The show is a comedy, and the network wanted to make sure that came across.

Forte has learned enough about where the show is going to say its unlikely an exact reason for decimating the planets population will ever be revealed. Schaal jokes that even if the reason had been revealed, they probably would change it every year just to capitalize on what health threat was big in the news.

Since the show is primarily from Phil and Carol's points of view anyway, I think it would probably be fitting if we never find out any more about "the virus" than what they themselves already know. (Still, I would've liked the idea of them entertaining and debating different theories about where it may have come from and stuff maybe if Pat becomes part of the gang, he might be the one to spark such discussion)

Another thing Forte hasnt learned is whether or not this series will eventually get a proper ending when that time comes.

I have no idea. I always get surprised when they bring it back each year. But I think that at some point, if were lucky enough to be in a situation where we get do it for long enough, that wed feel like its time to end it, I dont know how we would do that, Forte says. We have a lot of great writers, so we could probably figure something out.

But I have a feeling well go out with some weird cliffhanger that never gets resolved.

Aww, I hope it gets a proper ending. Perhaps they should do like NewsRadio did and start treating their season finales like potential series finales

TV Series Hub: Mel talks LMOE (Re: Interviews and news)

https://tvserieshub.wordpress.com/2016/09/25/i-really-and-truly-in-all-honesty-believe-this-is-our-best-season-mel-rodriguez-talks-about-the-new-season-of-last-man-on-earth/

The concept of the show is very unique and Mel thanks the writers for that. Theyre just so wonderful, but in particular Will, his vision of things. I told him recently, and this was with no disrespect to any of the other nominees [Forte was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy], but I told him that they really dont make an award for what he does. He is just so involved, I sometimes feel like Im with the modern day Charlie Chaplin. He really is involved with every aspect of the show. The writing and the directing and hes editing it and hes coming up to the director and talking about getting certain coverage because he knows how its going to look in the editing room. And then after a take he runs upstairs to the editing room to work on another episode and then runs down and talks to the guy in the art department. He calls himself kind of a control freak, but I think he really is a visionary. There are so many other great people involved, but he really is involved in every single aspect of this show.

In season 1 Todd became involved with one of the last ladies on earth and in season 2 he even has two girlfriends. When asked what he thinks about that he replies: Its awesome! Its great that my wife is not jealous. She knows all the women and loves them all, so there was no trouble at home. So its been great. Theyve been such amazing sports. And I think its funny because all of us are the best last in the world. Mary [Mary Steenbergen, who plays the character of Gail, one of Todds girlfriends] plays the accordion so her character is the best accordion player in the world. And I guess Im one of the best last lovers in the world because there is just no one left.

Fun is how he describes the show. We have so much fun doing it, the entire cast has fun doing it, the writers seem to have fun, even though they work incredibly hard. Everybody works very hard, but its all very fun. And thats good because sometimes the shooting days are very long. "Typically we go 10 hours and sometimes well even go 13 or 14. Thank god everybody loves each other and gets along very well. Everybody, the cast, crew, writers, its one of those shows where you feel like youve won the lottery. In between takes well all sit in a circle and joke around with each other. Theres a lot of texting and iPhone stuff going on. So we really get along and we all have a lot of fun together. I know we enjoy each others company, which is nice because Ive been in other jobs where this wasnt the case and that can make the day really long.

Walking around with a half shaved face wasnt easy though. We didnt realize that we were both up for Critics Choice Awards and we had to go there. We were trying to figure out what we were going to do about that, to not give away any plot points. But then we decided to just go with half shaved faces. It looked so weird. It was also really strange getting used to Will because he had a full head of hair and this gigantic beard and it looked really different.

JJ on s.3 premiere cameo – spoiler alert! (Re: Interviews and news)

http://tvline.com/2016/09/25/jon-hamm-last-man-on-earth-season-3-premiere-cameo/

One person who instantly made the connection was [January] Jones, who tells TVLine she died laughing when Forte whispered it to me back in July at Comic-Con, adding, I thought it was ingenious given our history together.

Did she take any particular delight that, in the Last Man universe at least, Betty exacted the ultimate revenge against Don? I didnt, because I thought we had such a beautiful ending to our story, Jones admits. I felt like there was closure. As Betty, I didnt feel any anger towards Don. But I thought the fans would get a kick out of it. Thinking back to some of the stuff he did to Betty, maybe theyd see it as a little redemption.

Jones describes shooting the top-secret sequence as disorienting. It was surreal, to be honest, she says. I see Jon socially and we keep in touch, but it was very weird to see him on a [non-Mad Men] set especially one thats so modern playing other characters. It was bizarre. But it was so much fun. He was such a good sport about it.

As for what's next for her character:

January Jones, meanwhile, tells me that the fallout from Melissa killing Daryl has yet to be fully felt. In the premiere, you dont see much remorse, she says. But over the next couple of episodes, she goes through the various stages of grief and becomes unhinged. You see some violent, sort of emotionless behavior, and its pretty clear she doesnt know how to process taking a life. She becomes sort of dangerous and a liability. Its been an absolute blast to play all of these different levels of insanity, really. Ive gotten to do some pretty funny stuff.

USA Today: Lord & Miller Q&A (Re: Interviews and news)

Q&A: Phil Lord, Chris Miller on 'Zorn,' 'Last Man,' new Han Solo

http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/tv/2016/10/05/phil-lord-chris-miller-fox-son-of-zorn-last-man-earth-making-history/90722222/

Q: What did you learn from making The Last Man on Earth that you may have applied to these new shows?

Lord: The main lesson is that the audience is hoping for us to take risks. The biggest surprise of testing on Last Man was that people's appetite for it being strange was much higher than anyone anticipated. We all kind of said, "OK, if (viewers) can just get through the first two episodes, the show will get more normal and everybody will be fine," but then it turned out the opposite was true.

That's what's driving us to make shows like Making History and Zorn. We often talk about how we want to fail. I don't want to fail by being conservative; I want to fail by doing something no one has ever done. It was conventional wisdom when Chris and I were first working in television that you couldn't challenge the audience very much, and we just found out in this era that we were totally wrong.

Q: You initially envisioned Last Man as a movie before it became a show. How difficult is it to sustain these high-concept series beyond their original premises?

Lord: Having to top yourself is a good problem to have. It's so satisfying to look at an early cut of something and ask people to be more ambitious, and try something that seemed unthinkable four episodes ago. Zorn goes to some pretty ridiculous places, but the real comedy is coming from these little observations about life that are not as outlandish as some of the bigger moves in the story. This is a guy who has magical relics and fights weird monsters, and is also dealing with very basic work and family things. Trying to balance the tone has been the real challenge and success of it.

Q: How far do you typically map out future story lines and seasons?

Lord: Each of these shows have great people guiding (them). With Last Man, a lot of it is from the mind of Will Forte and his unique sensibility. I'd say this season is my favorite, it's really surprising and found its groove. But I wish I could say there was a grand master plan and we knew what was going to happen for the next six seasons of Zorn. I think the writing staffs like to write themselves into a corner and have to figure a way out.

AV Club: Kristen Schaal random roles (Re: Interviews and news)

AV Club: Random Roles with Kristen Schaal

http://www.avclub.com/article/kristen-schaal-scours-apocalyptic-wastelands-one-w-245136

On LMOE:

AVC: Will Forte wrote this role specifically for you, and you were already on Bobs Burgers and Gravity Falls when The Last Man On Earth premiered. How do you balance that schedule? Youre filming Last Man, youre hosting Hot Tub on Mondays, youre recording Bobs Burgers on Wednesdays. It seems like a lot.

KS: Yeah, I guess it is a lot. I still could handle a little bit more. [Laughs.] It works out great. I dont know. Its not that bad. Last Man days are very long because every episodeits almost like a 20 to 30 minute mini-film. The hours are long and its pretty intense. So the weeks that were shooting Last Man, Im usually able to record Bobs Burgers and sometimes I cant make it to Hot Tub either, but thats okay. Theres always a week hiatus from Last Man before we get back into it. So I can record Bobs Burgers or talk to you.

That being said, I guess I feel like my schedule is pretty easy-breezy because, unlike Will Forte, Im not running the show. Because I get to watch him run the show. Hell write a show, act in a show, edit a show and thats a schedule that is so grueling, that I feel like Im on vacation with the amount of work Im doing. Theres always somebody thats working longer hours and getting less sleep than me.

AVC: What about that part appealed to you, with Carol? Especially at the beginning, shes so regimented, keeping everything in order, and basically pulls Wills character Phil back from the brink of total mania. It seems like shes the only ray of sense, really, in that new reality that theyre in.

KS: Yeah, its a great part. Its one of those things that is being a character after I played so many parts where I come in for the day, and I say a few lines, and go. And this is the first time Ive really done the exercise on camera besides likesimilar to Sarah Lynn [on BoJack Horseman]I get to have some stuff and explore different types of scenarios and emotions and all the while saying a joke, you know? Like, bookending it with some sort of joke, which is kind of a funnot a hurdle, but a fun dance to dothat I would never get to be challenged with unless I was in this show. So Im just really grateful for my jobs.

AVC: Every time a new cast member shows up on that show, the whole tenor of the program changes, right? Because first it was you two. And then January Jones. And now its like this troupe driving around. Its really interesting how that show progresses.

KS: Its been bending shape for sure. But I would say every time you tune into the show, you know exactly what youre getting. Its kept the same unique feel throughout. Its a very offbeat show. For me, its one of those shows that Im really proud to be a part of because years and years from now when I describe the show, people are going to be like, Woah! They made that?! Yeah, dude. They made that. [Laughs.] Its a super weird, cool show with very distinctive flavors that Im happy about.

Other shows covered include BoJack Horseman, Gravity Falls, Flight of the Conchords, Bob's Burgers, and 30 Rock.

EW: Mid-season finale review! (Re: Interviews and news)

The new Entertainment Weekly (December 9, #1443) has a brief write-up of next Sunday's mid-season finale, "If You're Happy and You Know It" (3x9):

The last people on Earth are reaching peak despair. Melissa's (January Jones) grasp on reality continues to loosen, and Gail (Mary Steenburgen) is still "missing"/trapped in an elevator, so the depressed Carol (Kristen Schaal) replaces her with a fish. "You can't bring dead things back to life," Carol laments. "Hey, tell that to Jesus Christ," Tandy (Will Forte) replies. "And his buddy Frankenstein." So yes, there are still plenty of good jokes, but mostly this episode offers the kind of bittersweet delights in which LMOE excels. It all culminates with a lovely, Kinks-soundtracked cliff-hanger endingand the possible death of one of our friends. B+
~ Ray Rahman

Sounds we'll be getting back to " Unwitnessed Deaths" quality (or close to it, anyway) after these last two episodes of basically filling time between plot turns.

I'm not even gonna try to guess the Kinks song; Will's last couple picks ("Dreams" from the Percy soundtrack and "Daylight" from Preservation, Act 1) have skewed fairly obscure

EW & THR: Steenburgen talks mid-season finale (Re: Interviews and news)

Last Man on Earth star Mary Steenburgen spills on that fall finale shocker
http://www.ew.com/article/2016/12/11/last-man-earth-mary-steenburgen-gail-fall-finale

When you learned about the plot to have Gail trapped in an elevator and then that she would seemingly wind up taking her own life, what was your reaction?

I want people to experience this show without me blowing anything for them, because I hate it when people do it to me. So Im going to be careful about Gails fate. But this whole experience of the show has been this crazy, creative dive that Ive done with these people. Nothing surprises me on this show. People come and go sometimes you dont know what happens to them in the case of Jason Sudeikis [who plays Phils virus-infected brother, Mike], when were not 100 percent sure. Sometimes you do know in the case of Boris Kodjoe, who left the show last season after I killed him (laughs) during an appendectomy surgery [Y]ou really dont know whats going to happen, and thats what drew me to it in the first place. In terms of going on that adventure, I kind of knew what was going to happen in talking to the writers but I was willing to do that. (laughs) This is so hard to talk about.

Let me ask this: What did you think of everything in the elevator leading up to that moment?

We have wonderful scripts and [the writers] work really hard on them. But because Will is such a creative soul who isnt frightened by as far as I can tell, anything hell go anywhere, and it means that youre not safe, but it means youre going to have a deeply creative experience, which is what I had. And one of the things that Ive loved about it is that Id had my own personal thoughts about why Gail responded to this new world by trying to anesthetize herself, and in some ways, you could say its because shes the oldest one. And theres the possibility of being lonely because shes not in a place [like] the others where theyre talking about creating new life, and things like that. But for me, I began to work from the point of view of a lot of what motivated her had to do with her past. So I went to them at one point and said, How would you feel about Gail having a son and he didnt die in the virus? We dont say how he died, but he didnt die in the virus. And they loved that. Theres one reference to it if you happened to have watched the show, and its a scene with Kristen and myself, and then thats it.

So in answer to your question about anything that happens in the elevator, for me, every single thing that happens in the elevator had to do with that one fact: Gail had had a son, and he died.

***

You brought up her son, a revelation that was a powerful moment when Carol was trying to get Gail to sign those adoption papers. Anything you can say about how he did die? Is that something that you worked out in your head?

Yeah, thats my secret. I worked that out a long time ago, and I havent even shared that with the writers. Or any of the cast. Or even Will. But it definitely affected everything, but particularly those scenes in the elevator.

Of course, we never saw Gail shoot herself. It was just heavily implied. How much hope should we put into the idea that she could still be alive and maybe she just really shot Gordon to put him out of his torso-less, wigless misery?

Well um, thats an interesting thought, although I think Gails too smart to use her last bullet on a dead dummy, but I dont want to give or take away hope. (laughs) Yeah, I dont know what to tell you. I would love to spill the beans

***

What did you think of the way this story line resolves in the spring premiere?

I loved what they did, and I loved the integrity of the show. And I love that no matter who comes or goes in this show, they treat everybody with a ton of attention and integrity and affection. I mean, we still celebrate Boris and that character. I think that theres going to be so many cool surprises in the second half of this season. I know there are. Theres really fantastic stuff coming up.

***

If Gail is, in fact, a goner, what kind of psychological impact will this have on Carol? She all but drove Gail away, as Todd told her. Should we be worried about her?

Its a show that deals with both redemption and loss constantly who we are to each other and how we treat each other, and then surviving each other as well as life and this plague. For people who have survived this apocalypse, I love that nobodys talking existential theories about life and death; were in some ways just as small and petty as people are who havent seen what weve seen. And now and then, you see the effects of their past lives on their present lives. And I do love just the thought that these people have all seen a tremendous amount of death. They dont talk about it very often at all. They love fiercely again as opposed to being robotic or being detached. They connect, which is what ultimately I think were all put here to do and that we desire to do. I dont know if Im answering your question, but in terms of Carol, I think that all those things will be true, you know?

If Gail is alive, will this give her a new lease on life? She says incredulously to herself, Id give anything to see those freakin idiots right now.

(laughs) Yeah. I could see it giving her an appreciation for things. Yeah, it could go either way.

***

It seemed like the bullet that hit Gail was causing to bleed out, and maybe she wanted to end it before it came to that, and maybe also that she had reached final frustration. Is that why she appeared to resort to such a drastic measure? Was it also because what you said about her son too?

Right. Theres that. And I think theres also just a question of If this is going to happen, do I take control of this? Do I have control or do I give up control and have hope? Theres only one bullet, so once thats gone, then thats it. You have to have hope for as long as youre alive there. But I think the question is: Which is more important: Hope or control over a situation that has been not what you would have chosen? Its the final ability to make a choice.

Any hints about another story line the mental decline health of Melissa? Its a really dark story.

It is. I think shes doing such a good job of it. I dont know if it completely resolves itself right away, but I think it becomes even more fascinating. I will say that.

Those storylines are contrasted with something more positive: Lewis (Kenneth Choi) finally landing his test simulation flight. Speaking of hope, should we have some hope for that he might make it to Tokyo to search for his boyfriend?

I think so. Just as hope is whats fueling him. I love that whole drive of he and Tandy going back to his house. All of that just was very moving, and hes just a wonderful actor.

Any final thoughts to leave people hanging on? Anything you say could have meaning as people wait for months.

Well, if you love this show, you will not be let down by it. I feel as somebody who loves this show and loves all the characters and loves the people that rather than having gotten more careful or anything, this season in particular just continues to amaze. I really, really mean that. So I dont think theyll be disappointed.

'Last Man on Earth' Star Mary Steenburgen on Gail's "Painful" Past and Uncertain Fate
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/mary-steenburgen-last-man-earth-midseason-finale-954586

This season has been rough on Gail. She finally gets an "adopted" daughter and is part of a family only to end up here. What do you think has changed for her this season? Has she changed?

I think that shes always been somebody whos a grounding force in the show and Ive been sort of the truth teller in the bunch, the one who doesnt take any of Tandys stuff. And I dont think thats changed. Gail didnt suddenly become cuddly and all sentimental and emotional, but I think shes carried that secret [her son's death] around a long time and the fact that somebody knows it, I think made her connect more than she would have, and made her open up. Even though she may think theyre crazy, theres also a sense of fondness.

Let's talk about where Gail starts off in this episode she just wanted to some peace and quiet but she's stranded. What is running through her mind?

I think she sees her life flashing before her eyes and she knows shes most likely not gonna make it, and she probably has some regrets about how she was stubborn and pushed everybody away. There's a part of Gail that believes her son is out there somewhere, theres some comfort in that, and a sense of, in her version of heaven or whatever that is, I just think shes feeling, she got herself into this situation so she knows it's self-inflicted.

When Gail shoots and it backfires, she seems to lose all hope. What do you think she regrets as she sits there?

She literally shot herself in the leg literally and figuratively its her own fault, so her fate not only lies in her own hands but it was created by her. I can understand wanting to get away from these people (not these actors, Im in love with all of them), but these characters. But I can understand why she did it, and I think everything about her goes back to the fact that she had a son. Every single thing she does has to be about that, and the subject of family is very painful and the subject of being alone or being of value or choosing to live or choosing to die, all of that is informed by a couple of sentences a couple of episodes ago, that we never revisited again, and I love that about the writing.

This episode seems to be a lot of the characters' breaking point. What do you think it is that's suddenly affecting them in this way?

I think the fact that they were shot at and there was this path that made them feel unsafe, that affected them in different ways. Suddenly our world was threatened the life and deathness of it became much more epic

Going forward, what are your hopes for the group?

One of the things I love about this show is two characters you couldnt imagine loving each other really and [Tandy and Carol] start a relationship on television. I love that, without being sappy, you can see that these two people who are so dysfunctional, they make something very real in sense of love, and my hope for them is that their baby and Erica's is okay
