The Invitation : Spoiler- even darker ending

Spoiler- even darker ending

I thought, following Will's sold viewing of the Video on the laptop that he was resigned to his fate and was going to willingly drink the poison. That would've been a great ending imo.

And let those other people die with him? That would have been out of character for him I think.

Re: Spoiler- even darker ending

While that ending would have been darker, I think that it would miss out on my favorite element of the movie: the contrast between the way that Will and Eden choose to handle their grief.

I was very surprised that Will survived the movie. After the line where he told Kira that he wakes up every day waiting to die, I thought that he was going to die defending her or someone else. I figured it was going to be an ironic granting of his wish.

But I really like that Will realizes that it is possible to be deep in grief and sorrow and to actually still want to live. Having had some friends and family with severe depression and serious bouts with suicidal ideation, I find it uplifting that the movie points out that you can be neck-deep in pain and think that you are "ready" to die, but that deep down there is a will to live that is stronger. In fact, I think that his name "Will" speaks a lot to this element of his character.

We know from the very first scene that Will does not take the easy way out. He's not going to fall for "Just off yourself and spent sunny eternity with your loved ones!".

Damn, girl!

Re: Spoiler- even darker ending

Just keeping those English major muscles toned!

Actually, I think that both names (Will and Eden) say a lot about their beliefs and approaches to grief. Eden believes in an idealized paradise, etc.

Will and Eden

Double damn!

Re: Spoiler- even darker ending

You're welcome.

You should be writing reviews!

Although movies are often just a matter of taste (ex: I couldn't even watch all of Lalaland - bored to tears. Loved Manchester by the Sea -others hated it).

But still make a little blog and write reviews!

Re: Spoiler- even darker ending

I had a blog for a while with movie reviews (mostly horror and thriller movies), but it attracted a couple of nutcases and some weird stuff went down (like someone trying to find out my home address) and I was just like "NOPE!".

But thank you for the compliment. These days my time is pretty stretched anyway, so forums are a better fit for me.

Cool - I get it.

:-)

Re: Spoiler- even darker ending

Neat observations, thanks. I thought the movie was great & I'll miss coming on here & reading thoughts like that.

My main movie discussion hauntaside from IMDbis the Rotten Tomatoes general discussion board. I think that there are some other pretty good forums scattered around. I'm not a big fan of using social media (Facebook and the like) for movie discussion.
