Mr Selfridge : The son now has a British accent?

The son now has a British accent?

Did I miss something? As a young boy he spoke like the rest of his family but as a young man, he speaks with an accent? How does that happen because I'm envious of this.

Re: The son now has a British accent?

Harry sent Gordon to British public (private) schools as part of his vain attempt to be accepted into the aristocracy. This effort was also why, in later years,Harry refused to acknowledge Gordon's liaison with a shopgirl - even after it had produced 4 children!

Re: The son now has a British accent?

I somehow missed that. I'm only halfway through Season 3 so Gordon has not married yet.

Thank you for your response. This is a series that Ill watch again and hopefully pick up other things that I didn't notice on initial viewing. I'm thoroughly enjoying it.

Re: The son now has a British accent?

Just as a point of reference, Gordon didn't marry the mother of his children until after Harry's death - this is not mentioned on the show. You might enjoy doing a little outside reading on Harry's life, which was quite extraordinary enough in its own right, though significantly different from the one depicted in the series.

Re: The son now has a British accent?

Again, thank you. I'd never heard of this story until I started watching a few nights ago. I find it thoroughly fascinating. I did a little research about the real person but I might try to track down something in more depth, I'll see if any books are available. British TV is far superior to what we put out in the states. Just my opinion. It might have to do with my Welsh heritage, or not. It's just more authentic and not all Hollywood looking.

It's a different actor.

Re: The son now has a British accent?

I caught that but my initial intrigue was about the character first sounding American, like his family and then, having an accent as he came into adulthood . I missed the part that the response above explained to me. I'm sure I'll catch it on second view.

Re: The son now has a British accent?

I was just kidding : )

I imagine they chose the best actor out of those who auditioned, and decided early on it was conceivable he would speak with an English accent after time in London. If they chose someone with a less pronounced accent, they'd have been able to justify that as well.

But it is a little jarring.
