Jean Sorel : THE ROMAN SPRING OF MRS. STONE-?

THE ROMAN SPRING OF MRS. STONE-?

As a young teenaged film buff, I remember going to a local art house in our Jersey suburb and seeing Sorel in the terrific FROM A ROMAN BALCONY. I thought it would only be a short matter of time before the young actor "made it" in American movies (like Delon), and within a year or so, he was excellent in the forgotten film version of A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE. I also remember reading that he was being considered for the lead opposite Vivien Leigh in THE ROMAN SPRING OF MRS. STONE, in which he would have been perfect, but the role went instead to Warren Beatty (miscast and godawful) because, the article said, Sorel was having trouble with the English language. But he spoke excellent English in VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE (and didn't appear to be dubbed). Then he s 5b4 eemed to disappear from movies until he appeared with Carroll Baker in two of her dubious Italian-made skinflicks in the late 1960s (and the cut of THE SWEET BODY OF DEBORAH, though R-rated, released in the U.S. by Warner Bros. was obviously heavily censored). So what happened to such a promising career???
