Re: Is IMDb about to become another MySpace, Lycos, or AOL?
Hi, me.
Re: Is IMDb about to become another MySpace, Lycos, or AOL?
I believe that IMDB is underestimating the number of users they are going to lose when they shut down the boards. I for one will never be back here. But that's just me.
Re: Is IMDb about to become another MySpace, Lycos, or AOL?
Usage will fall off significantly, I'm sure, and it'll get truly ugly for IMDb if/when a viable alternative appears.
Re: Is IMDb about to become another MySpace, Lycos, or AOL?
maybe it's an intentional move to do away with itself.
Someone high up there got tired of it. checked and realized it wasn't making much money anyway, and decided to break it up. maybe.

Re: Is IMDb about to become another MySpace, Lycos, or AOL?
Or maybe it's an epic piece of trolling by Col Needham?
Re: Is IMDb about to become another MySpace, Lycos, or AOL?
I just don't see how they think traffic will remain the same or increase after eliminating the boards. When I first found this site I used it to look through the filmographies of actors, directors, and screenwriters, but you can get a lot of that info on Wikipedia now. You can find the list of upcoming film release dates on sites like Box Office Mojo. So the only thing I use the database for is to look up some minor character from a film, since IMDB has a more detailed list than Wikipedia, but I rarely need to do that.
I like to come on the boards after watching a movie or TV show to see what others are saying. I may not comment every time, but it's nice to see if others have similar thoughts about a scene or storyline, and sometimes people may point out something I may have missed.
I don't comment on the politics board as much as I used to, but I still check in a couple times a day to see what's going on. But once the boards are gone I doubt I'll have any reason to come onto IMDB every day, multiple times a day, and will probably change that to two or three times a month if they're lucky.

Re: Is IMDb about to become another MySpace, Lycos, or AOL?
Casual users discovered the IMDb messageboards when browsing the first time or two, and the boards became the main focus of many or most. How many will stick around once the boards are axed? And right now there are almost almost certain to be potential competitors racing to create new movie data sights with modern messageboards (search features, etc.) so IMDb will find itself on the back foot. Not a good place to be in the fast-paced and fickle internet age.
Re: Is IMDb about to become another MySpace, Lycos, or AOL?
First thing I do after watching a film is go to the boards and see what people say about it. Sometimes I'll contribute, more often I'll just read.
IMDB will have zero value for me after next week.

Re: Is IMDb about to become another MySpace, Lycos, or AOL?
Or perhaps enough people will discover that 10,000 reviews of "My Little Pony" by 10,000 3-year-old girls just isn't all that interesting.
Re: Is IMDb about to become another MySpace, Lycos, or AOL?
Certainly not by the time you've read review number 8,000 or so.
Re: Is IMDb about to become another MySpace, Lycos, or AOL?
No, it won't happen. IMDB is owned by Amazon, no one will dare try to compete with that. Not to mention all the time, energy, and of course money it would take to compete with them. It just isn't worth it.

Re: Is IMDb about to become another MySpace, Lycos, or AOL?
Maybe a Wikipedia-like alternative will arise?
Re: Is IMDb about to become another MySpace, Lycos, or AOL?
I'd like to think so. What an absolute idiotic move on their part.
The main reason why I visit IMDb is because of the message boards, apart from rating movies and T.V. shows. I'd have actual intelligent conversations after an episode ends with some interesting people. I like reading different theories posted about movies and such.
Once they get rid of every single board, then what kind of incentive do I have on returning to this site? It's of no value to me come Feb. 20th.
People are actually banding together against Col Needham. About 99% of the responses under http://www.imdb.com/board/bd0000042/flat/265872385?d=265872385#265872385 are against the decision, myself included. They are also canceling their Amazon Prime memberships in protest.
Once the traffic takes a nosedive and their revenue stream decreases, they'll probably reverse their decision.

Re: Is IMDb about to become another MySpace, Lycos, or AOL?
Maybe we'll all be proved wrong, and the site will thrive without messageboards? Hard to imagine, though.
Re: Is IMDb about to become another MySpace, Lycos, or AOL?
I wonder why they don't break it off, and then sell or license it? Then running it, dealing with the loons, and maintaining the software would be someone else's problem. So have a fire sale, dump it, and nobody's upset.

Maybe IMDb doesn't generate enough revenue?

Hey, MovieMoron, how's that "Persian Gulf Participation Medal" working out for you - you know, the non-existent medal you claimed to have "won" while on submarine duty?
Still wearing your submariner's Dolphin Wings as a lapel pin on your business suit as a senior executive at DreamWorks?
Maybe you can tell everyone about your wife, who you claim is a physician (although you couldn't answer, after weeks, a single one of my medical queries you said you were going to pass to her) and a member of the Board of Directors of the UCLA Medical Center!
Oh, and don't forget to describe that multimillion dollar home you claimed to have in Beverly Hills!
You have been exposed, MovieMoron!

Maybe a small operator with low overhead could fix it and grow it. But if that were true it would have been for sale.

Re: Is IMDb about to become another MySpace, Lycos, or AOL?
Either they believe IMDb earns so much they don't need the boards distracting them from the core business, or they aren't earning enough to sustain both. Or maybe it's something else, I don't know. But it's not easy to see IMDb benefiting from the closure of these boards.

Re: Is IMDb about to become another MySpace, Lycos, or AOL?
They say a tiny fraction of users come to the message boards, but I don't think I'll ever bother coming to IMDB at all after next week. If all I wanted was basic info about a movie, I'd use wikipedia.

Re: Is IMDb about to become another MySpace, Lycos, or AOL?
It may be that only a tiny fraction of non-English speaking users come to the IMDb's message boards. Otherwise the IMDb is probably mistaken or lying.
Re: Is IMDb about to become another MySpace, Lycos, or AOL?
I would like to interview you before the board shuts down. Or atleast get your contact, to do so.
