Elliot Page : Idaho about to pass a law where doctors can refuse to treat gays.
Re: Idaho about to pass a law where doctors can refuse to treat gays.
In what context would you be forced to let anyone inside your house? Also would you be okay if a doctor turned away anyone who was black?
Re: Idaho about to pass a law where doctors can refuse to treat gays.
Absolutely. Why should racism be illegal just because it is ugly? Everybody has different morals and values and some people don't think racism is immoral. Why force your mora

ls on another as long as nobody is being violent? A private practice doctor should be able to turn someone away because they are Jewish, Mormon, Muslim, Catholic, Mexican, Italian, caucasian, or because the patient slept with the doctor's wife.
If a doctor cannot tell someone to leave his private practice (which is his personal property) then why should I be able to tell someone to leave my home (which is my personal property)? I pick and choose who comes onto my property, so why can't a doctor pick and choose who goes onto his property?
I don't know what you do for your work, but are you obligated to accept every single client? Why is it more acceptable to turn away a client because they might be rude or difficult than it is to turn them away because they make you uncomfortable?

Re: Idaho about to pass a law where doctors can refuse to treat gays.
A doctor is licensed by the state is can actually be subject to AMA rules.
It is NOT the same thing as a private home. Doctors do have legal obligations to not discriminate.

Re: Idaho about to pass a law where doctors can refuse to treat gays.
Under the question "What can the AMA do about a physician I believe is behaving unethically or unprofessionally?" the AMA says that only about 30% of American physicians are members of the AMA. Therefore, only 1/3 of the doctors (on average) in the United States are members of the AMA. (See http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/physician-resources/medical-ethics/cod e-medical-ethics/frequently-asked-questions.page?)
And it varies on state by state as to whether or not a doctor must be a member of the AMA. I looked at Idaho's statutes and couldn't find any such requirement for the state of Idaho. And I believe that this discussion is talking about how Idaho is making a law saying that it is NOT illegal to discriminate. So, if a doctor is not a member of the AMA, then he has no legal or ethical obligation to not discriminate. If he is a member of the AMA, then he has no legal obligation--only an ethical one. The AMA is not a force of law. The most they can do is kick the doctor out of their association. In that same answer that I referenced above the AMA even specifically say that they have no right to take away a doctor's medical license for unethical behavior. They can only take away his membership.

Re: Idaho about to pass a law where doctors can refuse to treat gays.
Actually the federal government can take away his authority to write prescriptions (which is actually falls under federal jurisdiction) if they were to determine that the doctor's actions violated federal law and medical ethics, which refusing to treat a patient based soley on their sexual orientation might qualify.
It is highly unlikely that the law, if passed, could pass constitutional muster.

Re: Idaho about to pass a law where doctors can refuse to treat gays.
You're right--I'll grant you that much. The law would violate the 14th Amendment as is currently interpreted.
Re: Idaho about to pass a law where doctors can refuse to treat gays.
Add to the fact that any doctor who engaged in such discrimination is behaving in both a medically and humanly unethical manner and should be strongly condemned for such abhorrent behavior.
Re: Idaho about to pass a law where doctors can refuse to treat gays.
only if you consider homosexual human
Re: Idaho about to pass a law where doctors can refuse to treat gays.
Anyone who does not is, at best, a brainless fool.
Re: Idaho about to pass a law where doctors can refuse to treat gays.
well i hold that belief and i am not a brainless fool hense the ability to type
Homosexuals are both fully human and totally normal.
So you saying that you do not consider homosexuals humans?
IF you are making the claim that they are not deserving of being treated with the same respect and dignity of everyone else, then you are a fool and although you may be able to type your brain is severely undereducated and unused.

Re: Idaho about to pass a law where doctors can refuse to treat gays.
I think you mean hence the ability to type; clearly having the ability to type doesn't mean that ability is particularly noteworthy. Nevertheless, you are a fool if you think homosexuals aren't human, and I would love to see you attempt to justify that position.

Working my way through Ellen's page (ha), deleting threads that are none of my (or your) business.
So, goodbye.
Perhaps the OP just wants to reach out for some sense of community.

It's their business, their rules. If a gay business owner wants to deny someone service because they're straight, I see no problem with that. They worked to make a business and have it be successful, nobody should be able to tell them how they can run it.

Seems far fetched and highly unlikely to pass.
Anyone could easily sue in the federal courts and would win.
