Hmm. I think I see a pattern here...

Re: What other shows do Americans fans watch?

GOT

House of Cards

Mr. Robot

Homeland

I prefer binge watching. With Game Of Thrones clearly being the best of breed (it is the one show I often can not predict), I enjoy The Americans because I grew up with the Col War, went to college with the FBI and CIA in mind as a career, left undergraduate school as a left winger (politically more than socially), went to business school and wirked in a large public accounting firm before being recruited to join the investment sude of an investment banking firm.

Despite a successful career in business I have always looked askance at the reality of America versus the myth. I have no problem admiring the protagonists on the show if not outright rooting for them. I see the show as highlighting the personal and political contradictions on both sides. Everyone claims to be duty bound while shedding personal respondibility for their actions.

I watch today a candidate for the presidency that dodged the draft as a rich kid making up bone spurs in his feet, lying for years that he didn't dodge the draft but rather had a high draft number, and now publicly calling real war heros cowards and lying about donating money to veterans; selling himself as a great businessman when his flagship company has never been profitable, he has a littany of failed companies that were not only fraudulent in practice they were designed to be fraudulent and targeting vulnerable people, he has paid virtually no federal income tax and won't produce his tax returns . . . All of which is the tip of the iceberg.

How many posters that judge Elizabeth and Philip evil will bote for that man to be president? And you don't think the Russians had reasons not to trust the US to do right by them?

Re: What other shows do Americans fans watch?

So true! That was a blisteringly accurate assessment of Donald Trump -- a lying, sleazy, Klan-pandering THUG I would never in a million years vote for.

Very well expressed.

Now then... how about an equally long diatribe on the reasons why Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are also unfit for the presidency?

One paragraph each, please (as you did with Trump).

Re: What other shows do Americans fans watch?

Okay you said: "And you don't think the Russians had reasons not to trust the U.S. to do right by them."

And I'm guessing someone on here will write some variation of, "How can you posit a moral equivalency between the United States and the Soviet Union?"

And then your reply will be some variation of, "LOL! I never said they were morally equivalent!"

And then they will say something like, "What else are we to assume when you say that the Soviets had good reasons for not trusting the U.S?"

And then you'll say, "Well, didn't they?? There were reasons for mistrust on both sides."

And then they'll say, "And you don't think you are strongly implying a moral equivalency?"

And then you'll say, "LOL! Whatever! You can misinterpret my words all you want to! I'm done! Enjoy the rest of your day."

Yeah, I've seen variants of this exchange a million times over the years. I really don't need to see it again.

The thing, for what it's worth, the United States, while definitely not perfect (and really, what country is perfect?) was a far more moral, ethical and free country than the totalitarian nation that was the USSR.

Re: What other shows do Americans fans watch?

Ha Ha, I'm getting a kick out of your time-saving preemptive posts. I've done that sometimes over the years too. These discussions can get repetitive.

Re: What other shows do Americans fans watch?

It's sad that Clinton is even worse than Trump.

Re: What other shows do Americans fans watch?

Clinton was the valedictorian of Wellesley College and went on to be the first woman nominated by any major party for president of the US. She has taken more arrows than St. Stephen. More men have advanced their careers by attacking her than anyone in US history, including Eleanor Roosevelt. She is everything Trump claims to be but isn't.

Re: What other shows do Americans fans watch?

So your retort is "woman!". Unimpressive. Oh, and "valedictorian" of Wellesley. Who cares? Nixon was brilliant. So are Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio. Being valedictorian speaks more to ambition (showing up to carefully scheduled classes, doing all the homework, etc.) than intelligence anyway. Clinton's not that bright. She's also thoroughly unscrupulous, dishonest, and inept. For all his faults, real and imagined, at least Trump has had a private sector career. Clinton has never held a real job outside of politics. Yet she's somehow leveraged her political connections to become a millionaire. Or more accurately, her husband, the guy she's married to as a foundation for her own political career, has. She can't even take full credit for the Clinton Foundation and other corruption that's enriched her.

She was an unmitigated failure as Secretary of State, from the comically botched "reset" incident with Russia (insipidly conceived to begin with, the execution failed when the button she cheerfully presented the Russians actually translated to "overcharge" instead of "reset") to the unnecessarily slain Americans in Benghazi whose repeated requests for more security were ignored and whose deaths she proceeded to lie about in a clumsy cover up. In 2008 the Iraq War had been won (she voted for the war before getting jelly-spined and supporting cut and run John Kerry in 2004, and then opposing Bush's successful surge strategy in 2007/08 for reasons that she later admitted to Obama Defense Secretary Gates were political (http://thehill.com/policy/defense/194673-hillary-opposed-iraq-surge-for-political-reasons-gates-says), coalition troops had kept The Taliban down with a light footprint in Afghanistan, Al Qaeda had been defeated and humiliated, international Islamist jihadism was on the ropes and at its lowest popularity as measured by polling around the Middle East, US allies were confident about where they stood with Washington, Iran was isolated and under UN sanctions, and Russia and other geopolitical adversaries respected America.

Now, following several years of a "leading from behind" strategy, American withdrawal, gutting the US military, and general fecklessness, an international Islamist movement more bloody than Al Qaeda dominates huge portions of multiple countries and jihadism is more robust and popular than ever. US troops are back fighting in Iraq after prematurely pulling out of a country with a hard earned precarious stability in 2011 against military advice. The Taliban enjoyed a resurgence and thousands of Americans died after the Obama/Clinton administration launched an Afghanistan "surge" it immediately undermined by announcing politically motivated withdrawal dates in a war it transparently doesn't care about. Russia has nakedly conquered important regions of Ukraine. Israel, Jordan, and other US allies feel abandoned and have no confidence in Washington. Libya is a failed state. Syria remains mired in a horrific, festering civil war that could have been stopped with early, decisive action, and that eventually produced ISIS. Iranian sanctions are being irreversibly lifted as part of a US brokered deal that will legitimize their nuclear program and pay the oppressive mullah regime billions of dollars, even as it continues to support terrorism and announce its desire to see Israel and America destroyed. The administration has reportedly willingly been ceding the Middle East to Russian/Iranian hegemony, oblivious to the long term global impact of that. Millions of refugees already swarm across Eurasia.

The world has exploded into chaos. Clinton's tenure was a **cking disaster. She doesn't have one concrete, positive accomplishment. She is literally almost the worst possible person for the job of President.

That's without even getting into her getting caught red handed illegally setting up a private server to conduct classified government business, advising others to bypass security protocols to send her classified info, and then deleting her emails and spending months lying about all this. With what's publicly known Clinton should be indicted and prosecuted, period. Others have been indicted for similar but lesser offenses. If she's not indicted, it will just mean the Obama administration is too thoroughly corrupt to police itself.

Then there's her other many legal/personal scandals. Her jihad to personally destroy the many women accusing her husband of sexual abuse/malfeasance, which made her recent pandering claim that women alleging rape should be automatically believed incredibly ironic.

Her habitual lying, like when she painted a dramatic story of landing in Bosnia and running for cover under sniper fire only for witnesses and video to surface showing a calm, peaceful, smiling arrival and meeting with no shooting whatsoever. Or when she told multiple Benghazi victim family members at the memorial service not to worry because she was going to bring the man who made the anti-Islam video that she claimed got their loved ones killed to justice (the poor guy was soon arrested and jailed in an apparent abuse of her power), only to deny it later and imply all those family members were lying.

Then there's the fact that she's running on continuing Obama's disastrous economic policies that have brought about an indefinite, unAmerican stagnation. Except when she's not, by embracing a Sanders-like premise that the Obama years have been a disaster, and sometimes inanely promising to put her husband in charge of the economy (unfortunately she wouldn't be inheriting the same upswinging GDP growth, peace dividend, or internet boom he did, and hasn't mentioned successful, 1990s Republican Congress pushed policies like welfare reform, spending restraint, or a capital gains tax cut; plus aren't people supposed to be voting for her, not her husband?). It depends on what audience she's in front of and what the pr strategy sessions of the day call for, but Sanders has generally pulled her to the far left.

As for invective, please. Clinton helped invent the modern politics of personal destruction, and Trump has already received more fire from more sources than she ever will. 90% of the media/entertainment industry is in the bag for her, so don't whine about tone or treatment. She's actually had entire tv series (e.g. the cheesy Madam Secretary) launched just to promote her candidacy. Posturing as a victim doesn't work here.

I could go on and on.

Re: What other shows do Americans fans watch?

You need a doctor. Your head is going to explode come November.

Any of us with knowledge of the businesses Trump is in knew he didn't pay taxes, stiffed general contractors, and would be ripe for disection. Hard to believe Trump didn't see it coming. All Republicans have coddled racists for years but most didn't actively attack an independent judiciary.

He's toast for a lot of reasons but being totally incompetent at the job he seeks is the best reason. Clowns like you believe he should benefit from affirmative action, and just be given what he hadn't earned or daddy didn't give him.

Re: What other shows do Americans fans watch?

That's your weak comeback to the litany of concrete failures, crimes, and flaws of Hillary Clinton I posted? A canned lie about Republicans being "racist" and some more petty, speculative crap about his taxes that wouldn't matter even if it was true?

I think Trump is a piece of human garbage. But Clinton is an even more rancid piece of human garbage.

Re: What other shows do Americans fans watch?

sorry friend Paul,

you have swallowed the left's playbook. They are all crying foul against Trump, because THEY ARE TRYING TO PROTECT THEIR TURF. They are still upset that an outsider came to table and garnered the nomination. An outsider that many Independents, disappointed Dems, blue-collar, white collar, and Repubs voted for. Trump has garnered a wide cross-section of America, whereas Hillary has NOT.

We have become so conditioned in this nation by slick politicians who are media-coached and politically-correct (to get a larger voting base), that when someone breaks that mold, like Trump, he is labeled offensive. This is the Dem's playbook people.

It is the leftists, including that Warren lady (is she in any position to talk about someone else's temperment, when she comes across basically unhinged in her fake-passion rant against DT) who are trying to maintain power and their political interests, instead of doing what is right for the country.

What has Hillary done for the economy or jobs? Trump has given many workers jobs, including minorities and women. He is part of the solution, not problem. Yes, he may have had a few failures against his bigger book of successes, but EVERY SINGLE ENTERPRISE, SHOULD IT BE SUCCESSFUL, has had its shares of failures. General Motors filed for bankruptcy, remember -- and yet it is alive and well today and providing jobs, just like Trump.

Trump tells it like it is, but labeled offensive. Hillary is staged, staged, staged.

Re: What other shows do Americans fans watch?

Trump's support comes, by and large, from uneducated white males. The same type of guys that supported Scott Brown. Their support is emotional, not rational, similar to the Black community's support of OJ. As a class, they feel discriminated against, they belive they are victims. Heck, even Trump ses himself as a victim.

We need Bill Belichick running the country, not Rex Ryan who can't stop talking about himself. Clinton is Belichick and Trump is Rex Ryan.

Loved The Bridge! The actor who played Fausto Galvan was just on the 2-part finale of SVU, and he made me miss it so much...Linder and his marble-mouth, Daniel Frye and his partying, Sonya and her cool horse jacket?!

What a show! ;-)

Re: What other shows do Americans fans watch?

FYI, Longmire wasn't killed off...it was picked up by Netflix. You can binge the 10-episode Season 4, and they're currently filming Season 5. ;-)

Don't have Netflix. The only streaming video watch I is youtube, and I won't even watch a youtube video if it's over 5 minutes long.

Re: What other shows do Americans fans watch?

No love for Rectify? It's in my top 5, but I think 6 episodes per season and a lengthy hiatus doesn't help to gather viewers.

TURN: Washington's Spies is another good show that deserves bigger ratings. Things are really starting to heat up.

I like the Leftovers, The Americans, and loved American Crime Story. Not sure about Katrina next, but I'll be tuning in.

Fargo is my #1 Current Best

I'm leaving out past series and disappointments like Vinyl, guilty pleasures like Z Nation, and hate-watching Fear the Walking Dead.

Re: What other shows do Americans fans watch?

OK, I’ll bite. I have no idea of the sources from which you’ve developed your evidence to claim that “dishonesty is all too common among journalists.”

Because I get most of my news and information from written sources, I don't always rely on television news sources; but, over the course of a long life, I've often turned to television news sources for supporting information.

If none of the major television news sources in the United States and Great Britain that I’ve mentioned can be trusted to provide accurate information, then where among the hundreds of television stations would one turn in order to obtain credible information about what is happening in the world? As far as I can tell, I've covered all of the TV news and information sources available to me, apart from my local cable access station.

Sorry. There is no legitimate media surviving today. The following example from last night highlights the farce we now call "news media":

Illegal aliens chased down Trump supporters like prey as they left event
and
sucker punched dozens
and
assaulted police
and
pelted one woman with eggs and bottles
and
raised Mexican flags while burning American flags
and
surrounded and taunted an elderly couple
and
smashed car windows inside the parking structure.

CNN Reported: "Protesters and supporters of Donald Trump clashed in the streets of San Jose, California, Thursday night after the presumptive GOP nominee held a rally."

Point taken.

Re: What other shows do Americans fans watch?

Thank you, jimmythegreek. I thought that I’d posted a relatively innocent response to the question about what I watch on television. I had no idea that my response would inflame DowntownAbby’s sensitivities and cause the responses to rapidly devolve into having to explain my rationale for getting some news and information from television broadcasts.

I hope that your comment finally ends the "debate." Time to head back to sports.

If it is what it is, what is it?
