Politics : Manly Man Movie Alert: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Re: Manly Man Movie Alert: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.
Re: Manly Man Movie Alert: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Don't forget, Lee Marvin; TREMENDOUSLY great as a bad guy in this movie, AND "The Comancheros".
Re: Manly Man Movie Alert: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
I liked his acting, his WW2 service was admirable (frontline Marine) but I found out he was one of the biggest Hollywierd pinko LIBs. Damn, not surprised so many out there were pinkos.
Re: Manly Man Movie Alert: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
They were fighting to save their "Uncle" Joe, so of course they were pinko's, or in some cases clueless *beep*
Another WWII badass, Eddie Albert. And of course, Audie Murphy, but in his case I don't think it was so much being a badass as being plain nuts.

Re: Manly Man Movie Alert: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Well, Marvin was one all his life, so he must have been a king LIB dumbass.
I heard Eddie Albert was a combat vet in WW2. Was he a big LIB? I can't remember.

Re: Manly Man Movie Alert: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
I don't remember, but I suspect. I don't remember the specifics (before some idiot LIB will claim that I "lied") but he did something of the kind of "sigle handedly capturing 30 Japs" kind of thing, and might have done it twice.
Then, of course, actors, specially LIB actors, are born liars, so one never knows. Imagine there are 30 JAPS, tired of bombs dropping on them for 30 days in a row, they might consider surrendering to the first guy they see, who, of course, later claims that he "captured 30 JAPS, single handedly.".

Are you talking about Eddie Albert? As he was in the Navy, that would have been a neat trick. What he did do, was win the Bronze Star with Combat "V" for rescuing 47 Marines stranded offshore during the Invasion of Tarawa (and he supervised the rescue of 30 more Marines) while piloting a landing craft.

"Are you taking liberties with the liberty of the press, Liberty Valance?"
I suspect part of this movie's appeal to you is its theme of "printing the legend."

Re: Manly Man Movie Alert: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Jimmy Stewart was way too old for the part. Like he was when he played the young Charles Lindbergh in The Spirit of St. Louis (1957)
Aside from that it was a good film. Yeah, Liberty Valance was a serious badass. John Wayne put him in his place.
John Wayne and Lee Marvin were great.
Manly.

Re: Manly Man Movie Alert: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
He specialized in playing parts he was way too old to play. If I think about it, I can name at least 5 such movies.
Have you watched "The Comancheros", I think you would like it. If you watch it, look for the "Jailhouse Scene" with the guy "who has seen the light", funny as hell. And Marvin is even more badass in that movie, but his appearance is short but very good.

Re: Manly Man Movie Alert: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Don't forget that he plays an old man at the start and end of the movie. When you have one actor play the same role in a movie that spans decades, the credibility is bound to break down somewhere.

I remember the day the Duke died. A great man left the stage.

Re: Manly Man Movie Alert: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
John "Marion Morrison" Wayne sat on his cowardly thumb during WW2 while most ALL other similar aged and younger male actors, male married actors, male married fathers with children actors JOINED and served America.
REAL men served their country.
"actors who enlisted in ww2"

NOT John Wayne. John Wayne and 4Fs and light loafers didn't serve. Some say he had a movie contract. Right, imagine the boycott that would have taken place by America had any director/producer/movie studio DARED to stop a patriot from enlisting during America's Time Of Need in WW2. What bullsht.
Even Pro Sports consisted of second stringers for the duration.
Then John Wayne spent the rest of his pathetic life playing war heroes, cowboy heroes, and lived in a whiskey bottle while cheerleading for OTHERS to enlist and fight the Viet Nam war.
The Green Beret? What hypocritical BS.
Burn in Hell, John Wayne, drunk coward.

Big Jim McLain, one of the most repulsive anticommunist films made, even worse than [Red Dawn. Encouraging people to dob in their neighbours to the FBI for saying anything treasonous.
