12 Years a Slave : *beep* movies like this

*beep* movies like this

All i can say is that movies like this brings back all the terrible things that happened in history and this only deepens segregation. These kind of movies just deepens awkwardness between different skin color people and tells younger ones that we are not all the same. I am not trolling and i am not afraid to say to anyone ,,go *beep* yourself'' if that person (whatever skin color or believs he has) is being ahole. Anyway i hope this stupid segregation ends soon and we all will be able to communicate equally like we were made to do it.

Re: *beep* movies like this

What deepens segregation is people like you, who are presented with the terrible truth of the past that has yet to be healed. The past matters, yes, but only as a lesson to not repeat ourselves or to extend the residual effects of slavery that are till in play right now. Institutional racism is real in this country, directly, expediently, and totally affecting the live of African Americans. How can you not see that? Is it that the problem is still to big for you to deal with, so it's just easier to sweep under the rug? Or is it just ignorance and apathy that spurs you?

Re: *beep* movies like this

All i see that every now and then hollywood likes to make a something like this just fill a gap in oscar contenders section. If i am ignorant then its a bless for me because that makes me imune to all the bs and awkwardness.

Re: *beep* movies like this

Nothing to do with Hollywood, this was a true story that deserves to be on film, so according to you, we should forget all history good or bad, and not try to make decent Oscar winning movies And it's "bliss" kiddo.

Re: *beep* movies like this

I get that you want to sweep that bit of history under the rug in lieu of the positive ones, but no. Fnck you.

Re: *beep* movies like this

It was reasonably fair and balanced portrayal, I thought, as much as one can expect fom a mainstream production. It sure wasn't some anti-white propaganda piece as far as I could see.

Re: *beep* movies like this

To all you who blame me for being ,,another butthurt redneck or whatever'' i say: i was angry when i saw this movie and then of course i went to imdb to post my opinion. And i dont regret it because: in my line of work i see all kinds of people and everyone of them has the same needs and goals in life as me. I am a trucker and whenever a fellow trucker stops near me and asks for help i just help him or her(whatever a skin color is). And then i saw this movie and it (this movie) became a bad taste in my mouth because the other day i gave my last working light bulb to a felow trucker (who was different skin color person) because he needed it and then he thanked me back and that was a fair deal because a fine (for a broken light bulb) is bigger. And thats that. I wont respond to any more replies on this subject because i feel i already explained my opinion and the saddest thing is: Brad Pitt won an oscar for this movie. How *beep* up is academy?

Re: *beep* movies like this

Ever heard the phrase "those who don't remember history are condemned to repeat it"? Films about slavery, the Holocaust, colonialism, and yes, examples of non-white-perpetrated atrocities like 'Beasts of No Nation' and the book 'The Rape of Nanking' are vitally important educational tools.

I understand your point of view, but you're wrong. You've got it completely backwards.

Re: *beep* movies like this

What kind of idiot thinks remembering historical injustices actually increases segregation rather than ends it? Segregation survives wherever people think it's something that shouldn't be discussed.

@dmorkunas1

The reality is, we need to be reminded of this history, because like it or not,our country WAS a slave nation for its first 300 years. All the fckd-up issues we have about race today are a legacy of slavery itself that's been handed down through generations like old clothes. How the hell can a movie deepen something that was already here in society to begin with? That's a silly thing to say. As a black person, I think this story needed to be told because people don't realize just how bad slavery was, so they needed to be reminded of just how fckd-up it was without holding back. And that's what 12 YEARS A SLAVE had the guts to do (mainly because it wasn't a Hollywood film, which made all the difference.) Yeah, it's an upsetting film, but we'll never be able to move forward with the present if we don't reconcile our issues with the past when it comes to race, plain and simple. And saying "fck movies like this" sure as heck isn't going to help deal with the problems, either. It's movies like this that,in fact, help us deal with it.

Re: *beep* movies like this

Amen! But those who forget history are deemed to repeat it.

This movie is a schcking reminder to a war of terror against black people. It's like the black people's holocaust.

Re: *beep* movies like this

Not sure I agree with that. I don't agree with everything in this film, but I do believe that films like this help all people to empathize with the plight of the slave class in the United States, from whom many modern African Americans descend. The damage done to that group cannot be undone quickly. It was likely so profound that even if modern society can guarantee equality under the law, the descendants of the American slaves may never be able to achieve equality of circumstance at a level commensurate with the many other races that inhabit this great land.

I don't think there is anything wrong with telling stories from this regrettable period of American History. No matter what your race, or your parentage, or your culture. Forced slavery is NOT RIGHT. It never was. It never will be. The ills of slavery, and their lasting effects, can never truly be set right. The best we can do is acknowledge that our history contains a very disgusting chapter (more than one actually), and strive to treat our fellow man with whatever respect and dignity they earn through their deeds and attitudes today.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Anybody who judges an individual they've just met, on their perceived connection to a group, is a fool. Take folks as you find them, no matter who they may seem to be at first glance. If you don't, you'll simply end up misjudging an awful lot of people, for better or for worse, and you may miss out on having a really wonderful person call you 'friend'. Keep your guard up, because Lord knows there are villains and predators in EVERY group. But don't judge based on the group. That makes you a fool.

By the by. I'm a conservative (more often than not), a white man, and I voted for Donald Trump. Do with that information what you will. We'll see if anybody cares to prove my point.

Because you wanted change.

But at what cost to whom???

No man lies so boldly as the man who is indignant.

Re: *beep* movies like this

It is a credit to any society when it is able to deal with its own history, the good, the bad, and the ugly. American society is the better for its ability to present all those possibilities, allowing people to better understand themselves, and the world they inhabit.

What can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence.
