No, but they should. I recently worked on tall ships, and no one sung shanty's. Well this one guy did, and he was great, but he was a passenger. They used to have shanty men who would lead sea shanty's, but its a lost art.

Depends on the port and the guy. Some countries are known for thier hookers, so there is much talk by certain guys of what they will do when they get ashore. They got on and on and on.Then in the end, they don't even go to the whore house. Other guys don't mention hookers, but they are the ones who bang them. In Thailand, the hookers are brought to the ship by the pilot.

I was a Midshipman in the Merchant Navy, but they don't use that term, so I was actually called a cadet until I graduated.

It's LA harbor- I think busiest port on the US West Coast. Were the US Fleet used to be also, just until around 1940.

When the Titanic Master signalled all astern full, isn't it likely that the effectiveness of the rudders to turn the ship would have been drastically reduced?
He could have signalled one side to go astern perhaps, but to be most effective, is it possible he should have just turned the ship at full forward speed, giving the rudders their best chance to turn the ship?
Or even let the ship ram the iceberg full on, which no doubt would have caused substantial casualties but not the thousands that actually occurred. That would have allowed the fabled unsinkable separate holds to do their job.

The way the ship was designed to be unsinkable with several watertight compartments, the front compartment might have acted as a crumple zone, with the rear compartments spared damage and the ship able to float for longer. The unsinkable design would have been for a frontal impact, not for the ship to be sliced open from nose to arse.
