Carrie : God-Awful
Re: God-Awful
It was a really big let down. I never expected it to be better than the originally, but I didn't expect it to suck so bad.

My thoughts exactly!
The pacing was terrible.
They took many of the same lines/dialogue from the original and absolutely butchered the delivery and the timing.
In the original, many of those lines punctuated the mood and the story. Here they are tossed about like some careless salad.
And I am usually not disappointed by Chloe G.M. or Julianne Moore, but their performances in this? Very sub-par.
From the first shot we get of 'Carrie', she looks so pretty that it is hard to believe she would be such an object of peer scorn, strange mother or not.
The 'getting ready for the prom' scenes were wonderful in the original -- Carrie trying on the many shades of lipstick and the tuxedo fitting scene. Here, again, scant attention paid to those scenes or what made them work in the original, especially re: the contrast between the lightheartedness and what was to come.
In the original, we saw the prom as magical through Carrie's eyes. In this film, they look like they are at some hotel reception. Even when she says the stage with the thrones is so beautiful was unbelievable as to me it looked fairly plain and quickly slapped-together.
The mother's religious fanaticism & insanity that were so powerfully portrayed by Piper Laurie are watered down to portraying a pitiful, mousy, addled woman who engages in self-cutting.
And, there were those wonderful camera angles used throughout the original replaced by pedestrian cinematography.
I could go on & on, but will stop.
This film was terrible...

That made me laugh.

Yes, I agree. I never felt any pity for Chloe. I remember when I saw the original for the first time, Sissy was so great at making me feel almost embarrassed for her because she was so strange.

Oh I've seen the original several times. In fact, I think it was the first horror movie I ever saw as a child. I meant I need to watch it again to cleanse myself of this tragedy lol!
No movie will ever outdo the brilliant creepiness of Sissy's Carrie:)

Re: God-Awful
God thank you. This movie was a travesty compared to the original. For a REMAKE it didn't do anything new but add flashy effects, terrible acting, and a goofy prom getting ready scene complete with pop music. I usually love the chick who played the mother but she was extremely watered down. NONE of Carrie's mother's intense and very scary insanity shone through and she was far too sweet to Carrie. I like the chick who played Carrie but her wacky arm gestures and faces were gag worthy. Plus all those grimaces. *cringe* All this movie did was show how terrible cinema is becoming. The acting can't hold a candlelight to what the original had and the masses eat up this crap because of special freaking effects. There was no horror to this! The only thing that terrified me was listening to damn there word for word dialogue being regurgitated by these atrocious actors. My god, King didn't like the original movie (with good reason considering how it completely disregarded the weight of what Carrie White really did in the book), he must have had an infraction with this one if he ever could bare to get through the whole thing.

Where did you hear that? I've read on numerous occasions that of all the movies that have been made from his novels Carrie is his favorite. He was especially impressed with Margaret's death scene with all the knives and said that he wishes he'd thought of it.

Nope you're right! I was thinking of The Shining. The only thing I know he's said about this is that he didn't see the point.

Re: God-Awful
You know, it's funny. People bitch about remakes because they stray from the original too much and here you are, bitching about it not straying enough from the original.
Anyway, I liked this version. It's not nearly as good as the original obviously but it is leaps and bounds better than the TV mini-series they did in 2002. I thought they did a nice job of updating the story a bit and Chloe did a pretty good job playing the part too.

Re: God-Awful
Lol well to be fair she doesn't fly too far.....more like jump a 100 feet like The Hulk. Still?
Re: God-Awful
It's hard to take anyone seriously who thinks this movie is "God-Awful"...there are so many movies that deserve that moniker and this is not one of them.
Having said that, it is far, far, far, inferior to the original and if you've seen the original there is no real reason to watch this unless you are a cinephile (like myself) or like the actor(s) in the movie.

This movie is God Awful. It tried to be Carrie 1976 and failed.

Re: God-Awful
Don't agree at all. It did not try to be Carrie 1976, thank goodness, cause the original sucked big time.
The mother was out speaking to other people and enjoyed it with a big smile. What was that? Wasn't she doing everything to avoid other people cause she wanted to live isolated in the book? They got it right in the remake.
Piper Laurie was a disaster. Julian Moore gives one of her best performance in the remake.
The split screen scene in the end was annoying and terrible to put it mildly.
The sound effects were annoying and sounded like *beep* and it didn't end until the 90s came i suppose.

Re: God-Awful
I am a fan of the original also and I usually believe the conventional wisdom that if the original was good the remake is unnecessary. I only watched the first ten minutes of this and thought it was so awful I couldn't watch the rest. Maybe it became brilliant but it wasn't heading that way.
Movies that open with a gratuitous bloody birth scene are trying to shock and frighten us without having laid any groundwork. I call that lazy.
I can think of another which was a terrible remake with a gratuitous bloody birth and that is "The Heiress". The original with Olivia deHavilland is one of my favorite movies ever and the remake with Jennifer Jason Leigh was a stinker.

Re: God-Awful
Not really terrible, but I would say a disappointment. I did like it, but I feel it had the potential to be a lot better, but in the end just felt like a weak rehash of the original (although the original had better acting, more of an emotional factor/impact, better done prom scene that was actually creepy, etc).
I didn't mind Chloe Moretz as Carrie, but I felt more sympathy for Sissy (she looked sweet and innocent, while Chloe looked like she could have easily passed for one of the popular girls).
Prom scene was all right, but felt too short (and not as creepy; the red light in the original added to the already dark mood and feeling, and the music added to the creepiness, while here it simply felt generic). The fact that the blood dump was shown four consecutive times didn't really help, either.
Julianne Moore was great (and the cutting was a nice touch for the character), but I hate that they keep toning down the hysterical, fanatic touch in the character; Piper Laurie captured the role a lot better (at least, imo she did ).
Overall, I'll take the original any day. Even "The Rage" was better than this film.
"Speak of the Devil, and He shall appear."

Re: God-Awful
I think the movie had potential but the director did a really really awful job. she made a very cliche and terrible movie
Re: God-Awful
I agree. IMO i didn't love the original but i still appreciated it and at least it wasn't as unoriginal as this piece of sh*t.
Re: God-Awful
I almost turned it off, but forced myself to finish. I give it a 5, after thinking of giving it a 6. I won't give anything below a 5 if I can finish a movie, usually.
I liked Chloe in the kick-ass movies, but her acting has been flat annoying in every other movie I have seen her in. This, Let Me In, If I Stay, etc... For some reason I WANT her to be good, even though I can't stand her annoying liberal and feminist views she spouts out over and over on twitter. So I disagree with her politically and think her acting ahs been really bad lately and for some reason is till want to like her. lol.

Re: God-Awful
I thought of the 3 films, the 2013 version was closest to the book's vision since special effects have come a long way since 1976. They kept the telepathic parts out of the 2013 movie since that could have gotten pretty hokey. But, I liked how they incorporated current cyberbullying into the film to give it a modern feel for those not familiar with the book or the 1976 version.
God-Awful
I forced myself to finish till the end but this movie was TERRIBLE. As an original the campiness and utter ridiculousness might have worked, but you can't take a movie famous for its creepy premise and turn it into a cheesefest and think it's a good idea.
I need to go rewatch the original brilliant Carrie in an attempt to forget about this!
