Politics : What in the hell was so great about Reagan?
Re: What in the hell was so great about Reagan?
Nothing. Definitely was the most overrated president ever.
Note: It's especially messed up that he succeeded the most underrated president ever.

I'm honestly surprised by this
With your love of Trump I didn't think you would be Anti-Reagan and Pro-Carter.

Also Iran/Contra and neglecting the AIDS crisis.
However, he did take action on ozone depletion. I doubt that's what Republicans are talking about when they creepily inject him into conversation, but a Republican president taking serious action on an environmental issue is something we could only dream of today.
The journals "Science" and "Nature" also have a political agenda. - jon-gwynne

Re: What in the hell was so great about Reagan?
Homosexuals neglected AIDS, not Reagan. The health authorities even shut down epidemic tracking to protect their privacy.
Re: What in the hell was so great about Reagan?
Shut up, moron!
Reagan did nothing to address the AIDS epidemics in the country mostly because he hated gays.
Uneducated moron, go read a book.

Re: What in the hell was so great about Reagan?
I don't think that's necessarily the case.
If a younger person reads, with imagination and intelligence and empathy, just how terrible the 1970s were; and then reads that Ronald Reagan made America proud of itself again; that person should get it.

Re: What in the hell was so great about Reagan?
I lived through the '70s; I must've missed something.
-ushered in the era of Wall Street grab and greed
-deregulated the New Deal legislation that prevented the Wall Street greed
-committed constitutional treason by selling arms to a sworn enemy, Iran
The problem is having lived beyond the '80s and with the mess that Reagonomic's "trickle down" theory left behind and still infects us.

Re: What in the hell was so great about Reagan?
Between 1965 and 1975 virtually all crime doubled. Rape even tripled. You had two fuel crisis's. Vietnam fell. Iran fell and hundreds of American hostages were taken. The Soviets invaded Afghanistan. Cars barely ran as they struggled with newly added emissions equipment. Hard drugs were released in great volume. The PLO started to make it's presence known with Munich and followed that up by attempted revolution in Jordan and worldwide terror attacks. Lebanon fell into civil war. Airplanes started getting hijacked on a regular basis. Unemployment went up and you had double digit inflation.
And to top it all off you had the rise of Disco.
You are fake news, lol.

Re: What in the hell was so great about Reagan?
The Soviets invaded Afghanistan.
we made too big a deal out of that anyway, but I guess it suited Reagan's Schtick..even though nothing direct was done about it anyway.
The PLO started to make it's presence known with Munich and followed that up by attempted revolution in Jordan
Other way round.
"Black September" in Jordan was in 1970. The Munich Olympic attack was 1972.
the last all-out Arab-Israeli war about a year later.. which prompted the big Saudi oil embargo..
Re: What in the hell was so great about Reagan?

Re: What in the hell was so great about Reagan?
Yes, they were.
We could add to your list Carter's appointment of Paul Volcker to run the Fed. The White House then announced there would be a recession, and Volcker then increased interest rates in order to control inflation by slowing the economy. This resulted in a deep recession that peaked early in the Reagan years when employment hit 10.8%, much as GW Bush's recession peaked early in the Obama years (at 10.0%, by the way).

We tricked the Soviet Union into invading Afghanistan; their own Vietnam.
But unlike the more economically loose America, the economically rigid Soviet Union couldn't handle the expense.

Re: What in the hell was so great about Reagan?
You had to live in the 1970's to appreciate Reagan.
I did and I don't.
The bottom line is that Reagan was a lying demagogue. It was nothing but blind luck that he didn't bankrupt the US first; he and (ex-CIA chief) GHW Bush didn't have the first clue about the impending demise of the Soviet empire. And when Iran was a true enemy of the US, he gave them aid and comfort (that's treason) in order to raise funds for his vanity war in Central America.
Jimmy Carter and Paul Volcker deserve full credit for ending stagflation. And the economic "boom" in the 1980s cost far more than was ever gained. That was when vulture capitalists sold off the US' manufacturing industry for scrap to foreign interests. You can also thank the American taxpayer for bailing out all of those yuppies who got rich by borrowing money from S&Ls and then not paying their bills.
Those are the things that Reagan should be remembered for, not the falsehoods.

Ah, did you see my #4 fave film of '14, 'Kill the Messenger'?
I can't believe that Reagan is still so revered today and criminal actions weren't taken after him.
And that poor journalist. He wrote this brilliant expose but was overshadowed by that dumb Lewinsky scandal??? That article should have put Reagan in well, not prison exactly given his dementia but under lock and key in an institution.

Re: What in the hell was so great about Reagan?
Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
But I think he is so revered based on two things.
1) He was the Republicrat saving grace after the disgrace of the Nixon years.
Ford was just an annoying bump in the road who was a klutz who didn't do a thing.
2) His catch phrase, "Mr. Gorbachov, tear down this wall!"
Somehow all the Rontards think that is the one and only reason why Russia communism, and then the wall, fell.
We had nothing to do with any of that. Credit goes to Gorbachov and not The Dummie's words at all.
It was just coincidence.
We claimed a false victory of the Cold War when it was the people of those communist nations that are the real winners of it all.
Trump lies:
Mexico is going to pay for the wall.
I can stop federal funds.

Bullsh-t. Gorby was trying to SAVE the USSR from collapsing but it was too late. If anything Lech Walesa, the Pope and the moron Günter Schabowski had more to do with ending the USSR than Gorbachev.
Re: What in the hell was so great about Reagan?
I disagree.
Gorby brought in the era of glasnost and perestrokia.
The credit can be shared as long as none of it goest to Ronnie boy.

It was not really that greateveryone just felt great, or all optimistic and uplifted and stuff, after seeing movies like Rambo, Red Dawn, and Top Gun..
It's true that Reagan had some knack of making even potential nuclear war seem not that scary..that he would kick Russia's ass in it anyway.
You have to understand everyone was coming off the low of Vietnam.
Maybe it was a bit like the Nazis must have felt in the 1930s, coming off the low of 1918the economy is picking up, everyone is either working on the Autobahns or in the army, you got your 'Strength through Joy" Germans-only cut-price cruise-ship vacations..everybody has something to goose-step about.
Reagan had one thing in common with Obama, actually.
although both were fkn bimbos really, both married to battleaxes, but both had this 'soaring rhetoric' stuff goin' on.

Re: What in the hell was so great about Reagan?
The middle class survived long after he left. You can blame many programs for that. I once detailed how the housing bubble went back to the 60s, how it caused past recessions and brief periods of rebounds.
So people can still study socialism on their own and realize it isn't for everybody. Group think is sci-fi

Re: What in the hell was so great about Reagan?
He made AIDS. That's pretty neat.
Re: What in the hell was so great about Reagan?
AIDS is a messy topic. While it's true that Reagan publicly ignored a deadly disease for 5 years, considering that with the incubation period those who died up to Rock Hudson (1986) were already infected when or shortly after he took office, and considering how the big city gays fought against "Nazi" measures like shutting down bath houses even when their own health departments warned them that something deadly was afoot, Reagan can only be blamed for his lack of empathy. The various public health agencies poured tons of money into AIDS research and they have ever since, yet those most likely to become infected continue dancing with the "Mask of the Red Death."

Re: What in the hell was so great about Reagan?
Politics is a matter of style and substance, or often style versus substance. Reagan was a terrible President and had a dreadful administration, but no one could deny he lacked style.
If a large part of politics is appearing personable and likeable (which of course it is), Reagan was a natural.
I know words. I have the best words - Donald J Trump, POTUS

Re: What in the hell was so great about Reagan?
Conservatives are by and large, people with beta personalities. They hate celebrities the way the Muslim terrorists were supposedly jealous of the West. Because they could never be them. That's why Reagan was a conservative hero. Because he was one of them. A celebrity.
Re: What in the hell was so great about Reagan?
While I agree that Reagan is somewhat overrated, he certainly was a good President.
Fixed the ailing economy
Helped end the cold war
Brought down the Berlin War
Fought Public sector unions
Restored Confidence and unity in the nation
Ended price control on Oil
The election of 1984 should be a sign that he was doing something right.
In regards to you points
Did he? Can you source that?
Middle Class still exist.
Agreed. The war on drugs has been a disaster.
He wasn't diagnosed with alzheimer's until 1994. 5 Years after he had left office. Even if he had the disease while in office(and there is no evidence to support that he did), he certainly was not aware of it therefore couldn't have lied about it.

Re: What in the hell was so great about Reagan?
Your claims that Reagan:
Fixed the ailing economy
Nope. It was Carter-appointee Paul Volcker that fixed the economy. Ronnie's contribution was to urge Americans to "charge it" without thinking of the consequences. And when the credit card bills came rolling in, most Americans' finances were much worse off.
Helped end the cold war
The only "help" from Reagan was massive boondoggle spending that could just as easily have bankrupted the US first. Gorbachev deserves top honors for ending the Cold War.
Brought down the Berlin War [sic]
I presume that you meant "wall" not "war". The people of Germany did that. And if you're going to claim that Reagan's "tear down this wall" speech to Gorbachev was the cause-and-effect, good luck finding a photo of Ronnie swinging a pick in Berlin.
Fought Public sector unions
So you think that the first shot fired against the middle class made him a good POTUS?!?!? No, it was the people who organized and collectively bargained for their fair share who deserve credit there. Us skilled workers who also negotiated well are the backbone of America.
Restored Confidence and unity in the nation
Too bad it was all based on lies. Any "confidence" went away when the Reaganomics house of cards fell in upon itself. And the unity of collective bargaining certainly isn't to Reagan's credit! See above.
Ended price control on Oil
No, Ronnie never ended OPEC. The 1980s oil glut had a complex cause that included more fuel-efficient cars and OPEC producers who overproduced. Ronnie didn't "do that".

Even if that is 100% true. Volker was part of Reagan's Administration to. Reagan could have went elsewhere

The members of said union were breaking the law by going on strike. Reagan was right to fire them.
No, Ronnie never ended OPEC. The 1980s oil glut had a complex cause that included more fuel-efficient cars and OPEC producers who overproduced. Ronnie didn't "do that".
I didn't say he ended OPEC I was he ended price controls.
1981: Eliminated price controls on oil & natural gas
Reagan's first executive order eliminated price controls on oil and natural gas. Production soared, and the price of oil declined by more than 50 percent. This was a remarkable contrast to President Carter's gasoline rationing, which limited us to buying gasoline every other day depending on the last number of our license plate. From scarcity of gasoline to abundance in six monthsthis was one of Reagan's first evident accomplishments.

Re: What in the hell was so great about Reagan?
Won the Cold War, rebuilt the economy, fought the drug war by locking up criminals for crack possession, saving hundreds of thousands of lives and resulting in the plunging crime rates in the 90s
Re: What in the hell was so great about Reagan?
Won the Cold War,
Eh - NO. He simply was president when the USSR collapsed.
rebuilt the economy,
Exaggeration. He helped a temporary boom take place which was already starting to shape up. I give him credit for helping, but "rebuilding the economy" is vastly too much credit.
fought the drug war
Arguably one of the biggest blights on urban areas and huge waste of resources by expanding it so much, instead of just going after suppliers
saving hundreds of thousands of lives
Highly arguable, as he perhaps helped destabilize the Middle East and give rise to Islamic extremism.
and resulting in the plunging crime rates in the 90s
No evidence of that.
Re: What in the hell was so great about Reagan?
1. Nope, his massive defence budgets and funding of anti-communist rebels forced the USSR into near bankruptcy and forced them to sue for terms, the idea that the collapse of communism was somehow inevitable is extreme humbug. Put it this way, Jimmy Carter sent the Mujahadeen Lee Enfields, Reagan sent them Stingers.
2. No, you misunderstood, I meant by imprisoning all the 100,000s of crack dealers and users he saved their lives and the lives of those they would have killed on the outside, hence why crime fell in the 90s, so many were locked up.

Re: What in the hell was so great about Reagan?
1. Nope, his massive defence budgets and funding of anti-communist rebels forced the USSR into near bankruptcy
He "forced" them to do nothing. They spent of their own volition. Reagan's buildup was just posturing. Anyway, even if they did foolishly react to Reagan's spending, a few years of excess spending isn't going to bankrupt a nation not already teetering on the edge of collapse.
Reagan sent them Stingers.
A move which came back to bite us, later. We gave rise to Middle East terrorism and the likes of Saddam in our attempts to play that region as pawns.
I meant by imprisoning all the 100,000s of crack dealers and users he saved their lives and the lives of those they would have killed on the outside, hence why crime fell in the 90s, so many were locked up.
That's debatable. I've heard different sides on that issue but have seen little which is definitive.
What in the hell was so great about Reagan?
-Destroyed the middle class.
-Responsible for lobbying and the drug war, two things that ruined and will continue to ruin the country for the foreseeable future.
-Lied about having Alzehimer's while he was in office.
I now await your "snowflake" and "libtard" responses.
