Re: Compass in Van

Just started watching so no clue. Just wanted to comment on your list of fav tv shows bc it's identical to mine except I put breaking bad at 2 ahead of GoT. Although that may change as more seasons develop.

Re: Compass in Van

Ha that's great, when you say exactly do you mean it? Thanks for the response

Re: Compass in Van

If I had to guess I'd say since the group she was looking for is called The East, the compass is what tipped her off to the fact that the guy she was with was a member.

Re: Compass in Van

The truck wasn't his unless he put the compass on the mirror when he hijacked the car

Re: Compass in Van

Did he say that? I was doing something else through part of that scene so I must have missed that part. He could have put the compass up. I left when he pulled up and she got in, then I came back when she pulled her phone out. I didn't think I missed that much.

Re: Compass in Van

I mean they were on the train from somewhere to Pittsburgh I believe, he must have stole the car, they rode the train to the new city...

Re: Compass in Van

That's a good point. I honestly didn't pay much attention in the first part. I did catch that he was the one who said The East wasn't real, or something to that effect. Pretty much knew he was a part of them from the get go.

Re: Compass in Van

Or they simply had the car parked at the destination, seeing as they must have known where they were headed.

Re: Compass in Van

I think you have it right, that's what we're meant to understand from the scene, despite the fact that it does not make sense, since Luca must have stolen the car. But then, his pulling up at the exact place where Sarah/Jane pops out at the moment she does also isn't very logical and neither is her realizing that Eve's real name is Jessica from an 'A+J' tattoo (not only can she not get 'Jessica' out of 'J', she can't even be sure Eve's real initial is J and not A).

Re: Compass in Van

I don't think he stole the van. He used that van to drive Sarah to the house where The East lived. He probably had that van before since he went immediately to it once he got off of the train and the train wasn't too far from the East house.

She knew what Jessica's name was due to her being a secret agent. She probably knew all of the identities and backgrounds of the people within The East before she took on the mission and tied to investigate within them.

Re: Compass in Van

She did not know who they were before joining them. That's the reason she joined them and was sending photos back. Everytime she was shown at the office they revealed the real name and cover identity of the ones she had managed to help identify - first the leader and Doc and the second time Izzy.

Re: Compass in Van

The van was probably left there by the East intentionally, so Luca would have a car when he got into town with Sarah/Jane. She knew that Luca was a member because the compass pointing east is the symbol of the group. The compass was also probably intentional - they wanted her to find them just as much as she did. Luca knew who she was and that they needed her, so he was probably driving around looking for her at the train yard.

Sarah "knowing" the name Jessica was a lucky guess. She was lying when she told Eve she knew a lot about her - she didn't know anything. Sarah's an intelligence operative, she would know that around the time that Eve was born, approximately the late 80s/early 90s (also a guess, we don't find out until later that she was actually 22), the two most popular names given to girls in the US both began with 'J' - Jennifer and Jessica. She had a 50/50 chance, and Jessica was the more popular of the two. We don't actually even know that's Eve's name - she says how do you know THAT name, not how did you know MY name. It was just a really good bit of deductive reasoning with a bit of luck as well.

Re: Compass in Van

How did they know she was undercover?

Re: Compass in Van

Lol at all of the people in this thread not understanding the movie because all of them were walking in and out of the room while watching it and doing other things. She knew he was in the east because the compass was the same compass as their logo, and when she moved it the compass was fixed at the east point. Ultimately it's a little silly that he would be driving around with a compass that gives their organization away.

Re: Compass in Van

To be fair, the group itself didn't seem to have logo at all. At the beginning of the film you see the movie's logo, and not the group's. In order to make out any meaning from that compass, you'd have to know exactly what to look for.

Re: Compass in Van

The compass was broken and set to always point to the east - an identifier of the group.

Re: Compass in Van

Wasn't the compass BROKEN so that it points EAST no matter what direction you turn it in???

Since BENJI also tells her that he and LUCA were the only 2 who knew who and what she really was, and that HE had also been WAITING for her for a LONG TIME, apparently the BROKEN COMPASS that points EAST was also a part of the SET UP that he planned to use to TRAP her so that he could USE HER and MANIPULATE HER into getting him the INFO he wanted about others like who were LIKE HER.

So she also FALLS for the TRAP, and right into the WEB of the SPIDER who wove this WEB with which to TRAP her, by using the BROKEN COMPASS as a way to ENSARE her.

Fortunately, by the end of the story, she also figures out in time that he's not the kind of person that she should hand over the INFO to that she has about the others working UNDER COVER (which was also made EVIDENT to her by the way BENJI didn't give a damn about how the DOC had been arrested ... and he also thought his arrest was justified ... IF she'd also gotten him the INFO that he wanted her to get for him).

In other words, this was also a guy who cared more about HIS MISSION and didn't give a DAMN about the CONSEQUENCES it had for others (which was also made EVIDENT to LUCA who LEAVES and tells BENJI that IZZY meant more to him than the MISSION did).

At least that's the way I see it.

Re: Compass in Van

Yes, FINALLY! XXPO has the answer - the compass was altered, most likely with a magnet behind the face, to make sure that no matter what direction in which they moved or how you jiggled it, it would return to EAST as opposed to the needle moving to Magnetic NORTH. it was a way to indicate that THAT CAR belong to The EAST or was SAFE for EAST members to use. It was likely placed there for Luca's use since they knew he'd be returning.

So, Sarah sees the compass, being a dim bulb, it takes her a little while to grasp that it is pointing EAST when the car is not . She then jiggles it, the needle moves BACK to East and she contrives to slash herself with the broken aluminium can so Luca will feel sorry for her and consider giving her aid.

I don't believe that it was a trap - just another part of the long-range plan. Benji assumed that sooner or later, her security company or another one like it, would attempt to infiltrate and most likely had tried in the past. Benji, the leader was waiting for somebody he hoped he could flip, just enough, to use in his final Jam
