Film General : Ranking the Star Wars Films

Ranking the Star Wars Films

Now that there are 8 Star Wars films, its fun yet fruitless to rank them all. We recently did this on a podcast. We also talked about The Last Jedi title and some of our favorite Star Wars memories.

My personal rankings:
1. Empire
2. The Force Awakens
3. Rogue One
4. A New Hope
5. Return of the Jedi
6. Revenge of the Sith
7. Attack of the Clones
8. The Phantom Menace

Re: Ranking the Star Wars Films

I don't know what I disagree with more. The best Star Wars film being ranked as the worst or the worst Star Wars film being ranked as the best.

Re: Ranking the Star Wars Films

Yeah, that is disgraceful. What a complete idiot.

Re: Ranking the Star Wars Films

Revenge of the Sith is the best and most well written film of the entire Saga. Attack of the Clones isn't as good/well written as Empire, but it's right after.

Re: Ranking the Star Wars Films

Revenge of the Sith is the best and most well written film of the entire Saga.

Lol, you must be kidding, right? RIGHT?!

Re: Ranking the Star Wars Films

Lol, you must be kidding, right? RIGHT?!

Not at all. It's Othello for the millenial generation. That film and Clones dared to raise the Saga to a level of adult sophistication, and both are easily the most emotionally powerful Star Wars movies ever made. They easily outclass A New Hope and The Force Awakens in terms of their character development, interior conflict and thematic depth.

Fanboys prefer the original trilogy and Force Awakens for their light hearted "charm", which emphasizes the more sophomoric elements of the Sci-Fantasy genre. Revenge of the Sith and Attack of the Clones find the Saga's emotional core.

Re: Ranking the Star Wars Films

I'll grant you this much... I do think that the narrative of the prequel trilogy is actually pretty advanced. The themes it was going for, its political awareness (the whole false-flag war idea), its attempt to deal with government bureaucracy, and the attempt to depict a functioning, inter-connected galaxy, as well as the more inter-personal relationships, what makes someone good or bad, all that... was very ambitious and well intended. The problem, however, is the execution. There's no way around it, those films just flat out suck. So much of them was so silly in a juvenile way, or so ridiculously over the top and cartoonish, or so cringe-worthy horrible, that it's hard to believe that anyone involved with those films thought what they were doing was going turn out to be good.

I've always believed that if someone else, or some other group of people, had taken Lucas' general idea for what he wanted those 3 films to achieve, and executed them at a higher level of quality... they could have been fantastic. But Lucas trying to write and direct them all himself just straight up didn't work. He should have developed the story outline, and then hired other people to write the scripts and direct the films. Because the dialogue is garbage, and the movies are so poorly made that it's hard to take their subtext and themes seriously. There's worthwhile stuff in there, but its buried under buckets of crap.

Re: Ranking the Star Wars Films

Thematically, you're dead on. But the script writing in any given scene is terrible, and flat acting only made it that much worse. I appreciate the attention to detail with all the political machinations displayed in the prequels, but the dialog and motivations of the characters was as silly as anything from the OT.

For the record, my favorite SW flick is Rogue One, because it manages to capture some of the 'charm' of the OT while giving us real world stakes for the characters in this universe. It examines the duality of the characters in the story to a greater extent than the prequel trilogy while still managing to be 'fun' without cartoonish characters like General Grievous or even Palpatine.

I can't really rate them separately as they're all one story, the way I see it anyway, but from personal preference

1. Empire Strikes Back
2. The Phantom Menace
3. Return of the Jedi

Re: Ranking the Star Wars Films

1. The Empire Strikes Back 10/10- Masterpiece in every way, characters all become deeper and the stakes and danger are raised but keeps the fun and fantastic pace of the original, best cinematography and most epic of them all

2. A New Hope 10/10- Almost tied with ESB, perfect adventure film, does a great job of setting up the story and characters, innovation and creativity in every scene

3. The Force Awakens 10/10- Somehow manages to bring back to magic of the original films, fun and complex characters, great use of special effects and action

4. The Return of the Jedi 8/10- Very disappointing compared to the first two, Han and Leia become bland side characters, mediocre dialogue and less exciting, Luke and Vader are still great though, good ending to the trilogy

5. The Phantom Menace 7/10- Obviously very flawed but still way more fun than the next two, iconic moments/characters like pod racing and Darth Maul

6. Rogue One 7/10- Boring and Bland characters, tries too hard to be serious and isn't fun until the end, Last Battle and Vader Scenes are awesome though

7. Revenge of the Sith 6/10- Complete overkill in every way, CGI is everywhere and by the 8th lightsaber battle it totally loses its magic, Last 20 minutes saves it from being the worst

8. Attack of the Clones 5/0- Not much redeemable, barely progresses the story, tons of CGI, Unbelieveably bad dialogue

Re: Ranking the Star Wars Films

I'll try on a whim...best to worst

Empire Strikes Back
A New Hope
The Force Awakens
Rogue One
Return of the Jedi
Revenge of the Sith
Attack of the Clones
The Phantom Menace

I occasionally put Sith above Jedi, but the fight between Vader and Luke always makes me second guess that move. I'm really pleased with the recent films, even if they tread over similar themes, they do it well enough to keep it fresh.

The original and new star wars movies are glorified kids movies the prequels are Shakespearean epics and among this century's greatest achievements. Anyone who doesn't recognize this is a tasteless idiot.
