Camp X-Ray : So many things wrong!!

So many things wrong!!

I spent 2.5 years in gtmo while in the army working in the detention camps. They messed so many things up about the camps. I wonder who their military advisor was because they clearly were not down there. Yelling through the whole movie about what was wrong in this film.

Re: So many things wrong!!

I had a laugh at the scene where she says "Attention on deck" when the Colonel walks in the room. They don't have decks in the army. lol

Re: So many things wrong!!

You are correct there are no decks in the army but 1 thing you didn't realize is it's a Naval Base and so because of that they would say attention on deck in most instances.

I stand corrected.

Re: So many things wrong!!

Could you point out some specific flaws?

Re: So many things wrong!!

I find that hard to believe, I would have thought talking about that would be grounds for arrest or something cause they want to keep things under wrap.

Re: So many things wrong!!

There are certain things that would be considered an OPSEC violation but for what they needed to do the movie there's enough public info to get it right. The media is there quite a bit filming, they also did a special on natgeo about gtmo showing things I would think might be a violation of OPSEC but they were allowed.

Re: So many things wrong!!

So on a scale of one to ten where would the stuff that is in the movie to be the most truthful and accurate? If you are allowed to answer that.

Re: So many things wrong!!

That's a hard question to answer just because there were things that were messed up. Movie overall maybe a 3 on accuracy on how things really are there. But there were a lot of parts that were partially accurate, for example one of the first scenes where they do an extraction on a detainee. The only thing that was correct was the fact that we do extractions, everything else as far as how we do them and the gear they were wearing was all wrong.

Re: So many things wrong!!

Did you feel bad for the (I hate calling them this word) detainees?

Re: So many things wrong!!

No only because they weren't very nice to us there. Throwing feces and other bodily fluids on me. All they do is talk *beep* to you all day. You get desensitized to a lot of different things. I can't really blame them for the things they do because if it was reverse I would do the same prolly (other than the feces throwing). A lot of the detainees referred to me as leewanei.

Re: So many things wrong!!

I think it is terrible what is being done to them.

Re: So many things wrong!!

What you think is a result of what you areignorant.

99.9% of the scum in Gtmo are there because they are guilty.

if they weren't there they would be perpetrating more cowardly attacks like the one in France last weekend.

If we accidentally detain, torture or kill one that isn't guilty, TFBad. Justice is blind, it's not perfect.

Even the whining, mistaken and mistreated are guilty in all probability.

Take a lesson from the socialist/pacifist country of FranceEven they have woken up to the threat.

Re: So many things wrong!!

I wonder what you would be saying or doing if you were taken in and tortured till the point that you just say "I did it all" so that they can stop hurting you then you are permanently labeled as a guilty person even though you only did it to end the suffering.

Re: So many things wrong!!

I wonder what you would be saying or doing if you were taken in and tortured till the point that you just say "I did it all"

The US doesn't employ tactics severe enough to get me to admit guiltregardless, if i found my self in a US prison, i would wonder why i was in the wrong place at the wrong time and was detained in the first place.

Ask yourself a questionwhat happens in a much more lax system (take France for example), where virtually no one was suspected or detained and 99 scumbags remain on the street along with that one guy who might have been truly innocent? Of course it's total speculationjust like your assumption that "maybe" some of these detainees are actually innocent.

Re: So many things wrong!!

You should be asking is it really worth losing your humanity to get the truth? Cause I say no. The witch hunt in Salem was wrong and look what happen? The inquisition was wrong look what happened. The Nazi, Russians, OH if one person from the Jones town lived and he is charged with murder cause he was a part of the cult that killed thousands of innocent (gullible yes) people who followed and believed in the wrong man. Should we charge the women in FLDS because they allowed their daughters to be raped and by older men? Should Patty Hearst be punished because she ran with the gang that kidnapped her, raped her and forced her to rob banks?

Re: So many things wrong!!

Ok, here is what we know at this stage:

1 english is your second (or third) language
2 you seem like a very nice person with misguided priorities
3 nothing you said made any sense to meI'm sorry, i even read it twice.
4 is losing your humanity worse than losing your life, or the lives of loved ones because you are a serial pacifist??

Re: So many things wrong!!

I voted for senators, Congressmen, and Presidents and so on. Some were for human execution, in my book I am guilty of murder which seems to go against the "Thou shalt not kill" commandment. For a country that is suppose to be a Christian country.

Re: So many things wrong!!

In the Bible, a better transition is murder.
Another example of this distinction is the military uses the phrase "KIA" for KILED in action in stead of murder. Or, if a cop shoots a man firing at him, it is reported that the cop killed himnot murdered.

Re: So many things wrong!!

The grammar used by red_rackham_77 is better than many people born and raised in America, so you can't assume English is their "second (or third) language".

Please, please, please, if English was your first language then you should know to capitalize English.

Yes, many people do believe in dying, if necessary, to protect their humanity. It is what a true soldier does.

As I indicated elsewhere, careless regard of life can ignite the enemy against you and that can cause the loss of your life or the life of loved ones.

Re: So many things wrong!!

Totally agree with you, I think English used by rackman_77 was adecuate. Some people when they don't agree with what they are reading they start 'language shaming'. Language bullies: those who like to point out people's mistakes to embarrass and humiliate them. People come from all backgrounds and level of education, they deserve at least a modicum of respect.

Re: So many things wrong!!

Yes, some people, when they have no relevant response, attack with something irrelevant. I sometimes point out that they obviously don't have something relevant to say and therefore their response has no relevant value.

Re: So many things wrong!!

We should not allow people in the military that think "If we accidentally detain, torture or kill one that isn't guilty, TFBad", at least not allow them anywhere close to prisoners and our enemies. Since we don't want our enemies to be thinking like that, we should not.

Re: So many things wrong!!

This goes against everything this country is supposed to stand for

Re: So many things wrong!!

Question.
I'm an ex-soldier myself. I was an 11 Charlie. But I got out after doing my 8 a few years before the war on terror started.

It gets on my nerves too when screen-writers and film production teams get the details wrong. Obviously, I don't know anything about Gitmo but the little details like K Stewart having her hands in her pockets got on my nerves.

But I pushed that out of my head because I got interested in the story aspect. If I just look at it as a prison movie where a guard gradually gets on intimate terms personally with a prisoner, it is an interesting study.

Anyway, my question

You said they weren't very nice to you and the other soldiers in your unit. But I note you also add that you can't really blame them and that you would probably react similarly in their situation.

So, yeah, I can understand if all of them were always shy to you guys you'd never have any meaningful interaction with them. But out of curiosity, can you imagine what it might have been like if you were in PFC Cole's situation and one of the detainees did gradually try to get to talking with you and seemed honestly like he was interested in knowing you?

If that had happened, do you think that would have affected you mentally at all? I have a lot of respect for military personnel. I think you would always perform your duty the way you ought to. But would it affect you inside, do you think?

I know it would me. Jesus, we had a guy in our battalion- one of the cooks- got drunk and punched a Lt Col. three or four times. He wound up in a cell in the MP station and all the platoons in the company had to give up a soldier to guard his ass so he didn't self-harm or whatever.

You know? I knew the guy. He served me chow in the mess hall. I felt sorry for him. And it was easy to see he knew he had really screwed up and he was going to Mannheim and I hated that detail. I did my job. I stood there and watched him and listened to him talk. But that was one of the most unpleasant tasks I ever had to perform in the Army.

How would your time at Gitmo have been different if something like this had happened?

Do you think PFC Cole's actions compromised her to the point where she was actually no longer effective? I mean, on the one hand, it's an easy answer because she seems to have broken protocol and it's easy to see that her intimacy is going to make her hesitate or maybe overlook behavior she should be reporting.

But on the other hand, if she increased the mental well-being of the detainee through this interaction and as a result he caused less trouble would you consider this to be a benefit or would the breach in operating procedures outweigh this?

I address this to you because you've been there and you know.

There's a lot of angry people commenting on this particular board who probably haven't even served at all so their comments, while expected, aren't particularly enlightening.

I'd appreciate your thoughts on this.

Re: So many things wrong!!

You spent two years being a dick to those folk. Nice.

Re: So many things wrong!!

Yeah pretty much!! Well I was dick my first year. That's why a lot of them called me leewanay. But my second year not as big of a dick lol. But thanks for noticing

Re: So many things wrong!!

leewaney is a general word for paranoid/dickhead/stupid in Pashto (national language of Afghanistan). Its my language too.

Re: So many things wrong!!

I hear ya I don't really know the language but that's what the guy that called me it said it meant.

Re: So many things wrong!!

you're either a *beep* moron or you weren't even there.

Plot hole - Aspect of a film that is misunderstood or missed while using your smart phone.

Re: So many things wrong!!

Clearly your the *beep* moron because you don't even know me. So how are you going to tell me where I've been
