There's nothing to forgive him for. Pete Seeger was and still is a devoted Communist. He made Pro-Stalin songs throughout the forties and later openly supported the North Vietnamese during the Vietnam War.

PS was a member of the communist party for a few years, that is quite true. But he moved away from it by the mid fifties but continued to be a socialist, which is not the same thing.

I think it is terribly difficult to judge a person's statements, convictions, or stance in any other era but the one you're currently wading through. And look, even than it's probably terribly unwise. You're inviting trouble, opening a door for you to be 'judged' in like manner. The admonition to 'judge not lest ye be judged,' certainly doesn't negate the arrest and conviction of someone we suspect guilty of violating a civil lawbut who amongst us would deem themselves sufficient to judge another one's motive, or hidden intent, providing they indeed had one. Risky business, so I dismiss as rubbish the negative comments rega238rding Mr. Ives. First, many of you did not come of age during the great worldwide depression of the 1930's (when capitalism was seriously being questioned). And secondly, God in his infinite wisdom surely does not judge capriciously (as do Democrats and Republicans when judging each other) pretty sure He goes a bit deeper. My God does, and prayerfully yours does too. If not, I'd go shopping for a new and improved deity.

None of you have mentioned that Burl named Pete only AFTER Seeger had been "outed" and named by previous witnesses in front of HUAC!

Pete wasn't exactly reticent about being a communist.

It should also be noted that Pete Seeger played as a backup musician for Burl Ives on his "Return Of The Wayfaring Stranger" album in 1959. Also shortly before Ives passed away in 1995 he and Pete Seeger did a reunion concert together.

If the great 1c84Pete Seeger held no animosity towards his friend Burl Ives for the unfortunate situation McCarthy's witch hunt put him in during this dark period in our nation's history, then I don't see why others would.
