Horror : Thoughts on found footage horror films

Thoughts on found footage horror films

Do you think that found footage horror films will last much longer?
Any thoughts on the sub-genre in general?

Re: Thoughts on found footage horror films

Like any sub-genres, there's been some bad ones, but I've enjoyed the majority of them.

Re: Thoughts on found footage horror films

I'm not a huge fan of FF and I think most of what I've seen is godawful but on the flipside there is some good stuff too and as long as a gem turns up every now and then, found-footage will continue to have a role in horror.

Re: Thoughts on found footage horror films

I've always liked found footage horror flicks but like everything remotely successful with movies a group of industry cünts go overboard with it and ruin it for everyone.

Re: Thoughts on found footage horror films

I don't think it's going to go away anytime soon, too much money to be made on such a low budget, not the biggest fan of the sub-genre but there's still quite a lot of good found footage films out there.

Re: Thoughts on found footage horror films

I like them but there are many bad ones though.

Re: Thoughts on found footage horror films

One positive thing (not always) is that it enables aspiring genre directors to make a cheap film, and have some commercial success. You can virtually make a film on a cell phone - and sell it.

Otherwise, winding down. Found Foot needs a new killer film to maintain generic momentum.

Re: Thoughts on found footage horror films

Well you can make a case that they add realism but that is not what I'm looking for in movies, I am one who likes fantasy plus I like to have at least an idea what is going on and not need to puzzle out everything myself. I'm watching a movie, tell me a story, I'm not the one supposed to make up the story in that case I could just write the story myself.
Yes cheaper to make the problem is that most also look cheap, don't like that shaky and constant POV style either. I like a movie to look a bit more polished. To me it is simply not entertaining. If it needs to be dark and creepy I think it can be better achieved with black and white filming and good old fashioned shadow work.

Re: Thoughts on found footage horror films

Love them for the most part, yeah there are a few that aren't up to par. But I do enjoy them.

American Horror Story Season 6: Donald Trump

Re: Thoughts on found footage horror films

Really underrated subgenre. A lot of great ones. A lot of the scariest movies I've seen are found footage.

CG gore is the worst thing that has ever happened to the horror genre.

Re: Thoughts on found footage horror films

. meh. Cannibal Holocaust is great. The Blair Witch Project is also very good. Beyond those two it is a 💩.

Re: Thoughts on found footage horror films

I think found footage horror will last for the same reason reality TV is still popular: They're cheap to make and turn a profit.

There are some really great found footage movies out there - [REC] and Creep come to mind - but for the most part I don't really like the genre. Two main reasons:

1. Found footage is supposed to increase the realism and sense that the events you're watching actually happened, but mostly I think the format has the opposite effect and I sit there wondering who is holding the camera, why they're still filming, how this footage was discovered and edited together etc. So found footage oddly enough has the unintended effect of making movies less realistic rather than moreso.

2. For every movie that uses the found footage format for a creative or interesting purpose I feel like there are 10 more that are filmed that way solely because it's cheap and lazy, and these films would be better off using a traditional movie style.

My two cents.

Re: Thoughts on found footage horror films

I am not a huge fan. I just watched "I Know You're In There" which is a combination FF & non-FF movie. It was not very good.

American Horror Story is doing this on their current season, and I am a huge fan of the show, but I think they are trying too hard with it and I feel it's about 10 years late.

Re: Thoughts on found footage horror films

I positively ADORE the genre, one of my personal favorites. I love how it truly breaks the fourth wall for viewers in terms of whats real and whats not, making the experience much more immersive, investing and above all scary. You could say I'm obsessed lol. I basically make a point to indiscriminately see any found footage horror movie released in theaters.

Also, as a side note, *beep* you Friday the 13th fanboys for ruining the "found footage Friday the 13th" movie. That would have been awesome and REALLY special/unique for the series as well as the slasher genre in general.

Re: Thoughts on found footage horror films

The worst current horror trend. It marries shaky cam with utter seriousness and often removes important elements like a score and IMO atmosphere. The ad-libbed nature is also annoying as it often makes for filler dialogue. Sinister perfected this sub-genre IMO by reducing the amount of found footage and putting it in a more conventional yet thought out package.

Re: Thoughts on found footage horror films

Yes I think FF films will continue, as many have said they're cheap n easy to make and still have a market.

My thoughts are again unoriginal. There's some gooduns & plenty bad. So many unoriginal plots involving shakycam, running in the dark, gotta keep filming no matter what, screamy dutch angle nonsense. But also a few well crafted, imaginative, solid story n/or acting ones worth a view.

I'm a fan of the genre in genral, both watching the films and the punk ethic of basically anyone being able to make a movie n get it out there, for better or worse.

Some of my faves - a couple are not strictly 'found' so much as faux documentary footage, same spiritual subgenre!

Man Bites Dog
Long Pigs
Thesis
Exhibit A
Cannibal Holocaust
What We Do in the Shadows
Home Movie
Behind the Mask
Threads
The Last Broadcast
Incident at Loch Ness
The Borderlands
& the 'Saven Haven' segment of VHS2

if you stretch FF a bit further...

Session 9
8MM
Strangeland

Re: Thoughts on found footage horror films

I like them, adds realism and intensity if done right. I think they will continue.
Sure, there are some bad ones, but I wouldn't say any more than other sub-genres. There are some really good ones out there, see below...I also included some films I have enjoyed that are more mockumentary but contains elements of FF:

Cannibal Holocaust
REC
Blair Witch Project
The Last Exorcism
Noroi
Paranormal Activity 1
The Visit
Unfriended
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon
Lake Mungo
What We Do in the Shadows

It's not all bad, is it?

Re: Thoughts on found footage horror films

right..so the heightened sense of reality illicits a heightened sense of fear. Which surely must be the key to the blair witch project, 'cause I've never experienced a fear response quite like it, from any other movie.

So we keep looking at FF to repeat the experience. Some get close.

Re: Thoughts on found footage horror films

I've seen some found footage stuff, but overall I'm not a big fan of it. I think the biggest problem is that the directors try to go to far in making the films look like the were filmed by amateurs. In this day in age, even if the story doesn't work, most amateur camera operators can film something with some type of professional style. If they shot more of these found footage films like they shoot shows like The Office or Modern Family then I think I would enjoy them more.

As for their future, I think they will be sticking around. Mainly because they are more affordable for up and coming filmmakers to make. There may not be any big franchises that use the style, but I definitely think we will continue to see small indie found footage horror films.

So you expect professional camera work from people who are running for their lives?

CG gore is the worst thing that has ever happened to the horror genre.

Re: Thoughts on found footage horror films

I recently watched a few that went under the radar ,( I think.)

1. Delivery: The Beast Within- pregnant couple agree to a reality program, but pregnancy is far from normal- wife thinks her fetus wants to be taken over by "Alastor" ,a demon 6/10

2. Exhibit A - an already dysfunctional family disintegrates 8/10

An intellectual carrot ,the mind boggles!
