Oldboy : Movie title

Movie title

Watched the movie but couldn't figure out what the title Oldboy is in reference to.

Re: Movie title

Haven't seen the remake, nor do I plan to, but I was a-wonderin' on this question too. All I can think is it's a reference to the central character's immaturity-- he's an "old boy".

Re: Movie title

He went in as a young man or "boy", then came out 20 years later.. he is now "old".
Boyold doesn't have much of a ring to it.. Oldboy, does.

Re: Movie title

Old boy refers to graduates from a certain school; ie Grenwich Old Boys, and as the captive and his captor were at the same school it is a clue to the identity of each character and their relation.

Re: Movie title

That's true. However, the original's title sequence involves much by way of watch/clock face(s) and the implied passing of time. It probably has multi-meaning.

Re: Movie title

It's probably somewhat lost in translation, as I'm sure the original title wasn't English.

It seems to me the original title was English, but written phonetically in the Korean alphabet (올드보이 , and later back-transliterated into Western alphabet: Oldeuboi).
