Re: Captain America 3

Civil War needs lots of characters in order to work as a story. Having too few characters was their main stumbling block. It's obviously too late to significantly change the script so I doubt Spidey will be anything more than a small role in CW.

Re: Captain America 3

Oh you're right, I did forget all that Alice and Dark Shadows stuff. Yeah, it's one of those things where you ride the trend for as long as it lasts (in his case, the weirdo trend). It's not an opportunity that comes along everyday. It's basically winning the lottery.

Daniel Brühl on the Amanda Knox Case, ‘Captain America’ and Nadal

The German-Spanish actor who made his name in art-house films continues his blockbuster roll this spring with ‘The Face of an Angel’ and ‘Woman in Gold’

March 18, 2015 11:35 a.m. ET

JUST AFTER I ASK Daniel Brühl to spill the beans on “Captain America: Civil War,” the phone cuts out. Minutes later, back on the call, the German-Spanish actor jokes that it’s the powers that be at Marvel Studios. “I am not supposed to say anything,” he says of the film, which comes out next year. “I cannot even talk about the part, really, because I would be too afraid to give something away and then I’ll end up in the Marvel prison and I do not want that.”

If anyone could get a Get Out of Jail Free card, it seems like it would be the in-demand 36-year-old. Since his breakout role in “Good Bye Lenin!,” which won him the 2003 European Film Award for Best Actor, Mr. Brühl has continued to build his reputation for studied and subtle performances in films such as “The Edukators” (2004) and “Inglourious Basterds” (2009). But it was his Golden Globe-nominated turn as Formula One champion Niki Lauda in Ron Howard’s “Rush” (2013) that really opened doors.

Having recently returned to Berlin after three weeks hiking in Patagonia and the Easter Islands with his model girlfriend Felicitas Rombold, Mr. Brühl is geared up for a busy spring that includes promoting “The Face of an Angel,” out March 27 in the U.K. and co-starring Kate Beckinsale and Cara Delevingne, and “Woman in Gold,” out April 10, with Helen Mirren and R 2000 yan Reynolds.

“The Face of an Angel” is loosely based on the Amanda Knox case. Is it hard being involved in a project that people are so familiar with?

I was attracted to the role because I was always attracted by the case. I almost blamed myself for being so curious following it. That film is about finding out the truth, about journalism, about objectivity—and I find that part of the film very interesting. I was surprised to see how committed journalists can become. It is almost more than actors do when they play a part.

You’ve said you like to play characters that are very different from yourself.

A part that is very much like me would not attract me. In “The Face of an Angel,” I am happy to not be in such a dark place as the character. I am not a director...but he is from my world, so I do understand the problems he has.... I understand about failure in this profession and trying hard to make a new project and be successful again, and suffer from the pressure of people wanting you to do certain things you do not want to do.

Are there roles that you look back on fondly?

When I think back, “Good Bye Lenin!” is definitely one of them. I also fell in love with Berlin and it was the reason why I then moved to Berlin. The director became a good friend of mine and we did another film two years ago, which is going to be released pretty soon. It’s called “Me and Kaminski.” Also “Inglourious Basterds,” working with a genius like Quentin [Tarantino].

Speaking of geniuses, what was it like working with Helen Mirren?

I was nervous when I saw her the first time. We had a dinner, I was sitting next to her and I was so troubled because I thought: “Oh god, it has to be an interesting conversation. How should I do it? How should I break the ice?” And then it was so easy. She could not have done it in a sweeter or more elegant way, because she has the talent of taking away the fear and restraints from you.

Are you excited to be involved in “Captain America: Civil War”?

Absolutely. It’s huge for me. From the world I am coming from and the movies I have done, this feels big—megalomania and huge. I think I will be walking around for the first week being amazed, like a little boy, to be in that universe. It is going to be fantastic. It is something new. That is why it is a challenge. But it is something I am very much looking forward to because this is entertainment on the highest level.

You made a name for yourself in art-house films. Do you miss doing those?

It is nice on these big budget films to have the time and the money to do certain things properly. Certain stories need money and a budget to be told appropriately. But that does not mean I will lose interest in small films. I am very committed to art-house stories. That is where I am from, where I started.

You and a friend opened Bar Raval, a tapas bar in Berlin, a few years ago. Any plans to expand?

I would not mind expanding it. I am talking to my partner about opening an equivalent in Barcelona and calling it Bar Karlsberg and offering German food and German music. Why not? We also were thinking of opening a second place in Berlin because we have been quite successful. It is quite a popular place, and it makes us very happy and proud.

What else do you enjoy doing?

I like to travel. I am always back and forth between Barcelona and Berlin, but my girlfriend and I are thinking of moving to New York for a while because I think to stay in another place and get to know different cultures is a very important thing in life. I sometimes enjoy writing. I wrote “A Day In Barcelona.” It is a not a Pulitzer award-winning novel, but it was an intimate little book.

Being on film sets, with all that down time, you must have a lot of pent-up energy. How do you channel that?

I love running and this is something that calms me down. Yoga does not work for me; I am too nervous. But in this profession it is important to have something that slows everything down, so I found out it can be hiking in Chile or running. I like playing tennis; it’s a sport I really like watching as well.

So who’s your favorite player?

Being a Spanish guy, of course I am a fan of Rafal Nadal. He is left handed like me, but there is a bit of a difference.

Re: Captain America 3

I´m really glad Daniel, is part of the film, he is really talented, I´m sure the guy will get along with the cast perfectly! can´t wait to see him doing press with them

Re: Captain America 3

Goodbye, Lenin is one of my favourite films ever!
I know he speaks Spanish too as his mother's Spanish.

Re: Captain America 3

Thanks! I understand most of it, the speaking is my weak point.

I want to watch the movie already, we have to wait a whole year after AoU arggg

Re: Captain America 3

the official synopsis on CA CW:

“Following the events of Age of Ultron, the collective governments of the world pass an act designed to regulate all superhuman activity. This polarizes opinion amongst the Avengers, causing two factions to side with Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) or Captain America (Chris Evans), which causes an epic battle between former allies.”

Just when I want to put my faith that this will be Cap´s film, the very generic synopsis makes it seems it is just as much about IM´s as it is Cap´s.

why didn´t they just called it Civil War, and left Cap3 for another time?

Re: Captain America 3

Isn't that just a summation by the casting agency not an official synopsis? They usually don't release a synopsis officially until after the movie has wrapped.

Casting notice for extras that might reveal some plot points and locations.

Re: Captain America 3

well, they are presenting Black Panther.
I wonder about the south asian casting, but it is good they will include more of the asian ethnicity too.
and I guess college people may be related to the Peter Parker plot.
shouldn´t we get news soon on who will play Peter Parker?

Re: Captain America 3

They're reportedly looking for Parker to be in H.S. and have been auditioning actual teenagers for the role and not late twenty somethings pretending. So I'm not sure how the university and that age range will fit unless one of the characters is playing a professor /instructor/ lecturer - maybe T'Challa.

Re: Captain America 3

Filming starts next week, right? I wonder when the cast is officially all going to be spotted on set.

Re: Captain America 3

I don´t know if filming stars next week bu 5b4 t main production does, actors go in depending on their schedules, it will be hectic through all April, since the main cast has to promote AoU.

Re: Captain America 3

Given that 90% of the cast is in AoU and Chris is signed up for the London and Korean premieres so far, I would say he would probably get an early start on filming. Apparently, an article was released last week that said filming starts April 1st or sooner.

Re: Captain America 3

could be! maybe he is there in Atlanta now

Re: Captain America 3

there's a twitter account called atlanta filming, so maybe they'll have something up soon. they said that rdj and chris were in town earlier this month since it's already in pre production. i think they're going to return for sure right around that filming date.

Re: Captain America 3

Oh, I didn´t saw that! I know the stunt team has been doing things there already, but logically there is also meetings with the main cast during pre production.

Re: Captain America 3

the video will be up soon, but seems like Chris is working now or maybe this is old interview was from AoU set

Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans Set the Stage for a Civil War
BURBANK, Calif. — Apr 23, 2015, 2:24 PM ET
By LINDSEY BAHR AP Film Writer

There's a conflict brewing in "Avengers: Age of Ultron," and it doesn't involve megalomaniac robots. After reaching a peace with their structure and roles on the superhero fighting team, Tony Stark/Iron Man and Steve Rogers/Captain America have begun to clash ideologically.

The stoic Steve, still reeling from revelations of widespread corruption in "The Winter Soldier," is starting to question the precepts he's followed blindly for so long. Tony, meanwhile, is drifting toward the desire for order and control.

"Morality hits Tony, humanity hits Tony. All of a sudden he feels responsible," said Chris Evans, who plays Rogers for the fourth time in the billion dollar Marvel franchise.

"Neither one of them are blindly convicted. It's blurry and that's what makes it great. No one's right, no one's wrong," said Evans in a recent joint interview with Robert Downey Jr., back for a fifth turn as Stark.

"It's going to make it even harder for them to come to an agreement, which I'm really excited about," said Downey.

While the seeds of a fight are scattered throughout "Ultron," the second gathering of the "Avengers" on the big screen out May 1, it's also setting the stage for next year's "Captain America: Civil War." Plot details are sparse, but any casual comics fan knows that "Civil War" is where the "Avengers" fracture, divided down lines set by Tony and Steve.

It's also the only upcoming Marvel film for which Downey and Evans have been confirmed.

"It's like a marriage," said Evans. "We love each other but it's explosive. You're working toward the same goal but you have very different approaches to it."

Added Downey: "I'm really stoked to see when we have more stuff to actually do together besides like act like we're about to have a fight one day."

Off-screen, the dynamic is, of course, a bit more polite. Sitting on a patio at the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, Downey and Evans were calm and casual with each other.

When Evans tried to explain how others on set are more talented and smarter than he is, Downey quickly jumped in to offer some reassurance.

"I have stood toe to toe with some of the greatest folks of all time and if Spencer Tracy is right — you know, hit your mark and tell the truth — nobody that I've worked with does it the way that (Evans does)," said Downey.

"God. I tinkled a little bit," laughed Evans in response.

As with the rest of the "Avengers" actors, Evans is downright deferential in the presence of Downey. He made sure to immediately stress Downey's essential contributions to creating Marvel's Avenger world. In 2008, the success of "Iron Man" laid the foundation for what is now one of the most influential series in the industry.

"None of this would have happened without Downey," said Evans, who went on to compare him to "The Godfather."

"Success has many masters. It's fun taking all the credit, but the only part of it that's true is that I put points on the board for a team that didn't even know it was going to be a team," said Downey.

"Ultron" isn't even in domestic theaters yet, but pre-production is already underway on a summer shoot for "Civil War," with "Winter Soldier" directors Joe and Anthony Russo at the helm. In the big business of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there's no waiting to see how "Ultron" performs before greenlighting future projects.

Both "The Avengers" and "Iron Man 3" made over $1 billion at the global 5b4 box office. And, since Disney came on to produce the films, none have made under $600 million worldwide. With a slate that extends through 2019, the studios are betting hard on the continued appeal and evolution of Marvel's universe.

"Some people say there's going to be superhero exhaustion. But these movies aren't just superhero movies," said Evans. "The superhero involvement is what's going to bring the audiences because of the familiar properties but then you get into the movie and it's not just him and his suit, it's not just me and my shield. It's people having real life discussions and real life conflicts as characters, that's what people are going to relate to."

Downey agreed, but with a provision.

"What will happen is it will change," he said. "I'm just stoked that we get to be still doing this at the point where it's representative of what it is. It kind of drives the industry."

He does! He looks at least five years younger.

dude is looking seriously jacked.

https://twitter.com/captamericafans/status/593240032737173504

i wonder how they'll do infinity wars. they'll have to give him enough down time to stay bulked.

Re: Captain America 3

Luckily, unlike the solo films there are off days - sometimes even a week off - during Avengers filming to rest and try to keep some off the bulk. Maybe by then they'll have learned how to make his suit lighter so he's not sweating lbs a day off in it.

Re: Captain America 3

seems like wherever he goes, someone asks for a pic

Re: Captain America 3

given all the hype for avengers 2 and all the hype for cap3 filming in atlanta, everyone probably knows that's he in town. im not too surprised he's had a few fans ask for pics. he seems cool about it, it doesnt seem like he's getting that much attn tho.

Re: Captain America 3

Why are they even calling it Cap 3 still? It's basically like Avengers 2.5 at this point.

Re: Captain America 3

yes and no!
I think Marvel felt this was the right point to do CW, they have both well liked actors playing the parts the fans want to see "fighting" in CW (IM and CA), and RDJ said it on Letterman when he was asked if he was going to win the fight and he said "well the title of the movie is Captain America: Civil War"
I bet it will represent the confrontation but all from Steve´s POV.

Re: Captain America 3

I hope it so. I'd rather see the movie focus on Steve (and Sam and Bucky). I'm sick of Tony causing problems for everyone. Every movie in which he appears is just him *beep* stuff up and then having to fix what he *beep* up. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Re: Captain America 3

It's basically like Avengers 2.5 at this point.

More like the end of an era coming up: Civil War, Infinity War, Ragnarok - all lead to global wars, the end of a world. It will end all stories and then, reboot!

Re: Captain America 3

I also think they are probably seeing out, like at the restaurant or target, because he is just starting with the shooting, but once he goes into the full hours schedule, I doubt there will too much sighting, unless there is the cast going out.

Re: Captain America 3

yeah, from my understanding it's a closed set and a heavy shoot so we probably won't have too many photos but i could be wrong

Re: Captain America 3

Re: Captain America 3

Great article. Thanks for sharing. I agree with everything the writer said, except....I really LOVED him in Puncture and thought he nailed it.

Re: Captain America 3

Ho yes Puncture was great. I started believing he can be a great actor when I saw it.

Re: Captain America 3

I find it hard to stay level headed about Puncture. I genuinely believe Chris is one of the most talented actors of his generation and people who make you feel emotions at both ends of the spectrum in the course of their work engender quite deep emotions in your 'relationship' with them. So I feel strongly about him as an actor and am immensely fond of him as a person. When I first saw Puncture my wife and I had planned to go out and put the DVD on to watch a bit of it. We ended up watching it all and not going out at all. I loved everything about it and we both sat with tears rolling down our cheeks as the credits came up. Had he been available for a hug he would have been hugged and acquired a tear stained collar.

I enjoyed the article mostly but had a b68 sharp intake of breath at the comments about what I consider to be some of his most successful works. I respect the opinion of anyone who didn't like the film or found fault with Chris's performance. But I would beg to differ. Profoundly!!

Well said. I already knew but I'm sure many others joined you in that belief too!

Re: Captain America 3

I don’t think Puncture is CE’s best performance. It’s uneven. There are moments when he’s amazing, but some line are too stiff and like he’s “acting.”

These are better...

Re: Captain America 3

Breathes in, breathes out... pulls out Ebert review on Puncture to regroup.

http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/puncture-2011

But he does. With a frenzied energy perhaps fueled by crack, he becomes obsessed with the case, risking the firm itself in the process. He's brilliant; that seems clear enough. Time and again, all seems lost, and he pulls it out of the fire. The movie becomes a showdown between his brilliance and his addiction.

That's a problem, in a way. Weiss is played so well by Chris Evans that his character upstages the issues. It seems clear that the health-care system is corrupt, and that health industries will spend unlimited funds to avoid a court defeat in this case. One of the industry's high-priced lawyers is Nathaniel Price (Brett Cullen), who is all confidence and polish, surrounded by mahogany and brass, and tends to refute Weiss by his very presence. But he and the other supporting actors, good as they are, find themselves upstaged by Weiss and by Evans' performance.

It's unfair to complain that Weiss seems over the top. The portrayal seems to be accurate. Weiss died at 32 of a drug overdose, and an online obituary says he achieved wonders "working only a couple of hours a day." Electrifying in the role, Evans reminds me of other great out-of-control druggies played by Al Pacino and Nicolas Cage. A movie like this is a reminder that box-office success can be unfair and limiting to gifted young actors. Evans is famous in great part because of "Captain America: The First Avenger" and "Fantastic Four." They give little hint of his powers. Movies like this can be career-changers.

Yet I read in one review that the "pic might prove too commercially downbeat for Evans' 'Captain America' fans, while purists might prefer a straight-ahead docu approach." I suspect "Puncture" was made for neither "Captain America" fans or purists, and though it's not a complete success, he's always riveting onscreen, and the story is yet another parable about our venal health-care industry.

Re: Captain America 3

I loved the reviews he personally got about Puncture. I was very impressed with the film. When I can't see Chris is a character then I know he is really doing his job. He made me very sympathetic to a fairly unlikeable, a-hole of a guy. Apparently he really did his research on Weiss. It continues for be one of my favorite Chris films.

Re: Captain America 3

Much love to 1c84 Mr. Ebert, but there’s no way Puncture is his best. It’s not bad, but there are other, much better performances, more worthy of such praise.

I really think if Chris was willing to “campaign” during awards season, he would have had some high profile nominations.

That's it. I've written you out of my will. You stood in line to inherit my Smurf keyring and pencil sharpener but you've blown it now!!

No, seriously. There are some things which aren't open to reason like when a performance really touches you so Puncture is still my numero uno although Snowpiercer is generally recognised as a more accomplished film and Chris's performance got high and well deserved praise. I loved Snow Piercer but it's hard to compare films which are so fundamentally different. Puncture was done on a limited budget with a small cast and was pretty much a roll your sleeves up production. Although Snow Piercer was not quite fully mainstream it was still done in a world famous studio (Barrandov) and had big names apart from Chris and it was science fiction as opposed to docu-drama.

I have to be honest with myself and admit that over the years Chris has burrowed into my emotional safe box to the point that he could stand and stare at a wall for an hour and I'd applaud and say that no-one has ever stared at a wall so brilliantly!
