They Came Together : It's SATIRE people!

It's SATIRE people!

If you don't know David Wain and the style of films/shows he creates, you may be looking at this film all wrong. After reading some threads on here, some people are definitely out of the loop. This is very much a parody/satire on romcoms. If you don't know David Wain, check out "Wet Hot American Summer", "Wanderlust", or even "Childrens Hospital" from Adult Swim. They will give you a good idea of what to expect with this film.

Consider this a warning, if anything. I know some people will go into this film expecting just another romcom. Those elements will be there, but stamped with hardcore satire and slapstick. In the trailer alone, characters are pointing out the types of cliche characters they are. They're LITERALLY saying their personalities aloud.

For those who are fans of Wain you excited? I know I am!

Re: It's SATIRE people!

I was more irritated that they basically told us the entire story on the front page sure, you can probably figure from a romcom that they'll get together, break up over something stupid, and get back together in the end, but to put it out there front and center jeez.

Re: This movie is satire the way Salo was a documentary about fascism.

Just another project of friends being friends and having fun. It's going to theaters, but also straight to VOD. It's very low budget and the only reason the bigger names are in there is because of friendship. Everyone wants to make enough money to survive, but I highly doubt money is a main focus with this film. Just friends having fun, continuing to give more to the cult following of Wet Hot American Summer.

Re: It's SATIRE people!

wow its a satire, great. so that's an excuse for being 100 percent unfunny. ?

Re: It's SATIRE people!

Apparently.

Re: It's SATIRE people!

He always gets a great cast.. and I LOVED Childrens Hospital and Role Models. But honestly Wanderlust was bad (to me) and not a huge fan of Wet Hot either. Sadly this movie, I don't know. maybe its the intentional part of the joke, but it feels like they feel they have to explain every single joke in the dialogue which kills the movie for me. Like the basketball scene they have to hammer home the point that "this is what they do in romantic comedies" where I think most people having seen the trailer, and laid down their money would know what they were getting into.

Re: It's SATIRE people!

I loved this movie. I read all of the reviews and they were all bad - but I loved wanderlust and knew what I was getting into. This director has a particular flavor and style in the same way that Wes Anderson does. Everything from a "normal movie" is there but slightly off center. If you don't know what you are getting into, you could be in for a terrible time. This guy does it for me and I was not disappointed. It is AIRPLANE for Rom-Com films.

Loved the Norah Jones Video - groucho nose, gunshot at the end, and most of all Amy Poehler emerging from her "outfit montage" wearing a suit of armor.

Re: It's SATIRE people!

I loved it too! I seriously had 2-3 ugly laugh-crying. The Christopher Meloni scene with the superhero costume on the floor of the bathroom? I had hiccups from the uncontrollable laughter.

"You're watching this movie wrong! If you watched it correctly you would find it hilarious!"

Re: It's SATIRE people!

i really enjoyed this movie. i never heard of it before putting it on and had no clue what to expect. i saw Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler and thought might as well give it a go.
i thought this movie was an intelligent kind of slapstick that i havn't seen since the first not another teen movie before it was played out. if your the kind of person who is tired of seeing the same romcom over and over again with the same story line told a dozen different ways like i am, then you'll enjoy this movie. it takes every cliche and throws them in your face. if you havn't noticed them in every romcom movie you'll notice them after watching this.
there is one huge WTF moment but other then that it's a nice playful enjoyable movie.

Re: It's SATIRE people!

I think you are confusing the word "satire" with "big piles of steaming crapola"in which case you are right. This is a great "Satire".

Re: It's SATIRE people!

It was a pretty good satire. I would get into the movie and then something would happened and I would be that's gross. Then remember this thing isn't meant to be taken seriously. I leave in a senior complex and about 8 or 9 people from there 70 to there 90s watched this movie. I can't believe it no one left in a huff.

Re: It's SATIRE people!

I found it on NETFLIX, and was shocked that a movie with that cast came out last year and I had never heard of it. So I assumed since it was already on Netflix that it was going to suck. I was really wrong. I laughed my ass off through the whole thing. The perfect spoof of romantic comedies. Obviously some straight up "Zucker Bros." style of comedy. Great cast, some classic stuff. I'm not sure why it was not a hit at the box office or even if it ever was in theaters, but it's a really well done comedy. If you can't or DON'T get why it's great, you sense of humor SUCKS. The "Bubby" scene alone was worth watching the whole movie for.

Re: It's SATIRE people!

I could be wrong but my impression is that this isn't straightforward satireit's interested in satirizing satire. It's a spoof of spoof movies.

The result isn't particularly funny or watchable, even if you "get it."

Re: It's SATIRE people!

It's bad satire. Pure and simple. Not all satire is on target. Those responsible for this, they confused bad taste, sophomoric humor with satire.
