Mike Connors, ‘Mannix’ Star, Dies at 91

Mike Connors, best known for playing detective Joe Mannix on 1960s and ’70s show “Mannix,” died Thursday in Tarzana, Calif. He was 91.

He had been diagnosed a week ago with leukemia, according to his son-in-law Mike Condon.

“Mannix” ran for eight seasons from 1968 to 1975 and was the last series from Desilu Productions. Connors won a Golden Globe for his performance as a tough, athletic investigator, who in quintessential detective show style, insisted on doing things his own way.

The handsome square-jawed actor also appeared in early ’60s TV series “Tightrope!” and “Today’s F.B.I.” in the early ’80s. He later played Colonel Hack Peters in Herman Wouk miniseries “War and Remembrance.”

In the 1950s, Connors appeared in the John Wayne film “Island in the Sky” and in Cecil B. DeMille’s “The Ten Commandments.”

Born Kreker J. Ohanian in Fresno, Calif., Connors was of Armenian descent. He played basketball at UCLA where he was nicknamed “Touch,” and was credited in his first few films as Touch Connors.

Connors is survived by his wife Mary Lou, daughter Dena and granddaughter Cooper.

. . .and John Hurt.

Lately it comes in dozens.

Really liked Mannix as a kid. At least he made it to 91!

Pffft, my suspension of disbelief has higher standards than that.

May he rest in peace condolences to his family and friends. I remember him in Mannix when I was a child. Thanks for sharing your talent with us

Re: RIP: 1925-2017 Age: 91

Saturday was the night we'd get to stay up to watch "Mannix". Good memories.

Wow...it's funny how some memories get cemented to your brain.

I'm 54 years old, and still remember (like it was yesterday) staying over at my Grandma's one weekend back in the early 1970's and watching an episode of Mannix.

At the end of the episode, she dreamily cooed, "Anything for you Mannix"...like she had a crush on him or something.

It was just weird to hear my Gramma say something like that, and funny as well. I suppose that's why I haven't forgotten it!!!

RIP Mike. Say Hello to my Gramma in heaven!!! Her name's Rose, and I'm sure she'll be happy to see you!!

Re: RIP: 1925-2017 Age: 91

Junior Mints , Would your Grand Mother have been the same age as Mannix by 10 yrs + or -?

She was way older!! Born in 1909 I think. She was behaving like a cougar!!

Re: RIP: 1925-2017 Age: 91

May he rest in peace.

Re: RIP: 1925-2017 Age: 91

RIP. I've always loved his Mannix and this loss hurts to the core.

Why ain't you at the garden party you heathen?

Re: RIP: 1925-2017 Age: 91

Very saddened by this, but happy at the same time. Mike Connors had a long, full life and gave us all a tremendous body of outstanding work. "Mannix" will be a joy to watch forever.

Mr. Connors, you will always be appreciated, and thank you!!

Loved Mike Connors and I always have Mannix DVD's on me. I tend to bring them to work to watch on downtime and I have there here in my Condo.

I don't go a week with out looking at him in action mode. So for me this is a major death. Yet he is 91 and I think after 90. Mike Connors should be celebrated. At least he went quick. Now I imagine a 30 something Mike Connors in Heaven telling stories and cracking jokes on his time on earth and Gail Fisher-Peggy is pouring the coffee.

And let's add to that engaging scene one of Mike's best friends: Ross Bagdasarian, better known as David Seville. He and Mike never forgot their Armenian heritage. 😃

What do you think this is, a signature? It's a way of life!

All the good ones are leaving us . . . but then again, we had Mannix for a long time. Lo 111c ved him!! RIP~

RIP

Re: RIP: 1925-2017 Age: 91

Watching Mannix now. Very eerie. One day he was alive, then the next day he's gone. Barbara Hale, Mary Tyler Moore, and now Mike Connors. 2017 is not starting off very well.

Yes I have. That is why I'm posting on this one.

Re: RIP: 1925-2017 Age: 91

Why do posters make a separate thread to say RIP, when there are already RIPS threads --and when no other sentiments are accompanied by a RIP one-word thread? I'm asking 2 questions in one, I suppose.

The next time someone passes away, we will all consider your suggestion for a more efficient presentation of RIP threads. Dork.

Re: RIP: 1925-2017 Age: 91

Yes, I've given that some thought, and I think you are mostly right. I don't think that people are consciously trying to draw attention to their username by creating separate and multiple RIP threads. I think it's that they should want that it be THEM whose RIP is being heard. I suppose, on some level, it is kind of superficial and self-centered and silly. I mean it's not like that specific poster's sentiment is inherently superior or more meaningful or more heartfelt than anybody else's. It's just one other way of being heard. Though I can understand why some people might find this tendency annoying.

RIP to a great TV and film star. He was great in a TV movie favorite of mine, "The Death of Ocean View Park" (1979).

EDIT: Hey, I just remembered. Mike Connors was in those Clorets breath mint commercials from the 1970's and those may well be the first TV commercials I can remember watching as a kid! RIP and thanks for the habit of clean breath!
