Steel Magnolias : So So Acting

So So Acting

I thought the actress that portrayed Shelby did the worst. She was so flat and emotionless...In the original, Shelby's range of emotions really came across, you saw her joy, fear, and frustration. This actress was blah except the hospital scene. She acted like she was attending a get together instead of her wedding. Her mother is Phylicia Rashad, no wonder she got the role.

You really didn't get Annelle's dynamic in this one...they stated her transformation instead of relying on the acting and costuming. In the original you understood when it was her wild time vs. her uber religous side. Not too much depth with Annelle.

Queen did much better and Alfrie, in certain spots did amazing...In others it felt like they were focused too much on remembering the script vs. really letting their emotions through.

Good effort, but there are many actual talented black actresses that could have done a much better job at Shelby. It just felt like they tried too hard instead of really acting...Nothing compares to the original.

Re: So So Acting

When I read who her mother was, then it was obvious how she got the role. I wanted to believe her as Shelby but it was hard, she was so flat. She just didn't have the sweetness and innocence of Shelby. I also didn't see much chemistry with Queen Latifah, the two didn't come off as mother and daughter. The scene where she was having an attack came off as flat too, just a flat performance all around.

Annelle made me forget the part completely, a very poor performance there too. I really wanted to like this version, something different, but the whole thing was too rushed and too much miscasting.

It happened in Salem....USA

I didn't like the actress who played Truvy...I know im comparing her to Dolly but she just didn't seem to deliver the lines right IMO...
