Johnny Cash : Johnny Cash The Actor

Johnny Cash The Actor

I recently saw the Little House on the Prairie episode that included Johnny Cash as a guest star. After watching it I couldn't help but wonder why Cash didn't do anymore acting than he did. He did a fantastic job on this episode. Does anybody know if maybe he didn't enjoy being on camera as an actor that much or maybe just chose to focus on singing only and not venture more into the acting craft?

Re: Johnny Cash The Actor

From all I've read, he really enjoyed acting and did it quite a bit considering he was a writer and musician first and foremost. Up until he got sick in the mid 90's he was constantly on tour, in the studio, or writing new music which didn't leave a lot of spare time for acting.

"I don't want Fop! I'm a Dapper Dan man!"

Re: Johnny Cash The Actor

You should try to find a copy of his version of Davy Crockett, from the 80's it's from the Disney Channel, he plays Davy as a congressman, and someoneelse plays him as a young man, it's a good telling of the life of Crockett, and a good "re-make" of the Fess Parker original. Cash is awesome!

Thanks for the tip.

Re: Johnny Cash The Actor

He was brilliant in Columbo.

Re: Johnny Cash The Actor

I will tell you how great an actor Johnny Cash is, he did a made for tv movie probably a couple I only saw The Pride of Jesse Hallam. He was great. The movie wasn't, but Johnny kept it from being a trite stupid tv movie and actually something interesting to watch. Oh yeah, I forget the old guy's name in the movie, but he was really good too.

If you love, Cheezits and are 100% proud of it, copy this as your signature.

Re: Johnny Cash The Actor

His long time guitarist after Luther Perkins died, Bob Wootton, also played as John's stand-in for film and TV, in addition to being his bodyguard!
Bob is also starring in a new project called "Light of Day" so he's still working as both a musician and actor.

Re: Johnny Cash The Actor

According to one biography I read, Johnny was a little uncomfortable acting but enjoyed it very much. I think he has one of the stronger screen presences of his and later generation among the "musicians-turned-actors" types. Unlike some people (Sinatra comes to mind or LL Cool J as a very different example), Johnny wasn't so successful as an actor that he would be remembered solely for it.

Re: Johnny Cash The Actor

He was in a few episodes of Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman. He was great. She named one of her twins after him.

Re: Johnny Cash The Actor

Johnny Cash was quite an underrated actor.

If Bon Scott of AC/DC was still alive, he would be a Brony.

Re: Johnny Cash The Actor

Cash understood that acting was a craft, and he understood his own limitations as an actor.

Someone once said he didn't like all the waiting around that went on in between shots. He would grow restless on the set and didn't really enjoy it.

Probably the best thing I remember seeing him in was A Gunfight that he did in 1970 with Kirk Douglas. It's a fine Western that I'd enjoy seeing again. It's a shame this movie has never been released on DVD (to my knowledge), or better yet on Blu-Ray.
