Carl Betz : Veronica Lake hated Carl Betz!

Veronica Lake hated Carl Betz!

Try reading Veronica's autobiography sometime. She said many unkind things about Carl. That he was a conceded pretty boy who used to admire himself in the mirror and so on.

Re: Veronica Lake hated Carl Betz!

The word is spelt "conceited."

And even if he was a pretty boy, he did make for a believable husband for Donna Reed. His TV children (Paul Petersen, Shelley Fabares) at least looked like they were all from the same gene pool (unlike most TV shows and movies of late).

Re: Veronica Lake hated Carl Betz!

Listen, if i looked like a young Carl Betz, i reckon i'd be looking at myself more! - lol

Even larks and katydids are, supposed by some, to dream

Re: Veronica Lake hated Carl Betz!

Agree!

Re: Veronica Lake hated Carl Betz!

Since you're into correcting people, you might want to know that the word isn't "spelt", it's "spelled."

Re: Veronica Lake hated Carl Betz!

"Spelled" and "spelt" have both been commonly used in English for centuries as the past tense of "to spell". "Spelled" became the preferred form in American English during the 20th century. Perhaps the commenter learned (learnt) English outside the U.S.?

Re: Veronica Lake hated Carl Betz!

As much as I liked Veronica, she was a major train wreck before, during and after her autobiography. Read some of the bios on the web about her and they point out that she had periods of paranoia, delusions, etc. - likely a result of her ongoing alcoholism. Add to that the likelyhood that she was a bitter person by now and may have come from a place of retaliation when she commented on Carl.
In other words, she really had no room to talk about others & if she'd spent more time soul-searching, she might have found a way to recover and move on to a much happier life. There may have been some element of truth to what she said about Carl, as most actors seem to have some level of narcissm, but perhaps she might have focused more on why she had the nickname "The Bitch" given to her by several co-workers who worked with her and "deserved the title"....LOL

Re: Veronica Lake vs. Carl Betz!

That's sad if Veronica Lake feuded with Carl Betz. They both worked in Hollywood at a time when actresses and actors had to prove themselves with talent, graciousness and great looks.

Both typecast into her or his pin-up qualities, Carl was able to improve his talents and to develop his skills at drama and comedy on both large and small screens. Veronica, no doubt, was able to draw in the audiences with her promising talent and glamour.

If she weren't able to see a difference beyond proving oneself to improving her character, that alone is tragic. But to feud with Carl does show a narcissist side if that's the actual case.

Also tragic that neither survived her or his fifties, Veronica at 50, Carl at 56. They shared a similar life span, but their acting careers took on differing dimensions. Wish they could have gotten along better than they evidently did or didn't.

Re: Veronica Lake vs. Carl Betz!

Supposedly, they got along well enough (later) to go out to bars together, where she probably drank him under the table.

Re: Veronica Lake hated Carl Betz!

Most actors are not like their characters. take Bill Cosby for instance and there's plenty more.

The easiest thing i have ever had to do was give my heart.

Re: Veronica Lake hated Carl Betz!

I'd take Lake's opinion of Carl Betz with a large grain of salt. I read her autobiography and she had very few kind words for any of her fellow actors. I think the only decent working relationship she had with anyone was with Alan Ladd and that's because they barely spoke. I've always thought Lake was one of the better actresses of the era and should have had a longer career, but I think her issues and inability to get along with many people wrecked her career.

Re: Veronica Lake hated Carl Betz!

I wouldn't give this much weight. Read interviews with Paul Peterson, Betz's TV son, and you'll see how Peterson felt about his TV dad, a lifelong friend with whom he and co-star Shelley Fabares had lunch with every month until Betz's death. Peterson, who seems like a very down-to-earth guy, even wanted to name his son after Betz, who wouldn't hear of it because he felt that Peterson's real life father would be hurt by the gesture.
