Carl Betz : Hardly any threads here!!

Hardly any threads here!!

I'm shocked to see so little discussion about Carl Betz, one of the greatest TV dads ever!

Besdies his great run as Dr. Alex Stone on The Donna Reed Show, I also liked him in Judd for the Defense when I was a little kid.

Re: Hardly any threads here!!

I agree. Maybe THE best dad in classic TV.

Re: Hardly any threads here!!

It said in his bio he was voted #16 greatest TV dad. I wonder who #1 was. Robert Young? Ozzie Nelson? I would have wanted Danny Thomas!

Re: Hardly any threads here!!

#1 was probably Lorne Greene....LOL
Seriously, it does make you wonder: Hugh Beaumont, Andy Griffith, Bill Cosby (if someone says it was him, I'll scream...I found that whole family annoying...LOL).
You also had rascally dads like Redd Foxx, unconventional "dads" or father figures like John Forsythe (Bachelor Father)and Brian Keith (Family Affair), Fred McMurray, Chuck Connors (The Rifleman)...the list is endless.

Danny Thomas should certainly be in the very top section - I loved that show.

Re: Hardly any threads here!!

I happened to catch a segment of "Spinout" with Elvis yesterday and was bemused to see that Carl was in it, playing the father of none other than
Shelley Fabares. Hows that for some trivia!
I agree with you, he was wonderful on the Donna Reed Show and also did a great jobe on Judd For The Defense, winning an Emmy for his part.

Re: Hardly any threads here!

Carl Betz was a great actor in film and on television, from his supporting roles to his starring roles on "The Donna Reed Show" and "Judd for the Defense."

Very tragic that he passed at age 56. But he also leaves many fine performances with his mature approach to developing fine characters and his dedicated devotion to acting.

Film and television are better places because of Carl and his great work. Many fans miss him.

Re: Hardly any threads here!

Agree, Carl's great at playing the solid, dependable, providing type, and also good at trowing in a shady character every now and again. He was great all the way around.

Re: Hardly any threads here!

A very underrated actor. Made his work look easy. My favorite TV dad, without peer. An extremely handsome man with a fine voice and a very likeable personna about him. And he deservedly won an Emmy for JUDD FOR THE DEFENSE

Even larks and katydids are, supposed by some, to dream

Re: Hardly any threads here!!

Just finished watching Carl in an old Night Gallery. He was great in it! At times, he reminded me a bit of a younger Tommy Lee Jones.

Such a huge loss, dying of cancer at age 56. It seems like he worked right up to his death, too. Who knows where his career might have taken him from the 80's onward?

Re: Hardly any threads here!!
