TSPDT has updated

Just in time for the board closure and no time to talk about it! Oh well. I don't have time right now either, headed out the door soon but here it is for those interested -

Surprised no PTA film from the current decade made it.

Re: TSPDT has updated

Huh, I've never kept up with this list, but I know it's a big deal to some. I'll look it over, I'm sure there are a lot of movies I haven't seen on there.

Re: TSPDT has updated

It interests me less than it did when I first became aware of it - 7 years ago or so? In part that's because I've seen a pretty large chunk of it, and most of the films that I haven't seen - including those that seem to jump in and out of it from year to year - are ones that were at least on my radar, so there's nothing particularly novel about it. But the Film Noir list - originally a "250 Quintessential Noir Films" list and now a (still unfinished) 1000 noir list - has really guided me, and in the last few years that list has been joined by plenty of others - 366 Weird Movies, top lists of Iranian and Korean films, etc - on other sites that have stoked my interests in these areas. For me the value is less confirmation - oh, look at all these films that other people say are great and that I'm likely to agree with - and more informational, finding out about stuff that wasn't on my radar. And because of the familiarity I have with most of the stuff on the TSPDT list it's no longer as valuable, and those more specialized lists which more often contain films I've never heard of and can't easily tract down, are more up my street. But we all start somewhere.

Re: TSPDT has updated

Damn dude cool to see I'm not the only looking through the 366 Weird Movies list. I'll get baked and then start going through the list. This list is how I found The Cremator, an all time fav of mine.

Have you seen Rubin & Ed (1991)? I can't find it anywhere online.

Re: TSPDT has updated

I still consider this a very good reference, albeit one that relies heavily on the Sight & Sound polls (which is another good one, though it only takes place every ten years).

I have seen far fewer movies than you (though I have only rated those I can remember well enough since becoming an adult), and that means that there is still plenty on this list for me to make use of (though I am not interested in everything there).

I continue to see films by the "master filmmakers" that I have missed (and even revisit a few from my growing collection), and I enjoy the expanded 21st century list probably as much (have probably seen more on this list than the top 1000).

I loved westerns and then noir, growing up, and even wrote a treatment in my late 20's for an arthouse noir set in San Francisco that also involved eroticism and dance, but I am less interested in becoming a historian of certain genres, and more interested in the art of cinematic narrative in all of its guises, as well as how it continues to be informed and enhanced by different cultures and styles throughout the world.

I try to see the most talked about films that are interesting to me (and TSPDT helps a lot, here), and spend a fair amount of time trying to discover films that escape much publicity (local film festivals, and art venues have been the best resource, here), and while I have seen more than 80 films in particular years, usually around 40 (of my choices) are enough for me, given that I pick through what's out there to start with, and try to reserve time for what calls out to me the most.

Have to say I was very disappointed with La La Land,* overall, though I credit the director for being more ambitious (I thought Whiplash was more fully realised, if not also overrated somewhat). The most impressive film I have sen recently is probably Victoria, which was shot in one take, and continued to morph throughout, transforming each time the film started to lag, and often taking unexpected turns.

hope to cross paths on the board than many are migrating to. Cheers, ee

*I do think that Chazelle has talent, and is one of the young up and coming american directors, along with JC Chandor, Jeff Nichols, Derek Cianofrance, and a few others.

Re: TSPDT has updated

Is it updated every year? I don't see any major changes in the top-100, top-200,
Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring made the list, finally!

Re: TSPDT has updated

The moderator of the site talks about some of the changes he made to his formula, and how it affected the list in his introduction.

One of the shifts that occurred is that the top rated newer films made a leap upward.

Re: TSPDT has updated

It's updated every year, yes (or at least it has been that way for the past few years).

The top 200 is usualy relatively steady (the list relies a lot on the Sight and Sound polls and until the next comes out in 2022 it's not that likely for any film to jump so far ahead), however some films have made quite some jumps even in that area. For instance Chimes at Midnight went from 205 to 153. He also changed the formula to be less biased towards new films and as a result The Tree of Life and The Turin Horse made really big leaps for instance (Tree of Life is in the top 250 now I think). Generally the lower something ranks, the bigger jumps it can make. For instance Mysteries of Lisbon made a 750+ leap (from somewhere around 2000 to slightly above 1250) and is now very close to the top 1000. You should totally watch that btw.

Re: TSPDT has updated

The movies at the top receive a lot of votes meaning there's hardly any change from one year to the next.

Excellent movie indeed, maybe this will encourage OldAle to watch it lol.
