The Sergeant : The opening was creepy

The opening was creepy

The black and white footage of hand-to-hand combat between Steiger and the German soldier. The killing was very sexualized…like a SNUFF film. His victim was a cute young man. Steiger gets him in a close body lock and Steiger himself goes limp when the guy let's out his last gasp. It's like they both had sex. Or at least, if Steiger can't *beep* him, he'll kill him all the same. See the obsessive way Steiger chases him down. Very twisted.

Re: The opening was creepy

it fits the agenda of the movie, but that does happen in war, and it is sexual in other war movies, like when the american is knifed in saving private ryan and the german is politely telling him to keep quiet.

Re: The opening was creepy

Yes, that's a homoerotic scene. It shows how, in Sgt. Callen's mind, sex was related to death. In chasing down and strangling the younger enemy soldier, Callen was asserting his dominance over the enemy, both sexual and physical. The violence of it excited and aroused him. He almost seems to tenderly caress the enemy soldier afterwards, and he's overwhelmed by his feelings. A mixture of emotions, relief and remorse. Then, exhausted, he lies back. That scene was a metaphor for sexual consummation. He kept his feelings utterly hidden, even to himself. The only way he could express his love was through violence. He couldn't express it in any other way. The scene actually foreshadowed his own death.
