John Lennon : If you were alive, what were you doing when you found out he died?

If you were alive, what were you doing when you found out he died?

I was ten. I remember the day he died I was living in CFB Shilo which is in Manitoba, Canada.

I was talking to a schoolmate named Amber. I still remember exactly how. I had a swing chain in each hand, the chains were twisted once, not sitting in it, just leaning the upper half of my body thru it talking to her as she swung on the swing beside me.

I was a huge Beatles fan, altho they were before my time, my dad had gotten me the Abbey Road 8 track when I was six.

RiP John.

Thanks for the reply. I realize not everyone appreciated his music. Take care.

Re: If you were alive, what were you doing when you found out he died?

I wasn't alive then, but my mom told me she was a freshman in high school and she remembers that she was getting ready for school on December 9th and she was listening to the radio and that's when she heard it. She was more of a Paul McCartney fan, but she told me that when she heard what had happened, it was like the world had stopped spinning.

Hey, it's a thingie! A fiendish thingie!

Re: If you were alive, what were you doing when you found out he died?

I wasn't there. I was born ten years after he died. But I can imagine how it would feel. My mom was 30 at the time. She said it was just so sad and shocking.

Re: If you were alive, what were you doing when you found out he died?

I wasn't alive (I was born six years later), but my mom grew up on The Beatles in the 60s and she was 24 when it happened. She says that the fact that she was pregnant and had hormones racing may have made it a bit worse haha, but she was absolutely shocked and cried quite a bit. She was also completely at a loss as to why someone WOULD kill him. She also cried some when George died, too, so maybe it wasn't all hormones that were affecting her when John passed.

I was 16 and in the 11th grade. I was saddened and shocked. I just kept asking why? I still ask..."Why?"

Re: If you were alive, what were you doing when you found out he died?

I was 15 years old in grade 10. I was a huge Beatles fan, and still am. I was doing homework in my bedroom when my mother came and told me. I was in shock and couldn't concentrate on my homework. I decided to call a friend of mine who got me into The Beatles a couple of years before. He'd transfered to another school the year before, so I hadn't talked to him in a while. When I told him what had happened, he wouldn't, or didn't want to believe me. He finally turned on his radio and confirmed it for himself.

Re: If you were alive, what were you doing when you found out he died?

I was in 8th grade, I recall the shock on my grandma's face, when my mom told her the next morning. My classmates and I spoke a little about it at school. Marvin Gaye's death by his father really stunned us, since my mom knew him back in the day.

Re: If you were alive, what were you doing when you found out he died?

I'm in the UK so it happened during the night for us.

My sister ran upstairs and woke me as soon as she turned the TV on and there was nothing but John on the news and radio. I sat bolt upright and reached for the radio and realised she was not kidding me on as she knew I was a huge John/Beatles fan.

It was so shocking and upsetting. To this day it's still unreal to think that he was murdered and is not with us anymore.

And now we have the 10th annversay of George's death looming.

Re: If you were alive, what were you doing when you found out he died?

I have to admit, though this is slightly embarrassing as a dude, that I cried and cried when George died in 2001. I was too young in 1980 when John died -- though I grew up "feeling" it in the pop culture (I still remember the heated talk/rumors of a possible Beatles reunion with Julian singing John's parts in 1985 at Live Aid). George's death blended with 911 for me (as a Yank) and I have this great sadness about the love and peace that George represented being gone with him right before a time of great loss and sadness and violence (it was amazing how many people knew victims of 911 and all that came after) -- and the Beatles gone with George and John.

It breaks my heart to see pics of Julian now as I keep thinking how Julian looks exactly how John would have looked as he aged. Imagine how John would be in his seventies...and I think he would have been able to work on/repair his relationship with Julian (and of course kept up his fatherly devotion to Sean).

Ditto

Don't trust reality. After all, it's only a collective hunch.

Re: If you were alive, what were you doing when you found out he died?

Yep. Was at the dining room table, working on homework, and my father was watching Monday Night Football in the other room.

Howard Cosell first said only that he'd been shot, and to this day I'm very sorry that my first thought - even with being a *huge* Beatles fan since at least 4 yrs old - was, "what was John Lennon doing that he ended up getting himself shot?"

Re: If you were alive, what were you doing when you found out he died?

I was sleeping the night he died. I usually stayed up to watch Soap, but it's wasn't on, football was, so I went to bed.

The next morning, I was awakened to the news report that he had died the night before. i listened to the news, then got up, got ready and headed to work. It usually took me 30 to 40 minutes to get ready to face the work day. That day, I was out the door in 10 minutes. I listened to the radio on the way to work and every other song was a John/Beatle song.

At work, they kept the radio station on the rock station all day and they played him and the Beatles songs he sang lead on ALL day long. That was the longest day I ever spent.

That night, CBS ran a special on him, that I stayed up to listen to. My mom asked me why i was still up and i told her he got shot. She watched the special with me (she is a country music fan) and then went home.

I was 26 and I was watching "The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson." I think he was doing his monologue when they scrolled the news across the screen.
I went to bed and listened to a clock radio as the details were told.

I wasn't born until 1989, but my aunt is a HUGE Beatles fan, probably the biggest fan in my family. She was a teenager in the mid 60s when they were really big and that most likely impacted her generation. I never asked what her reaction was upon hearing the news, but I'm sure she cried.

I was 11 and getting ready to go to school, when my dad told me.

I was and still am a huge Beatles fan.

We stood in the middle of our living room
listening to the news on the radio.

I cried all the way to school before I met my mates, who couldn't believe it either.

30 years ago today, RIP John.

I was at work in LA, ironically listening to K-Earth 101, the "oldies" station in LA then and now, when they announced it over the radio.

Re: If you were alive, what were you doing when you found out he died?

I was 15.

I'm in the Netherlands. Due to the time difference the news got to us on December 9th. I heard it at 7 a.m. while preparing for school. It was on the news and the D.J. picked up on it by playing Beatles/Lennon records for the entire hour.

I was a huge Beatles fan and was in total shock.

I rode my bicycle to school and met up with a class mate on the way there. She asked what was wrong and I told her John Lennon had been shot and killed. She didn't really know who he was, which made it even worse.

Terrible day.

I know what you mean. Time passes. Who would have thought that Paul McCartney would ever be 64, (68 now)-- or that John Lennon died at 40 and that was 30 year 238 s ago.

Time passes quickly.

I was 12 years old and I don't remember what I was doing at the time. I think I was getting ready to go to school.

I was 19 and as an amateur artist I was working on an oil painting that night when the radio annoucer came on and said John Lennon had been shot.He said he didnt have any other news as to weather he was alive or dead.

I immediately stopped working and turned on the Tv for more news. Shorty after Howard Cosell came on and confirmed it. I was numbed and just went put on the "plastic Ono Band" album and worked on the painting being sad.

Re: If you were alive, what were you doing when you found out he died?

Such a great topic, I really enjoyed reading these posts.

I wasn't alive yet when he died, but my dad is a huge Beatles fan, and he has told me the story countless times. He was fourteen and cleaning his room up with the radio on. He was sweeping when the DJ broke through and announced John Lennon had been shot. He stopped what he was doing and sat on his bed, he said it felt like losing a close friend, he just couldn't believe it.

Even though his death occurred before I was born, it still saddens me to think he was taken so young. He was such a creative genius, but I also felt like he had a lot of unfinished personal business.

Re: If you were alive, what were you doing when you found out he died?

My dad watched it on tv with parents and bros. Then went to his room to be depressed.

Re: If you were alive, what were you doing when you found out he died?

I was 13 years old, I turned 14 three months later.

I was asleep and my mother had just come to tell me to get up and get ready for school and she told me that John Lennon had died. I was still half asleep and thought she had said Jack Lemmon. I said "Jack Lemmon?" and she told me "No, John Lennon". I then went and saw the report on TV that he had been shot the night before.

This was in the very early days of the 24 hour news network. CNN had just launched 6 months earlier and none of the other 24 hour news networks were around yet. At that time we only had one TV so I hadn't seen anything about it the night before. I learned later that it had been announced the night before on Monday Night Football, but I have never been a football fan so I wasn't watching that.

I have been a Beatles fan since I was about 7. My first real album that wasn't kids music was the Sgt. Pepper album which was released the year I was born. I've owned that since I was 8. I still have that old vinyl record (I also still have all my other vinyl records).

I still have all the newspaper clippings with the stories about John's death that ran in the paper for the next few weeks after he died. I've saved them all these years.

Now 32 years to the day later on December 8th, 2012, we still miss you John, you died too soon. There was still a lot of music you could have given the world had you lived.

It's also hard to believe that I'm now 5 and 1/2 years older than John Lennon was when he died.
