Wow! In The Earth was pretty close to absolutely awful. Plotless and pointless, with no reason to care about what is happening.
Close to torture-porn with the two scientists protagonists, constantly being held captive or drugged and maimed.

Well, I calculated basically it was the guy shaking his head at people of other races or ethnicities not with his race as their "best interest" at heart.
I guess most White actresses aren't "pretty" or "cute."
It is reminiscent of true horror films in the beat and flow and interjections of the sirens/lights, the appearance of human beings lovely ladies with their attitude.

Very trippy, the music really, really reminded me of the sort of music you get in 70's British Sci-fi and horror! The Martin character was such a coward. Reece was amazingly menacing with his botched up stitching and diy surgery 😨

Wheatley seems to have no skills in writing dialogue. If just one of the characters had something interesting to say, it might have been watchable.

Almost! It was one scientist and one guide being terrorised by two nutcases in the woods.
I saw above that you weren't keen on the film which is a shame. I think the plot was fairly straight forward but maybe I don't understand it properly. Anyway here's my take.
I think basically there was an area of the forest which was "different", maybe it was the entity in the stories of the Parnag Fegg or maybe it was unusual vegetation. Zach and Olivia are driven mad by either their isolation or their environment or both and become psychotic and obsessed with contacting and/or appeasing The entity. The ending strongly suggests to me that there was something supernatural at play along with the hallucinogenic nature of the vegetation in that area of the forest.

First of all, thanks for taking the time. And I pretty much agree with your interpretation. But the whole thing was under-written and badly put together imo.
I enjoyed Alex Garland's Annihilation, much more than In The Earth. And literally right now I'm rewatching Tarkovsky's Stalker (Criterion Blu-ray, natch), which almost seems on a similar theme.

You're welcome and wow Tarkovsy's Stalker does seem very similar. Are you a fan of the folk horror genre?
I didn't care much for Annihilation. I'm almost convinced that I missed something, it's one of those films that constantly crops up in lists of great horror that I'm thinking of giving it another go.

Oh it's on Netflix now? Excellent. It's on a local streaming tv app here too. Loved the audio in general. Very trippy. And yes, Reece Shearmith was fantastic. The mad forest man look suits him. 😂

Really dug this one. Lots of cool trippy visuals and a strong sense of pervasive gloom and dread. Plus the foot injury stuff made me wince!
