IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

Considering IMDB must have one of the biggest or *the* biggest amount of boards on the net, to wipe them all out must be up there as one the dumbest internet decisions of all time. It would be like Google removing the search bar!

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

Agreed.

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

I certainly think they'll come to regret it.

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

Nah. They're probably taking less profit from the boards than they're wasting on the servers/maintenance. That's the only reason I can see for them to shut the boards down.

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

Nobody asked you!

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

But does it really require that much to host a bunch of text?

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

I don't see why

Don't give up the fight for truly independent cinema!

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

Yes.

I predict these boards will come back next year or so after they realize how much traffic has gone down.

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

I don't know maybe they are ok with a worst case scenario (100% of the people looking at message board from time to time never ever coming back), it is not hard for them to estimate, if those 250 million unique visitor (and nearly 40% of them from China) figure are true, loosing every messsage board user is maybe irrelevant in term of short term traffic. Depending of the new platform advantage, maybe the traffic will not be down and one they moneytize more.

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

No, I mean people who make a hobby out of upsetting others. Differences of opinion are superb, they make the world go round.

To exemplify this perhaps the exploits of Naeemak who has repeatedly used pornographic profile pictures, posted links to videos of beheadings etc.

Just exactly what IMDb want associated with their brand.

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

You may not have read my edit as I just finished it prior to your post. To be clear there were people on here posting links to pornography and beheadings. It is not about opinions at all. There are people on here whose hobby is simply upsetting other people, that is very different from a diversity of opinions.

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

I concur. They want more control of the ratings. Trolls have been hitting this site hard since day 1.

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

But this doesn't get them more control over the ratings...

If they wanted to change the ratings they would just fake them... they can do that any time they want...

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

"they can do that any time they want..."

And we have used the boards to expose them. No wonder you want these boards gone.

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

You can expose them on Facebook or Twitter easily enough, with a lot more publicity, they haven't shut down the Internet for crying out loud.

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

"You can expose them on Facebook or Twitter easily enough ..."

No you can't and you know it. THIS was the place to expose the lies.

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

The place to expose them was on a board they DIRECTLY CONTROL. Serious or joke?

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

You are a troll that just wants to see the message boards' demise.

Goodbye troll!

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

Bye sonny, won't be seeing you where I'm going (moderated board)

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

Don't let the door hit your ass on your way out of my life, troll

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

As someone who has been here from day one, or August 2002 to be precise (as opposed to "November 2016" which is apparently your tenure), I can tell you that the level of abuse has gone through the roof in the last couple of years, it's not the same as it was at all.

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

Can you understand how this looks from my point of view? A variety of sock puppet accounts and trolls are complaining about the board deletions, and trying to control the narrative so they don't come out the bad guys, i.e. saying it's all about free speech and IMDb trying to stop people saying bad things about movies. Then you appear with an account dated November 2016 carrying the exact same opinions and claim to have been lurking for over 15 years. You can see how your explanation doesn't look even slightly reasonable.

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

"You can see how your explanation doesn't look even slightly reasonable."

Same with yours.

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

I'm finding it quite hard to respect you at the moment

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

You are for the boards demise, so who cares what you think?

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

No I want them to stay. You on the other hand, self-admittedly in your profile, have been deleted before. Yet another troll trying to control the narrative.

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

"Yet another troll trying to control the narrative."

That is you pal. You just tried to the control the narrative just now you hypocrite!

Shameless troll you are.

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

Turns out that you are all in favour of exposees, except when you are the one being exposed.

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

Exposed how?

You are the one arguing FOR the closing of the boards.

Goodbye troll! You will not be missed!

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

Why are you posting with an account from November 2016 if you have been posting from day one.

Sock account or you got your account deleted for trolling?

Post deleted

This message has been deleted.

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

The trolling on here harms their brand, people who see the trolling avoid the site altogether. I imagine it will make them money, hence the decision.

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

What about the INTERNET ARCHIVE thingy? Will they save a part of it at least?

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

Time will tell, Friends Reunited missed the boat though, 4 year head start on facebook and it went down the toilet.

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

I definitely come to IMDB to communicate on movies first and go to the main movie info page second. I prefer Wikipedia over IMDB for movie info. It's more detailed, IMO.

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

Not according to actual data, no.

ESPN probably had more active forums when they decided to axe them in favor social media connected Comments section on articles.

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

LOL

Not even in the top 10,000

Or not at all since it's not self destructing.

So, NO.

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

They might as well just close down now.

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

Not dumb, it's just a rich guy doing what he can because it affects his bottom line or because he doesn't like free speech. He's about to make other people very rich.

I think this is the beginning of the end for Amazon though. Bezos is a kook.

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

The google search bar is useful. The IMDB message boards are not.

I disagree. FG board may be useless, but I've read many interesting things on the individual title boards. And in a week it'll all be gone.

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

If only there was anywere else on the internet to discuss films and ask questions of knowledgable people.

Easily.

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

yeah it probably is.

It was long ago and it was far away,
And it was so much better than it is today....

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

I reported an obnoxious trolls several hours ago, and nothing has been done. The troll's account is two years old, and he is spending all his waking hours on imdb trolling and behaving like a prick.

Others are free to spam the boards for weeks about some Korean crap nobody gives a damn about.

But a few hours ago someone called Jim started posting a message on various boards where he added the link to an archive over all three million posts and the possibility to continue the discussions there. It didn't take long before all his posts were deleted. If his account was deleted too, I don't know.

Col Needham also said it was a problem that the boards were ephemeral, even if there are threads and posts that are several years old on boards with little activity. The solution? Recommending Twitter and Facebook.

Something's not right.

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

Most of the boards are irrelevant though. Other than large blockbusters or movies with a high presence in the top 250, or generalised ones like FG, etc, the individual boards generate very little discussion, or they become inactive following a movie's fall from pop-culture relevancy. Added to this, most of the messages across the site are purged over time, so the discussion is already being lost on an annual basis.

Despite this, nothing is ever really "missed" or mourned for; people just get on with it. And why not? Nothing here is worthy of preservation; it's just people killing time, airing their opinions to an anonymous audience of fellow participants. No one here is rivaling Andrew Sarris or Pauline Kael or Roger Ebert; no one is producing important criticism. It's just graffiti with punctuation (and sometimes not even that).

Message board culture has been dying out for years now; replaced by social media and comment sections that allow users to be "part of the conversation." 12 or 13 years ago I was active on several thriving message boards for movies and music that (for the longest time) were genuine communities, but these have all gone the way of the Dodo; either being closed down by moderators or just becoming the online equivalent of a ghost-town. After a while even the most dedicated participants moved on and no one really missed them. There's the rub.

The same will be true for IMDb.

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

"The same will be true for IMDb. "

Thanks in part to folks like you that do nothing but spread doom and gloom.

Social media is a disease.

Re: IMDB - worst act of sef-destruction in internet history?

These boards (particularly the individual movie/tv/actor boards) made this one of the best sites on the internet. Platform for free and unlimited discussion, which the illuminati hates.
