Philosophy : Poll: Would you feel guilt if you killed in self defense?
Re: Would you feel guilt if you killed in self defense?
Alright, yes. I would think about those people. It would be impossible to forgive the person who tried to turn me into a corpse though.

Right.
I’ve seen Reddit posts by people who claim they had to kill in defense and a lot of the times in situations like what you describe, they don’t feel much of anything. I wonder how much of that is denialism or avoidance, since it’s a traumatic event. Even cops need therapy after killing In the line of duty.

True. Even some troops require counseling if they killed people in combat during their years of service for the emotional distress. Self defense killing that isn’t in the line of duty is bound to cause some form of PTSD for your average civilian, unless they’re a sociopath.

Re: Would you feel guilt if you killed in self defense?
Maybe. I honestly don’t know. I ran into a deer a few years ago with my car and the cops came and shot it dead to put it out of its misery. I felt bad for a bit but I’m not exactly losing sleep
Over it it. Hunters kill things all the time and are okay with it.
Killing a human, though. Yeah. Unless you’re a sociopath, that damned empathy is what gets you thinking about all the lives you’ve harmed by taking the life of your attacker. Cognitively you can reason through why you did it but emotionally, due to empathy, the situation becomes muddled.

Well at least you're not a complete psychopath and there's a glimmer of hope for you.

Re: Would you feel guilt if you killed in self defense?
Why would you have empathy for someone who tried to kill you?
You're either overthinking it or virtue signalling. I know I wouldn't lose sleep over it and I also know I'm not a sociopath.

Re: Would you feel guilt if you killed in self defense?
Because when you kill anyone in self defense, it’s not a one and done thing. You have to defend yourself against legal scrutiny and that forces introspection. You will think about the other parties family because your reasons for defending yourself will likely entail wanting to fight for your life and the things in it you care for like your family. That’s empathy.
Logically I agree. Why would you care. He tried to kill you so you killed him for it. It’s that simple.
The issue is, humans are not logical animals. We think we are but every decision we make is colored in some capacity by emotion. I think you’d feel different if you actually had to kill another human being.

Nah. I see what you're saying, but I wouldn't go there. If for some reason I went there a little bit, it wouldn't last long.

"I think you’d feel different if you actually had to kill another human being."
Agreed.
This is something the news stories never cover.
How the killer in self defense may or may not feel remorse for taking another life.

It's hard to say unless you actually killed in self defence which I never have.

I hope I die before I have to do that.

Re: Would you feel guilt if you killed in self defense?
No argument that it’s justified. If someone tries to hurt you or kill you, you need to take them out first. That it’s justified isn’t the concern. It’s if there’s a cost beyond the immediate. Something more psychological and complex than whether the killing was right.
