Film General : One final plug for FG Reddit

As the clock winds down on our time here at IMDb, I want to invite those who are interested in quality discussion of film to join us on the new Film General subReddit, which so far has been a really encouraging success.

In just two weeks the forum has gotten 244 total subscriptions, and by my count we currently have about 60 FGers who have been actively participating there. So far, because it's a moderated forum, it's been a pretty troll-free experience, and there have been many high-level, quality threads created.

I understand that in many ways IMDb2 seems like the logical place to go. It's very similar to the current IMDb experience, for better or worse. And if that's what you're looking for, I can certainly understand that. But I honestly believe that, for the serious FGers anyway, that the subReddit is an opportunity to actually improve over what we've had for the last several years on IMDb.

To those who are skeptical of the layout and the format, or even of the moderators, or me personally, I ask you to just give it a chance. Yes, it's a bit different than what we're used to, but in some ways I actually think it's an improvement once you get used to it. And whatever downsides it may have, I think they are compensated for by the fact that the board is actually controlled by FGers, and that it's a trolling-free experience. I invite you to check it out. Come browse through the threads that have been created so far, and give it a fair chance.

Below is a list of FGers who have been actively participating there, and who have made it a really great place to discuss film so far. Once IMDb closes down, I really think this is our best option, given how promising it's been in these first 2 weeks because of the contributions of these people, and many more.

Could you walk me through the 'points system'? It seems posters are being awarded points or something.

Reddit has something called "Karma" that you can be awarded when your posts and comments get up-voted. It's designed as a way for worthwhile threads and comments to be given greater exposure. But for our subreddit, we've disabled the down-voting on the main pages, and only left up-voting in place. That way it's not as easy to down-vote unpopular views into oblivion. And for our purposes, the Karma can help people to determine if a user has been around for a while and is credible, kinda like how here on IMDb we know to be skeptical of anyone with a recent "IMDb member since" date.

The idea with up-voting is that it's meant to be a way to draw attention to worthwhile posts. It's not meant to be a simple "agree" or "disagree" but more like, "this is a cool conversation that adds value to the subReddit." I've personally up-voted many comments that I actually disagree with.

Reddit seems like a cool place. I might pop by every now and then if I've seen a film that warrants good discussion.

You all gave up far too easily if you ask me. Creating alternate boards and plugging these the very SECOND that IMDB made their announcement.

All the while, there was our Dan fighting with all his might to save the boards. Getting his petition out there, getting the press involved. If you people had even HALF of his fight and enthusiasm then the boards would not be closing now.

The poster has been banned and the posts removed but this will likely be an ongoing problem. It's much easier to immediately block people on reddit.
