I know some/many Germans care about the heritage of other people but haven't made up their mind on who is okay to accept. Most people do, though, it seems, here in the US and abroad, even in non-Caucasoid nations. I don't think I'm bad because of my heritage, it's something I can't change. You don't have to accept me, but you shouldn't be able to kill me.

The Lon Chaney version is still the best one. 
No other phantom was as ugly or scary as Chaney's phantom. People supposedly fainted in movie theaters during the unmasking scene.
