Sex and Dating : Would you ever do couples counseling?

Would you ever do couples counseling?

Personally, I don't think I ever would. I could see times where it'd make sense - like if you were married or had a kid with the person and you REALLY wanted it to work out. Otherwise, I see it as a waste of time. If you can't figure it out on your own or with advice from family or friends, the relationship should just end. If you have to fundamentally change something within yourself or the other person for things to work out, maybe you just shouldn't be together.

I bring this up because I'm going to a wedding this weekend and I think the couple is doomed to fail. The girl cheated on the guy multiple times and they went to couples counseling to try and save things. They are both in their 20s!! Why do counseling when you could have just cut your losses and tried something new? Maybe someone more compatible?

I just hate seeing people settle and think they can't do any better because they've been with someone X amount of years. It's crazy. Stop trying to force things. Relationships shouldn't have to be hard.

I'm sorry but why would anyone willingly talk to a therapist. Fuck that.

Therapy is amazing. Learn lots of things about yourself, and ways to not get trapped in certain ways of thinking. Great for battling anxiety. Etc etc

Re: Would you ever do couples counseling?

I think that's a bit too harsh. For me at least, of course you can maintain whatever standards you want. But I wouldn't mind if someone was going to therapy because they had childhood trauma or they're getting over a death. Something like that. I just don't like the idea trying to work out fundamental incompatibility through therapy.

Re: Would you ever do couples counseling?

Couples counseling could work if the couple consists of two morons with zero clue on how to have a relationship with another person. If someone hasn't been able to figure that out by the time they reached adulthood, then I guess counseling is required.

Do you know how to?

Re: Would you ever do couples counseling?

Sure. It really isn't hard.

Engage with them. Talk to them, be there for them, help them, etc.

Be open with each other. A relationship can't survive if it's built on mistrust. You have to tell your partner about things you're going through.

Listen to the person. Don't just hear them, but listen to what they're saying. Let them know you understand them. Be empathetic.

Cooperate with them. Flow with them. Find a way to allow both of your rhythms to seamlessly flow together. A relationship is a mighty river. Fighting against the current will only tire you out. Find a way to go with it. But also know when there are rapids or a waterfall coming up and find a way to deal with the issue.

That's all fine but the way you handled you "relationship" with Monicah tells a different story. You went full blown autismo on that one.

A little bit of retconning on your part there, buddy. I was pretty level-headed through it all. Sure, I'd let the inner sociopath out of the cage at a few points, but I wasn't acting like a spastic. Pretty much all of the toxicity was on her side of the playing field.

It is worth mentioning that another key element in having a relationship is the willingness to do all of the shit I said earlier. Basically… being a mature person.

Re: Would you ever do couples counseling?

Wrong. The thing about you was you liked to step over the line… habitually. You were a habitual line-stepper. All I did was provide you with a couple verbal love taps to get you back in line. That's it.

Never did anything toxic at all. Not once. Not me. That's not my game. Ok? /discussion

Take your "whatever" and shove it right up your polluted coochie, you unholy abomination.

No, I'll admit I was pretty toxic at times. Even admitted to it in this thread. But we've worked past it. You up and left me high and dry. I had a few healthy wails in the shower. We're better people now. All's good.

Re: Would you ever do couples counseling?

I'm not singling you out with this, Twiz, but I find it odd the kinds of responses I'm getting. This isn't really anything romantic. It's just common sense. When you enter into a partnership with someone, it has to be mutually beneficial. You can't just give and get nothing back and you can't just take and give nothing back. Really basic stuff.

But because of how self-centered people are, it seems like a massive hurdle that you have to have tons of preparation to get over when it's just a slight bump that you can clear by merely hopping over it. I guess it's the inconvenience of it or whatever. People just can't fathom having to adapt to a new lifestyle I guess.

Re: Would you ever do couples counseling?

Couples counseling is great only if you’re both willing to do it. It provides a medium where you’re able to share your side without things turning into a big fight.

And she probably cheats because the guy’s a pussy or outright ignoring her. Can’t really say that outside of counseling without provoking a negative reaction

Sophie lies.

Re: Would you ever do couples counseling?

If they guy is a pussy and ignoring her, they should break up. Cheating because you aren't getting enough attention and won't be upfront about it/break up is a pussy move imo.

Re: Would you ever do couples counseling?

They’re married? Not that easy to up and leave. Especially if you’re a woman who makes less money than the man. Or make no money at all.

She probably feels trapped. The sick truth is, lots of married women would cheat after a few years together if a guy they like showed them attention. Why? Because they stop connecting with their spouses. Could be work, kids, life in general - people will find a way to feel human. Oftentimes, they do this by having affairs.

Sophie lies.

Re: Would you ever do couples counseling?

That's why I do think its important for women to keep a solid level of financial independence from their husband. Should things go south like that, she would be more free to leave. But you make a good point. When your lives become so intertwined it becomes more difficult to just leave. I can have sympathy for people in that situation. But a couple in their 20s who are not married, don't have kids and don't own a house together? I don't see a reason to disregard your partner and just cheat. There is an easy out.

Re: Would you ever do couples counseling?

She prob has confidence issues. It’s empowering having multiple people into you and extra fun when it’s wrong. That sounds sick but if she has some serious self esteem issues, it probably makes her feel right with herself where typically she wouldn’t feel good.

Otherwise she’d dump him. The relationship isn’t satisfying her so she’d go. But he’s shown he’ll tolerate her… indiscretions. So why wouldn’t she keep doing it? He’s not going anywhere and she gets as much dick as she wants. Win-win.

Re: Would you ever do couples counseling?

I would if I found it needed to be done. We have been together 30 years and have great Commnication. We give each other 5 minutes of no interruption when talking. I think it is really important to not be talking over each other. We also need humor. If we take each other too seriously we get too intense.
