Pets and Animals : Woman killed by her 5 Great Danes

A northwest Iowa woman who was found in a ditch died after being attacked by her five Great Danes, authorities said Wednesday.

A man found the woman in a rural area of Clay County on Monday but couldn't get close to her because of several large dogs, according to KTIV-TV.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office says the man reported what he found and deputies determined the woman was dead. She was identified as Mindy Kiepe, 43, of Rossie.

The state medical examiner said Wednesday that Kiepe died of multiple dog bites. An investigation determined Kiepe's Great Danes caused her death.

Kiepe lived at a farm near where her body was found.

The sheriff's office said the dogs were euthanized.

for the dogs, it was probably a hierarchical conflict. maybe the pack collectively thought they'd need a new alpha, so they had to get rid off the current one, which here was the human. when sth like this happens in the wild, within the social order of a pack of wolves, the pack would attack the alpha as well, but the attacked individual would know how to properly react to those attacks in order to survive it, either by withstanding the attacks and maintaining its status as alpha, or by withdrawing and retreating in time before they'd get killed. here, the woman obviously didn't know how react to those attacks and eventually lost her life due to it.

In 1982, my neighbour in Van Wesenbekestraat was killed by her 150 pound German Shepherd. According to the police, traces of pâté en croûte was found on her vulva, leading the police to conclude that Mrs van der Vart had, well, used the food to make the dog perform oral pleasure on her. And that the dog went too far in the heat of battle, so to speak. You could say that the dog "ate" her before he killed her.

That's scary. Hopefully, we'll get a follow up explaining what caused the dogs to turn on her. It's very curious as, in my experience, Great Danes have been some of the gentlest dogs I've seen.
