Anyone know why he left The Virginian before the series ended?

As I remember, it was his health, but I could be wrong on that. Could be his contract was up and he just didn't want to continue.

After a time Cobb felt constrained by the role and wanted to do other things.

I just purchased the first season of The Virginian on dvd and in all of the interviews (James Drury, Gary Clarke, Roberta Shore) they have only fond memories and kind things to say about Lee J. Cobb.
