What was it about Drive My Car and Licorice Pizza that you felt wowed you? I haven't seen either.

In terms of direction, West Side Story I thought was stunning and Spielberg proved yet again he is a master blaster film-maker. In the good ole' days, a film like this would have won. Well it did 60yrs ago and perhaps that was to its detriment.

Re: Which 2021 movie deserved to win Best Picture?

I saw Drive My Car last September and haven't been able to shake it since. A truly mesmerising experience, it suffers one or two bumps in the last half hour or so but three hours sailed by. Not for everyone but I found it to be one of the better new movies I've seen in the last couple of years.

Licorice Pizza is just so vivacious and full or life, warm and funny and a beautiful love letter to the '70s. One of Anderson's very best.

I thought WSS was terrific when the bland leads were offscreen but crashed to a halt whenever Tony and Maria took centre stage. Strong work by the rest of the cast, especially Mike Faist. For me it can't touch the earlier version, though.

Re: Which 2021 movie deserved to win Best Picture?

I will check them out when they come to Netflix or dvd. I like to have recommendations from posters I trust and who are intelligently discerning with their opinions.

Tony and Maria were sort of bland too in Wise's original and I did think that the young youthful looks of both Zegler and Elgort made for a nice R&J comparison. Of course Zegler is no Natalie Wood and the original shined in the support cast as well.

I loved Spielberg's visual representation of the material, all the actors sang their own parts this time around and it was grittier with more believable emotional impact. Spielberg made a few minor missteps to my own mind, but they are really negligible in the overall end product.

Re: Which 2021 movie deserved to win Best Picture?

I only saw Dune. And it was very disappointing.

I'll go with Licorice Pizza. I like pizza.

Re: Which 2021 movie deserved to win Best Picture?

I think you’ll be disappointed in this too. Pizza plays a very small role.

CODA!

CODA, hands down, end of sentence, Period!

It was a heartfelt movie about love and family, unlike the Superhero Movies and
CGI shit which the Hollyweird morons normally churn out.

😺 Schrodinger's Cat walks into a bar, and doesn't. 🤨 Let's go, Brandon! 🤨 Try that in a small town.

Re: Which 2021 movie deserved to win Best Picture?

Belfast and West Side Story looked pretty with nothing much to say and no particularly interesting way of (not) saying it

As with much of Spielberg, what he has to say he presents it visually. WSS was also good old fashioned, old school film-making. I don't think Branagh is that great a director. I find there is a bit of flatness to his films. He was better with his Shakespeare efforts as that was his real passion.

CODA doesn't sound too original and something that t.v. movie hasn't done before, but I am still keen to see it. The essence will be found in its delivery.

Re: Which 2021 movie deserved to win Best Picture?

It's hard to say unless seeing them all and even the voters don't watch all the nominees, yet still place a vote.

Best is all subjective too. Most Oscar winning choices get regulated into the dustbin of "who cares wins" and the real classics and stayers are awarded by time.

Re: Which 2021 movie DESERVED to win BEST picture?!?…
