William Powell : Don't Know Whether to Admire the Actor or the Man More

Don't Know Whether to Admire the Actor or the Man More

Besides all the fabulous entertainment he gave us, I am so impressed with the man himself. He lost two women he loved (Carole Lombard-they were divorced but still very close) and Jean Harlow, his son committed suicide, and he himself had to undergo treatment for cancer. He married someone he had only known three weeks yet stayed the course with her for 44 years. How much character would such a man have to possess to go through all that while maintaining a superb acting career and remain such a gentleman? Another poster said she wanted a man like William Powell. Me too!

One of my favorite actors for many of those same reasons.

I love Mr. Powell the actor and always look forward to seeing him in a movie. He always adds class and sophistication into every performance and elevates the entire movie.

And he was truly a class act in real life. Despite the tragedies in his life, this fine gentleman made it to the ripe old age of 91.

So I might admire the man slightly more.

PS: don't forget, Carole Lombard died in 1942. She and Mr. Powell were close friends even after their divorce, so this must have been a terrible loss to him, especially after losing Jean Harlow just four years before.

He was wonderful in films and by all accounts a fine person as well. I never tire of seeing his movies.
