Is it worth getting solar panels in england?

I've been wondering this for some time now and I think now is the time as any to get some installed but with the shitty weather we have over here would it even be worth it?

My plan is to spend a few grand and eventually sell it back to my energy supplier and gain my money back over the course of x amount of years and also consume it too, but like I say is there even any point?

Don't think me house is facing the right way either which is even more of a ballache.

👍

Depends on where you live:

Compare that to the United States (without Alaska) where it looks like almost everywhere is better than the best spots in the UK:

Meh. It's pointless unless there's a lot of them then.. I'm now more concerned about why I've spent 35 years thinking brighton was near blackpool.

Re: Is it worth getting solar panels in england?

do you make a profit after the upfront cost and any additional costs spread out over the year(s)? unless the solar savings offset the cost this isnt a good idea, because the money used to fund the solar panal installation and the distribution/control equipment could be invested and provide a real income stream.

if the house sits disadvantage with regard to maximum sunlight then that too is a disincentive.

Prices have come down a lot, so areas that were uneconomical ten years ago could be feasible today.
You could set up a small scale system to power a garden shed or as emergency back-up or? Equip it with a charge controller that records the daily output, locate the panel in the best available location and orientation and collect data for a year or two. That'll give you real world numbers for your location.
I'd think twice about mounting panels on the roof of a house unless there's no other option. There's the difficulty and expense of mounting them without damaging the roof, running power cables through the house, and access for regular cleaning and inspection can be scary or costly if you have to hire someone. Maybe along a fence line or put up a car port or shelter with a roof at the ideal angle and orientation.
