Dunkirk : Rank the Oscar Nominees for Best Picture that year
Re: Rank the Oscar Nominees for Best Picture that year
Three Billboards is a cut above all the others.

😺 Schrodinger's Cat walks into a bar, and doesn't. 😠 Let's go, Brandon! 🙂 I like cashews!
Re: Rank the Oscar Nominees for Best Picture that year
I thought if it didn't attempt any humor it would have been better. It didn't fit the subject matter.
Re: Rank the Oscar Nominees for Best Picture that year
I think it fitted it well. In real life there are always funny moments in among the misery, and vice versa.
Re: Rank the Oscar Nominees for Best Picture that year
I liked that The Shape Of Water won best picture. It was visually strong and an expertly presented homage to horror creature feature films from the past with an interesting love story angle. It gave the Academy a bit of credibility in my eyes for being more daring than usual for a genre it regularly dismisses. Last time was in 1991 for TSOTL.
THE SHAPE OF WATER
THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI - (smart morality tale)
THE POST - (classy and tense press drama in the vein of ATPM)
CALL ME BY YOUR NAME - (careful, arty and languished)
DARKEST HOUR - (well acted, but overtly stylized and too championing)
GET OUT - (average black comedy horror movie, yet a token nod only due to its race theme)
DUNKIRK - (Nolan experimental and not invested in the forced emotional impact)
LADY BIRD - (a nothing and over-praised film and another token female film maker nod)
Haven't seen Phantom Thread.
Norman! What did you put in my tea?

The Shape of Water wasn't even watchable.
Del Toro is one of my favourite directors, but he's produced garbage since Pan's Labyrinth.
I haven't seen Nightmare Alley yet so can't comment on that.
Well, this is a tomb. I'll make them feel at home

What did you find unwatchable about it?
I watched Darkest Hour for the first time the other day. I liked Oldman's and Mendelsohn' performances, but I found the film too stylized in presentation and ra ra Winston. No offense Sir!
The film championed a war-monger and after the Dunkirk evacuate, the war raged for another 5yrs and many of those men would have ended up back in battle and perishing.

I wasn’t a fan of The Shape of Water but I did like a few things about it - the score and Richard Jenkins’ performance especially - which kept me watching. I wouldn’t watch it again though, and I didn’t think it was remotely Oscar-worthy.
