Only one was really a big surprise: Kamila Valiyeva, the 15yo Russian perfectionist phenom.
What I enjoy is all the butchering of Russian names by the announcers since I was a Russian linguist during the Cold War. The winner: ¡ANASTASIA! I've heard many variations, but have yet to hear it pronounced in correct Russian. No excuse, announcers, all the sounds are common in English.

…they should study a tape of the athletes pronouncing their own names. There's no excuse when a name has only sounds common to English, e.g. Anastasia.
I heard a Brit pronounce Tess LeDeux's name much better than the American announcers who tend to pronounce LeDeux and LeDoux the same. The Brits often use the first sound but most Americans don't. OTOH, Brits are more likely to mispronounce Spanish words. I cringe when I hear "Ni-ca-RA-gyu-a instead of Ni-ca-RA-gwa."

I hold a record in skating. I was the only person ever to take off my skates and try to stab someone with it.

Put a pencil in the hole, spin it and them put the skate into the grooves.
To hear it you take your headphones and duct tape the metal tip onto the blade.

Yeah, though I should mention that the only way it works is if the skate is worn and they have to skate in a perfect circle at 33 1/3 RPM.
I cannot tell ya how many times it makes The Sex Pistols sound like either the Chipmunks one moment than the slowest band in the world the next.

I don't see how their bodies can hold up while they're learning. You can really mess up your back by taking a spill on a hard surface
