Re: Any tips on how to learn German?

Thanks, I like using different programs at once and so probably will do this.

I especially like the first link. I started another one that had these official levels of proficiencies set, which lets you into the country, I think, if you're getting a job in German there, I guess. I know a lot of the jobs in English require degrees, it seems.

Re: Any tips on how to learn German?

Watch german language films with no subtitles, but knowing you. This is just a poor pity thread, why don't you make friends with your room mate you were excited about. Or have you already drawn up half the room with her, which of you gets the door and who gets the window?

Re: Any tips on how to learn German?

Use the Duolingo app. If yiu can't hack that, you can't hack German. Punkt slut.

Re: Any tips on how to learn German?

Yea, that one's really good, and I've used it until it required payment, which I've done before.

I just took the test, and I think it thinks I'm level 2, but a lot of it I pieced together etc.

I've just been down to my last penny. I hope to get a job soon or at least if I move to another group home, though that may be January, or later.

I started my 14 day free trial, though.

Re: Any tips on how to learn German?

It doesn't require payment, you don't even need the free trial. For free users, you have to claim the gem chests, and you just have to practice every day and even free users get somewhere. There are WAY more than 2 levels. It's so berthing you keep at and they go on about repetition, but that's how kids learn so they're not far off. You can research books that supplement it, but it IS free. If course paying users get more stuff to do but free users get a lot. Much better than what you're getting right now, which is sweet fuck all.

Re: Any tips on how to learn German?

If I get a job, I'll probably keep the subscription for $12.99/month. (If you pay a year off at once, it's a cheaper total per year.)

It's my favorite and maybe most helpful learning method, so far.

Re: Any tips on how to learn German?

I'm telling you you don't need the subscription at all. You can learn without. It just means some ads. Who cares. Kill the sound and pour some coffee.

If it's your favourite use it. Seriously. Every day within 2 weeks you will be constructing some complicated sentences. Yes, lots of repetition, but if you think about it, that's how kids learn. You can get books that explain the why's of a language but apps like duolingo really help get things in motion.

So if you're more than just talk, use it, keep at it. Every day. No breaks.

Re: Any tips on how to learn German?

Sounds good! I have some good base knowledge, already. There were options to do it 5-20 minutes a day. I chose 20. I did little workouts throughout the day, too, and practiced violin twice but got tired, as I've been lethargic lately and share a room now, unexpectedly in the group home, need to move out or maybe get an apartment with money from my dad.

Re: Any tips on how to learn German?

Violin has nothing to do with learning German. Forget that. The carrot is knowing German, yes? Chase that carrot.

Whether your initial goal is writing and understanding over speaking (since that's hard unless you have someone to practice with, other than repeating lessons out loud…But there are forums and other communication forms for that, if you're really serious about learning German), learning apps is the way to go.

I know what it's like to fall in love with a language and if that love is real and you feel like you're having a "teach a man to fish" moment then these apps are a godsend. You seriously do not have to buy anything. You gain what others pay for through hard work and a LOT of repetition but after that you can lay down some BARS in whatever language you've connected with within 2 weeks.

If in that time, you're still lost, probably not the language for you.

But you don't reap any benefits in any language without putting in TIME. And attention.

Dem's de facts.

Re: Any tips on how to learn German?

Good idea, another poster gave me the helpful links with things like that.

I don't know other languages much, but I was pretty good at accents/speaking, like of other languages or of English, not like speaking English with a Russian accent.

Re: Any tips on how to learn German?

Level 2 of what, btw? Each section has levels. Do you mean level 2 of the very first thing?

Show me how much you really love German. Level 2 in which category after all this time of talking about German…via a free app that you decided to "free test"/pay for (unnecessary)

Re: Any tips on how to learn German?

You shouldn't give up. Looks like you quit after 3 lessons or something. Don't tell me you're paying for premium…😑

I did it a lot today on the bus.

Re: Any tips on how to learn German?

Good. Do something every day. Not just once a week or month. It's free. Just requires time and a bit of patience.

As you may have noticed, parts of the lessons include flashcards so you don't have to make them.

Re: Any tips on how to learn German?

Yea, but I've drilled the words milk, tea, and wine like 100+ times, going through Duolingo more than once or twice.

Re: Any tips on how to learn German?

Yes. That's how it sticks in. Trust me, you'll ve thankful for that later. It's how you learned to speak English. Your parents repeated simple things to you a LOT.

Once you pass checkpoint 1, it will start ramping up. Even a few completed segments from now you will be able to construct conversional sentences.

If you can't handle this, learning another language might not be for you. Especially not one with complicated grammar.

Re: Any tips on how to learn German?

My schools required us to take Spanish in 3rd and 6th grade. In 10th grade, I got the highest grade in Spanish I in a school of 200 per class year or 800 total in the school.

Re: Any tips on how to learn German?

Spanish is easier than German, though (imo) and there are enough people to practise with in the USA. If you're only looking to write and read German, sure, online forums and social media can help, but for speaking you'd probably do well to find some sort of German community once you have the basics down. Or find a Skype/Messenger buddy that you can chat with.

In the meantime stick with duolingo. Yes, it is repetitive but that helps in the long run. It isn't going to take a month to be fluent. The beginning part is the most repetitive but soon enough you'll get past it. If you do more than 15min every day, say, 2 hours, you will get past the first checkpoint within 2 weeks. And then it moves a little faster than you expect.

They make it fun by creating silly sentences to construct too. Different for every language course, so stick it out.

Re: Any tips on how to learn German?

Sounds good! I should be able to practice more, but yea sometimes out I may do it for 1/2 hour? I was a bit tired today, woke up early, took a shower, went to a job interview, underdressed in a first snow day, etc.

Yea, I'm looking forward to seeing the forums.

I heard German is hard, too. I tried a little Finnish, and it seemed like the words were mostly more complex. I don't know about English being like that.

Watch all of Hitler's speeches that you can.
Repeat them word for word when you get to Germany.
You will be their leader in no time.

Re: Any tips on how to learn German?

We should have all been taught multiple conversational languages in schools:

1. German
2. Scandinavian
3. English With an English Accent
4. Asian

Re: Any tips on how to learn German?

Right now for me, I think Swedish. I probably don't know enough to knowingly dive in, same for most any culture.

Swedish or Japanese? as another language possibly… My mom wanted to learn Chinese/Mandarin. I think she was most into India, too, and did tai chi at an Asian/Chinese place, in Orlando, Florida. She did yoga at a house, and maybe it was just the couple in charge that were from India.

What I'm used to in the US…

plain, thick ham or turkey sandwiches on white bread

I don't like it all as my personal top choice, though, by far. (I'm hungrier now than I was as a kid.)

Re: Any tips on how to learn German?

As far as the Scandinavian languages are concerned, Swedish is the most user friendly but what the fuuuuuuck, you're posting cartoons depictions of Sweden and non traditional food. Wtf?

Re: Any tips on how to learn German?

Well, it made me think how I joined a Facebook group on Swedish recipes. Sometimes, they pop up in my Newsfeed.

Re: Any tips on how to learn German?

For your diabetes, the steak, or stir fry chicken is the best hands down. Seriously Christina, you have to stop this fantasy of going moving to Germany thinking that you will play in a orchestra. What you need to do is get your blood sugar controlled, cut your breads and sugers and junk food way down exercise, get a part time job. That does not mean you can't learn German and go on holidays to Europe in the future. But I'm not going to lie, there is no future unless you get your diabetes under control now.

Re: Any tips on how to learn German?

There are none. There is only very hard work.

My advice is to not even try, because it's hard as hell to learn (I know because I took two years of it in college), and you'll never need it, because you're never going to move to Germany.

Verbs and vocabulary are generally regarded as the most essential when a person wants to learn a new language.

Just curious. Why German?

Re: Any tips on how to learn German?

I wanted to move there and do music since I started college.

I had a German foreign exchange student after a friend far away I visited more than once did. I have German in-laws from my aunt. I had a teacher in college, group singing, who sang in Germany.
