The Goldbergs : Chad Kremp as Adam's Movie Making Partner?

Chad Kremp as Adam's Movie Making Partner?

I didn't watch the series from the start, but I've probably watched a good 2 1/2 season's worth. Maybe I just missed it, but... The intro to tonight's episode (Agassi) has Adam saying that in the 80s, he and his "best friend" Chad Kremp were so into making movies they even had their own company. Of Adam's friends, I didn't even recognize the name. Let alone, all the episodes Adam has been involved in some sort of filmmaking, I don't ever remember Chad Kremp involved. He's only even appeared in 11 out of almost 90 episodes. Am I missing something, not familiar with an older story line, or did they just pull this out of their a$$es???

Re: Chad Kremp as Adam's Movie Making Partner?

I was a bit confused as well. I too didn't watch from the very beginning. Apparently they did have an ep with the whole Kremp family in the 8th ep. I always thought the tomboy girl was his best friend, but she disappears for long periods of time as well. Maybe I haven't paid attention much, but has Chad been a part of his little circle in the past? I guess so. I just remember Dave Kim and the girl who I can't remember the name of.

Re: Chad Kremp as Adam's Movie Making Partner?

We probably came in about the same time. For me it was around the time his first girlfriend (Dana?) had moved away, and the friendship with Emmy (?) was kind of pushed as his "best friend". But she's been pretty much in the background for a while now too. And, yeah, while I wouldn't have necessarily thought Adam might tag him as his "best" friend, Dave Kim is definitely the most showcased of Adam's friends. On an odd side note, if you think about it, and look at number of appearances, Barry and Erica's friends are much more featured than Adam's friends. Which may be a story point in itself.

Re: Chad Kremp as Adam's Movie Making Partner?

Well I probably came in way before you if you got here when Dana moved away. Dana was around when I started watching. She doesn't move until the 3rd season. I just don't remember this Chad guy from his other appearances and yet I do recall all of Dave Kim's appearances.

Re: Chad Kremp as Adam's Movie Making Partner?

I don't remember seeing Chad prior to this episode.

Re: Chad Kremp as Adam's Movie Making Partner?

I've watched the show from the beginning but just once (when broadcast) - I hope to see the pilot again some day to verify what year the narrator says it is! But I've been aware of Chad and how they both videotaped a lot. I read somewhere that when they were putting the show together, Adam had his collection of tapes and he got some more from Chad. It wasn't until this episode that I heard about their company, but I don't suppose it was incorporated!

Also I don't know how much of what I know about the Kremp family is from the show and how much is from interviews and such, especially this site:

http://www.historyvshollywood.com/reelfaces/the-goldbergs/

I know that when Chad's father appeared in tonight's show, I knew right away that it was the real Chad! The video clips at the end confused me so I checked the cast list and I was right! I think there are recent pictures of him in the history website, or maybe somewhere else I saw a picture of real Adam and Chad with the young actors.

I will say that the actor who plays Chad has really grown since I last remember seeing him on the show - I guess so has Sean Giambrone, but I see him in every episode!

Edit: I hadn't looked at that website since I first learned about it (here) and I think it's probably the only thing I've seen except for reading some of Adam's comments at AVClub. (I just now googled "hollywood vs reality the goldbergs" and it was the first result.) The website says this:

"At the beginning of nearly every episode of The Goldbergs, the TV show's narrator (Patton Oswalt) reminds us that the current episode takes place in "1980-something." "

So nearly every episode!

Adam says he thought changing Eric into Erica would make for more stories. The excerpt doesn't mention ABC asking for it, which is what it says in the IMDB trivia or FAQ.

The stuff I remembered about Chad is in an article by him that the website links to. I think it is a page of his family's florist business website. He mentions their company as a pipedream that came true for Adam. The picture of the two of them and the actors is there along with other pictures from the set - I didn't know or remember that the real Chad played a deli guy in the episode about his family.

Re: Chad Kremp as Adam's Movie Making Partner?

Thanks for all the background. :) I'll definitely check out that site. The Goldbergs probably isn't in the top 10 of my current viewing list - which isn't a bad thing, my viewing list is way too long 😨 - but one of it's attractions (and sometimes flaws) is it's connection to the real life of someone who grew up 5-10 years behind my own timeline.

Anyway, thanks for the background on Chad, especially on the real-life side. Some other thoughts raised by your comments... :)

It wasn't until this episode that I heard about their company, but I don't suppose it was incorporated!

You're most likely right. Yet, I love that little geeky touch. I can imagine, at that age, tagging "Incorporated" on a "company" name, believing with all my heart that it meant something. lol

I know that when Chad's father appeared in tonight's show, I knew right away that it was the real Chad!

I totally missed that. I saw the shot of Chad, grown up, in the closing sequence. I'll have to check it out streaming.

I will say that the actor who plays Chad has really grown since I last remember seeing him on the show - I guess so has Sean Giambrone, but I see him in every episode!

It's funny you mention that. I, seriously, in the scenes on the tennis court, out of the blue thought: Adam (Sean Giambrone) suddenly doesn't look so much like a wiry, scrawny pre-pubescent kid! Not that I say any of those things derisively, it was just that he suddenly looked much more matured, physically, than he was (intentionally, obviously) up until now. It was probably the tight tennis shorts. 😄

"At the beginning of nearly every episode of The Goldbergs, the TV show's narrator (Patton Oswalt) reminds us that the current episode takes place in "1980-something." "

So nearly every episode!

lol - I have yet to notice an episode that didn't start that way. :) There must be one somewhere in the past they missed it. But... that would be my one peeve about this show: it's so tied to cultural "memes" (though nobody would have called them that then) of the times, yet they jump around so freely within an entire decade. I mean, I can slide with mixing things that are a year, two, three off. But they jump between the early 80s and the late 80s and everything in between with such carelessness that anyone who lived through it (the target audience?) has to feel like, wait... what...? This week's episode wasn't the worst, but, mixing Andre Agasi, Steven Segal and mullets - VERY late 80s references, with "Disco is dead" - a VERY early 80s reference.... just felt jarring to me. (Very lower case "j" ... lol)

Anyway, too much off topic rambling. :) Thanks again for the background info.

Re: Chad Kremp as Adam's Movie Making Partner?

Actually, as someone that's watched the show since the beginning, this episode highlighted one of my biggest problems with the series. Way back in season 1 they made it out so that Chad was his best friend then after that episode, he made like one appearance in season 2 and then that was it from Chad. He just disappeared. It made no sense to me. I'm glad he's back though.

Re: Chad Kremp as Adam's Movie Making Partner?

I wonder if Chad went to the same school? It (the school) isn't mentioned in the history website. Maybe if he didn't go to that school they left him out of a lot of episodes.

Re: Chad Kremp as Adam's Movie Making Partner?

He was shown in school with them in earlier episodes. The reason why I believe they left him out is because in terms of comedy, there wasn't much there they could do with the character; not like Dave Kim. This is the problem I've had with the series. I can remember back to the spring of 2013 when I read the logline and they said that it would be like The Wonder Years set in the 80s so I was amped for something like that which would have made the show more grounded. What I got was something more like Everybody Hates Chris, which is not bad, but not what I was expecting. The tone of the show is played more for laughs and is more exaggerated than it really should be. This left them with utilizing more of Dave Kim and less of Chad.

Re: Chad Kremp as Adam's Movie Making Partner?

Apparently he has appeared in a few eps. I just don't remember him. Well I didn't see the one where he was first introduced. I do recall the character Adam saying that the girl was his best friend. Or maybe my memory is hazy.

Re: Chad Kremp as Adam's Movie Making Partner?

I do recall the character Adam saying that the girl was his best friend.

I do too. They went on that game show together. They had a falling out and getting back together. I guess in this latest episode they did that with Chad.

I read the history website and Chad's article again because I thought they mentioned the girl (Emmy) but it was Adam's girlfriend Dana (the article refers to her as Adam's crush). Then I searched the series cast list for "kremp" and found some interesting things (this is a long list!):

Jennifer Irwin ...
 Virginia Kremp (11 episodes, 2013-2016)
(Chad's Mom)

Jacob Hopkins ...
 Chad Kremp (11 episodes, 2013-2017)
(btw:
Stephanie Katherine Grant ...
 Emmy Mirsky (16 episodes, 2014-2017)
Natalie Alyn Lind ...
 Dana Caldwell (21 episodes, 2013-2016)
more later)

Tyler Stokes ...
 Drew Kremp (3 episodes, 2013-2015)
(Chad's brother)

Austin Filson ...
 Scott Kremp (1 episode, 2015)
(Chad's brother)

Connor Weil ...
 Steve Kremp (1 episode, 2015)
(Chad's brother)
(Chad's article says:
"The show has featured my parents, Charles and Gina along with my brother Drew and I. My 2 older brothers, Steve and Scott have yet to make the show."
I guess it needs updating.)

Chad Kremp ...
 Mr. Kremp (1 episode, 2017)
(Chad isn't credited in the list for the early episode about his family, when he had a cameo as a deli employee. Notice how they cast new young Adam and Chad for this episode:
Solomon Stewart ...
 Young Adam (1 episode, 2017)
Ethan Jones ...
 Young Chad (1 episode, 2017) )
Edit: I checked to make sure they were in this episode and the full cast list for the episode shows them and an additional young Adam:
Brayden Titus ...
Young Adam
Edit: over the years there were two other "Adam at" other ages and one "mistaken for Adam" and also one "new" Dana in 2016 - because she was busy on Gotham?

Tom Cavanagh ...
 Charles Kremp (1 episode, 2013)
(Chad's Dad)

Thanks - Dedications are on the same page:

Chad Kremp ... dedicated to: my best friend (1 episode, 2013)

Drew Kremp ... dedicated to: Heartbreaker (1 episode, 2014)
(he must have been the brother who Erica dated)

Emmy Mirsky ... dedicated to (1 episode, 2014)

The only people with dedications in more than one episode:

Barry Goldberg ... dedicated to / dedicated to: The Doctor Barry Goldberg / dedicated to: The Doctor Barry Goldberg, M.D. / dedicated to: my brother who taught me kara-te (4 episodes, 2013-2017)

Re: Chad Kremp as Adam's Movie Making Partner?

Thanks! That bit of background (plus other details from lmcsjb) at least helps establish it wasn't something totally out of the blue. In real world terms, I can imagine maybe the real life Chad, after seeing where the show was going to go in terms of tracking Adam's childhood, maybe asking, hey, can you keep me in the background? Just idle speculation. But it's at least good to know this wasn't totally fabricated into the story line. But, yeah, at the same time, it's a major hiccup - hell, a long, smelly, wet burp - in the continuity of the story line between then and "now". :)

Re: Chad Kremp as Adam's Movie Making Partner?

If you go to Chad Kremp's article (there's a link to it in the history website) - which is a page of the Kremp family florist business website - you can get a 50% discount on three different bouquets (modeled by TV Beverly) if you're a Goldbergs fan! Plus he talks about how close friends they are, even though the Goldbergs were so different from his family. So I don't think he's shy about it.

I was thinking maybe Chad and Adam were closer when they were younger than they are in the show. That could be why he was in the earlier episodes more, when they were in middle school. (The only timeline is the younger characters growing up!) The pictures Chad has in his article are from when they were younger than high school, I would guess. Also their friendship revolved around toys a lot.

Now that I've looked at those websites again and more closely, I think they made this episode to fill in some of the story about the Kremps. Chad says in his article that movies were a hobby for him but a career for Adam - it's like an outline for the Chad and Adam part of the episode.

Edit: I double posted again! I guess IMDB is bogged down with people archiving stuff, as instructed. Plus they said the message boards software is not up to date - I keep getting the page that says "D'oh!" and twice it has resulted in my post happening twice. I'm not archiving, but I did look at my first post, which is still there in a little used board (I won't name it, but I told the story of my first post in another board with little activity - Our Miss Brooks, the TV show) but I double posted my very first post, and it and the deleted double are still there. I had to learn not to use the back arrow at certain times, which can cause double posting in the best of times. Today it's just happening willy-nilly!

Re: Chad Kremp as Adam's Movie Making Partner?

lol - I got the "D'oh!" page a couple times on this thread. I'm not a super avid member of the message boards, but I've definitely enjoyed being able to interact with knowledgeable people like yourself. I'm sad to see they have to shut the message boards down. :(

(The only thing I really hate about the message boards, aside from the occasional ass-hat flamers, is the emoticons. lol)

Anyway, I delved into the HistorysHollywood site a bit, and will definitely keep them in mind the next time I need to send flowers. :D I'll be sad to see the boards go away for the fact that it allowed people like me (mild but curious and interested fans) to connect with people like you (knowledgeable fans). If we don't connect again outside these boards, wish you the best. :)

Re: Chad Kremp as Adam's Movie Making Partner?

I watched the show all the time and I don't even remember Chad. Dave Kim and the other couple of guys are on the show than he is. it wasn't the strongest Writing in the world in an otherwise funny episode.

Re: Chad Kremp as Adam's Movie Making Partner?

Me neither, but Chad has appeared before. They just haven't really mentioned how close he and Adam are. The real Adam is probably too close to the material to realize that Chad has been underutilized. But then again, as another poster pointed out: what can you really do with him? Dave Kim is funnier. So are the JTP.

I thought this past week's episode was very sweet - dedicated to the real Chad, who appeared as Chad's father.

Re: Chad Kremp as Adam's Movie Making Partner?

I thought it was a good episode too, but that aspect of it was very poorly handled.
